I wouldn't mind something like that in a better designed rom hack

4 badges into Unbound on Expert Mode, and I've been tracking the performance of the Pokemon I use, pic related. To be honest, expert mode isn't really that fun. I regret not just choosing to play in sandbox mode, since I don't normally play postgame in Pokemon games anyhow.
>>
Unboud is the most boring hackrom I ever played to be honest.
>>
>>59126272
I never finished it because the first gym required retarded grinding or something. Maybe I set it wrong, but asking me to make a team to defeat some smogonretards wet dream with like 6 patches of grass and a bunch of shitmons just killed all my motivation. I did like it, but I just couldn't be bothered as it wasn't fun.

Would be a 8.8/10 hack for me because its doubles focused and etrian forms are cool but the awful story and dialogue drops it to 7.8/10
Arround fourth stratum i stopped giving a shit about the plot and press turbo A button everytime plot happens, i get that devs tries to make odyssey basicly EO3 untold plotwise but goddamn just make it like trio protag vs enemy team races to the top while slowly finding scary things after first half
Registeel becomes a fucking monster and Fearow becomes a pretty good mon in this hack i love it
>>
>>59126533
Is that what registeel looks like? Damn.

I gave up playing it at the crystal forest bit, it became tedious to navigate all of a sudden. Start was great, but the story gets way too much by the end.

Picrel team i used
>>
>>59126504
Maybe it was bugged on earlier versions. I just used defog while inside the gym, it'll clear the fog before the fight even begins.
>>
>>59126546
You are near the end (last level cap is 75) but if you want to continue prepare for more story because eighth stratum is just as bad as etria/sixth stratum

I planned out like 17 mono-type teams I wanted to use in this hack, if I ever had the time, just too many good options and good designs imo.
Sadly, those runs are on hold until I find a few more codes for shininess and wild encounters. An anon posted a list of Move ID's here a while ago, which was awesome since the game lacks move relearning.
Post your team later too. Did you use the Hikaru code at the beginning?

>>59126114
Cool designs and spritework, nice job anon.

>To be honest, expert mode isn't really that fun. I regret not just choosing to play in sandbox mode, since I don't normally play postgame in Pokemon games anyhow.

I was telling you to just play with that NG+ save file anon, especially if they ever wrap up the story with the Cube Corp update (2 more weeks lol).
Expert is fun, but my first run on it was pretty brutal too (especially the league). Even with EV and IV stuff dialled up in later runs it still feels like I need to re-arrange my team for the battle gimmicks, I never even felt that way with Radical Red for instance (outside of Hardc*re mode).

If you want, someone made a save editor specifically for Unbound recently. I felt like it was kind of redundant, for me now anyways, but in your case it might be useful if you wanna tweak things.
https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonROMhacks/comments/1rumn6f/update_puse_a_pok%C3%A9mon_unbound_now_online_save/

Also, love the idea of tracking each Pokemon's performance so meticulously, never thought to do that before.

It's really good, the only thing that bothered me is that to get a HM you have to find its respective HM master, and they're very well hidden. For example, I found Mew and Manaphy before discovering the Waterfall master. I never found the Rock Smash master.

I got bored after the 2nd gym but the game is a pretty big nothingburger with a bunch of useless fluff features added that don't meaningfully do anything to the experience (so, the main things advertised) so the only real things to pick on are the game balance and encounter changes (which are less advertised) and it's pretty stupid.
>like 50% of the mons you encounter up until that point get a new move called Dust Claw (earlygame Ground move)
>my Doduo, NidoranF and Rattata all had this move as if Brock and Rock/Poison users weren't easy enough to beat
>everything gets a near-perfect coverageslop moveset by Lv.15, my NidoranF basically had everything it'd ever need
>Butterfree is Bug/Psychic for vapid romhacker reasons which sums up the type changes
>face Brock and realise they didn't even bother doing anything to make Bind good, they just gave up and made it a normal attack that also boosts Atk/Def
>Eevee on Route 1 sums up the encounter changes, basically making everything available asap
Just meh. No good decisions anywhere really.

Has working with decompilation gotten easier yet or do you still need a master's degree in programming to do anything?
I just got back into this and binary hacking seems so much more better than what it used to be.
>>
>>59129138
You never needed the master's degree in programming to do anything.
>>
>>59127211
>I was telling you to just play with that NG+ save file anon
Yeah, maybe I probably should've. It's really stupid now that I think about it, I never really play postgame in romhacks, only in regular mainline titles. So Sandbox locking out of postgame shouldn't have been an issue for me. I do think Sandbox+Postgame should be unlocked with first clear on Difficult or higher difficulty. But something something devs want you to play the game how they want you to. Which I think is awful design in games, but doubly so for Pokemon.

>someone made a save editor specifically for Unbound
Oh that's actually really neat. I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to use it, I probably will if I just feel like just blitzing through the rest of the game. Which I kinda feel like I will at some point.

>love the idea of tracking each Pokemon's performance so meticulously, never thought to do that before.
I feel like the table I have right now is pretty basic. I used to have an "assist" column, which was when a pokemon either did direct damage to, or applied status to a Pokemon that a different Pokemon got the kill on. Though it eventually became too much to track without completely ruining the flow of gameplay. Especially with Unbound's switch AI on Expert mode.

