I think they're cute enough but not better than Flo and Juli, the boy in particular is a big downgrade from Flo imo. Their designs will probably benefit from customisation and going hat-less. The Champions characters instead are a complete miss for me, except for the woman with the huge hair and the asymmetrical outfit... she's so Geeta-like I can't help but like her design lol.

I get what they were going for, but as you said it's barely touched upon. It feels more like the narrative telling Kieran, he isn't allowed to be anything other than a doormat to make the mc look better, ironically justifying his freak out.
I've mentioned it more than a few times here, but one of my changes for ID was to have Kieran successfully catch Terapagos then when everything's all settled, give the it to the MC since he only wanted it to prove something that didn't need to be proved and Terapagos seems to like mc.

I agree that it feels like the narrative is using Kiki to prop the player up, but in the end he does "rise above" it (I don't think it was done as well as it should have, but it is shown that he still has a lot of fire in himself without feeling like he has to be competitive with (You) all the time). The "there's always someone better" thing is extremely humbling and Kiki learns about it in pretty much the worst ways possible... but it's unfortunately also true.
