Watercolors were based but you can understand why Sugi changed to more plain styles when you remember that his key art was being used as assets for everything worldwide, and needed to be easy to make out in all kinds of sizes and printing scenarios
Even as early as the TCG's Gym 1 set in 1998, Sugimori had new compositions coming out that used other techniques, digital ink and pencils similar to what you'd see in Gen 3 and 4.
However they kept the watercolor aesthetics in Gen 2 game art likely for consistency, which I like because especially for the Pokemon, it gives the impression of a sketch artist filling out his zukan by hand.

It's weird the younger generation forgets that pokemon was originally an RPG.

It’d be really cool if they brought back this style for a generation. The want is obviously there from general audiences since everyone spazzes out over “fat pikachu”.
Don’t have my hopes up though, each generation since ruby/sapphire seems to get lazier and lazier

what's the best place to browse through scans of old gen 1 - 2 sugimori art from the ganes / TCG? I know you can find some stuff on Bulbapedia but I'm talking more like promo art, not individual species artwork
I'm putting PokeMMO on my portable and I want nice boxart but all the fan boxart from launchbox sucks ass so i want to make my own

I miss the old proportions where Pokemon look like plastic figures from a Gachapon; if anyone has had a collection of Gundam minifigures, they know what I mean.

This place is total cancer. What's the point of an image board if nobody posts any fucking images?

I find that Meowth/Jigglypuff/Hitmontop thing thoroughly fascinating for both how utterly bizarre it is compared to what'd you'd normally see in Pokemon, and how it's never been seen again any fashion.
Even that turtle looks like it got reworked into Carracosta.
I mean, I guess this could be a proto-Hitmontop, but man.
It's so fuckin' weird.

definitely. but later on when some friends and I got back into battling the cards around 09-'12 we just used little dice or sometimes even the 20 sided magic ones. 4 dots on the die would be 40 damage.
since some of the newer cards would have close to 200 HP the MTG 20 sided ones worked pretty good.

in some schools most kids are too nice to even think of taking anyone else's stuff
pretty crazy when you see how things are elsewhere

I dont remember ever really using the glass bead counters. in elementary school we really didnt battle pokemon cards we just collected them usually.
it wasn't until a revival later on in the late 00's early 10's I ever really battled them. me and one of my buddies even went to a heart gold soul silver pre-release (there were like 4 TCG sets around the time of the DS games) and got some sick Celebi sleeves. it was a booster draft you paid your entry and got like 6 new boosters to build a deck from.
but we were like 20 or 21 maybe which was kinda weird, it was usually young kids and their parents but the parents (later 30s to 40s) sometimes battled too.

I am personally indifferent but one thing I do prefer from that era are the designs of the protagonists. I like how Red and Gold (Ethan?) have that "cocky brat" look to them. The modern iterations look kinda faggy.

I just miss when they looked like kids you could actually imagine roughing it and being into outdoorsman activities, since that's part of the whole journey.
The S/V kids look like they would run home to mommy after getting a scraped knee.

>the old proportions where Pokemon look like plastic figures from a Gachapon
It's because the old mons were designed directly as sprites and their proportions had to fit in the 56x56px square box. That's why the RG art had that stocky limbs look. It wasn't until the anime (or the RB art) when they elongated them into the proportions we see today.

probably both, they're definitely gay but the fedora + smiling vacantly in every cutscene while everyone else talks makes them seem really autistic too.
>>58985185
you think they look like adults? I guess it's subjective. but I'm pretty sure there's a scene near the end where Z says "you kids" or something like that.
