SwSh suck but they're a step up over what came later.
Graphics arent great but they're passable in most contexts, not distractingly bad. I had fun just playing bike simulator and team building.
Then SV came out, had actually distractingly ugly visuals, breeding was so bad it was essentially removed, and raids, the only endgame system that exists without breeding, were utterly broken, straight up didn't work at all and felt like a buggy nightmare.
Not surprising even I have some nostalgia for SwSh.

imo this is all they need to be. i sincerely do not give a fuck about pokemon looking like the most hi-def AAA UE5 masterpiece, so long as its not actively ugly (like PLA and SV were). id rather the graphics just be passable and more time get devoted to making the game actually fun. if it looks great, thats a nice bonus, but shiny graphics cant save a mid game. ww looks nice, but if it has the same problem sv did of an empty as fuck map, all the graphics in the world wont make me like it

i remember randomly, like a year into playing swsh, i stumbled across a child NPC in hammerlocke(?) who asked me to take a letter to their friend in the glow mushroom town i forget the name of. I get there and the friend is an old man who said the writer of the letter died long ago. went back to hammerlocke and the child was gone, with a reaper cloth in her place.
swsh have their flaws but they have a lot that aligns with how things were in the older games. sv has next to nothing in terms of little quest lines like that, every item is either just sitting in a random field or just bought from a delibird presents

the beginning area of swsh wasn't bad honestly. the towns in general were pretty nice. i still really like motostoke. the games are still kind of awful to play and the graphics/animations at times are just inexcusable. it'll always be one of the worst gens, undoubtably, but it's not all negatives.

I mean anime style is the graphics pokemon should have, I always cringe when people claim it's bad and especially so the times Ive seen people unironically wish pokemon looked like TLOU or dark souls.
Like I love the way gen 10 is looking, very excited for it and all, I dont hate where they are going but if it were up to me I'd like them to focus on an improved anime aesthetic for the world. Unfortunately the very loud minority will get pandered to in the end when they should be ignored.

There's multiple series where this happens, its because newer entries literally keep getting worse, so obviously people end up defending older entries for being better than newer ones. There's no change of opinion or weird cultural shift happening its just like, thing gets worse, people prefer the less worse one.

Speak for yourself. I always defended cel shading and outlines, and thought the 3DS mods to remove them looked like shit. Pokemon is at its best when it’s trying to be like a cartoon or an anime, instead of the forced “muh realism” garbage SV forced with its terrible textures and muddy dirt shading.

Swsh always looked good on the routes and cities, it was the god awful "wild zone" that looked and ran like complete trash. I said for years that it was a bizarre compromise and Swsh would have been better off without it

SS does have some nice looking set pieces when viewed in screenshots
But they're all backgrounds at a fixed angle, in game you can't go there and if you can there's tons of pop in

When zoomed out and not in the wild area, SS did look really good. It mostly looked bad once you actually looked closely at a texture, or saw the open baren wild area. If you cant be real about what you didnt like about a game, you cant be trusted on that game.
