if I was gonna do a challenge like this I would play PlatinumQoL which adds Murkrow and Misdreavus in. might not be entirely authentic, but if the point is to use cross-gen evolutions, then more options is a good thing.

Self imposed challenges are fun. I've had a few ideas myself like
-only pokemon of a certain color
-only pokemon of a specific real world species (fox, dog, pig, horse,etc)
-only pokemon with more than one head
-only pokemon without limbs
-only pokemon based on inanimate objects
-only pokemon of a certain weight or height

And so forth. There's lots of creative restrictions you can do to make a run special.
