I'm considering buying a Pokemon Diamond cartridge now that I've stumbled upon my old DS. I'm well aware that it's far inferior to Platinum, but it was my first Pokemon game and I'm heavily nostalgic towards it.

Yea I tend to prefer Diamond over platinum for the same reason. The effect of nostalgia is substantial, like I personally think RSE are the better games over DPPt in terms of actual quality game design, but I've played through Diamond more times than any other game just because I'll always associate that particular experience as THE "Pokemon game experience"

I have no clue. When the cartridge got chipped, it flat out wouldn't read on my 3DS, I had to reshell it (never do this) just to get it to work, and I never bothered to do that.
For the record, it still shows up as HeartGold on my home menu, and I even managed to dump it, though I have no clue how good it'll work on emulators.

After one playthrough with each of them and on my second one with the monke, I appreciate how usable all three of these starters are.
In other gens there's always one starter that either gets no moves or just sucks ass for no reason, but all three of these guys are quality team anchors.

Infernape is obviously just really strong but they all get crazy stab
Empoleon’s typing is so good defensively, not super important in game but still, and gets STAB surf which is always nice
And torterra while slow does at least get earthquake via level up which is wild