I also played around with the idea of separating each individual Pokemon, rather than grouping the evolution line together. I think it'd give off a better measure of "This Pokemon is great up to X point" or "This Pokemon is really good once you can evolve it." Like for example, Hariyama basically stopped seeing use entirely after the second gym, but I don't know. Felt like it'd make the table too large. This actually my first time tracking Pokemon stats, so I'm sure I'll be able to refine the process.
>>
>>59129144
To do anything you can't do in binary you need some knowledge. The setup is a nightmare, too.
>>
>>59129160
And anything you can do in binary is much easier in decomp. If you want to just make a new region hack with standard 8 Gyms + Evil Team formula in decomp, it's actually really easy because it's the same few lines over and over again. Making new sprites, maps, etc. is harder than anything programming wise.

>Setup is a nightmare
Not really? It's literally just doing what the guide says.

>Giratina Strikes Back
I used Teleport to get back across the ocean a while ago. Now just done with Valen Co. in Winford City, getting called back home, but the ferry is gone, probably on the other side where I left it. No surf or fly yet.
Am I fucked? Are there any save editors for romhacks?
>>
>>59130980 (me)
Found a noclip code. Took a few tries to not get stuck in the water with it, but that did the trick.
>>
>>59130980
Huh, I didn't know that was possible. I guess you could get creative by using a cheat code to walk on water and turn off encounters. I doubt this is one of the games with a creator with his head up his ass going out of the way to invalidate cheat codes. Remember, this game is based on Ruby, so Emerald cheat codes won't work.
>>
>>59131055
Thanks, anon, I did just that. Do romhacks always use the cheat codes of the games they're based on? And what are some examples of hacks that have them disabled?
>>
>>59131081
>Do romhacks always use the cheat codes of the games they're based on?
Yes. For example, most Emerald hacks don't change parts of the code that the cheats relate to, so they will still work. While rare (and I forgot what they are) there are some devs that make minor changes to preserve the integrity of their games and make the cheats unable to work. There is also the case of Pokemon Clover that has the cheats still working, but the game has a way of detecting if cheats are ever used. Even when devs want to prevent cheating, cheats could still work, but no one is going to take the time to find new codes.

Some games can also unintentionally mess with cheats relating to items or pokemon just by adding or replacing them. However, unintentional blocking of things like full pokedex or wall walking is rare. The more changes you see to things like UI or mechanics, the less likely know cheat codes will function properly.

Because of the primitive nature of gen4+ hacking, codes for those games should have a 100% success rate.
>>
>>59130764
I think you can turn it off by building it in faithful mode if you dont want the added type changes.
>>
>>59131081
As the other anon said usually it does. With the decomps it might not work as much since how action replay and gameshark codes work is in code verything is just numbers of 1s and 0s. A code and its numbers basically is telling the game to look at an address be it a pokemon or an item or collision and then injecting a number to change that value. In your case telling it to turn off a collision.

In the past this would work most of the time as we were literally hacking the rom though in a lot of decomps as its source code the rom itself is being made anew with entirely new addresses so some codes may not work at all.

>>59131289

>>
Playing a Black 2 romhack and it just hit me that most romhacks for gen 5(and even 4?) are pretty much just difficulty mods with some more modern tweaks or learnsets, stats, typing additions. Nothing entirely new, really.
>>
>>59131383
Well yeah the freedom with ROM hackING on DS is nothing compared to GBA lol
>>
>>59131289
the official ones either need evolutions, new forms, redone identity, or be something that you were unlikely to have used in a previous playthrough of the official games. it's bad to have pokemon in your dex that solely exist as fodder or play exactly like they did before, but it's even worse if you're introducing new pokemon as the intentionality of the dex is the point. if you have gen 4 pidgeot with no changes in your game with 80+ new pokemon, then that is bad game design.
>>
>>59131471
I assumed that was the reason, but why is that the case? Just that the engine is harder to work with?
>>
>>59131528
Yep, and the tools with GBA are so good that most people work with GBA. Due to that there isn't a real demand for people to make more tools.

Not only that, importing new pokemon or battle sprites into gen 5 is near impossible for reasons. Making new overworld assets for gen 4 or 5 is a pain in the ass since it means creating new 3D models and that's so much more work than drawing a new kind of house.
>>
>>59131517

>>
>>59126114
This looks sick as hell, yugioh cards as pokemon
>>
>>59126114
What hack is this?
>>
>>59131831
Skarmory is the ideal example of a returning pokemon that has nothing new. Originally a late game low encounter version exclusive pokemon is now mid game in a recognizable area and with a new significant move (spikes). Sandshrew functions about the same and is also pretty bad (and a TM hog) with the only difference being available slightly later.
>>
>>59132110
It’s not a real solution, but maybe you could design the encounters in HM areas so that those HMs are slightly more useful? Have a few trainers in and around and area you need dive for with charge up moves.
I think that’s a good idea in general, really. When some rando trainer or boss does something you happen to have a counter for you feel like a master. Aim for that. If you get the shock wave TM on route 3, put some double team guys on route 4, stuff like that. Just don’t be too obvious about it.
>>
>>59132110
Dive up waterfalls, now you only need two.

what is the best hack for gold silver crystal? Me and my bro just beat PURERGBLUDO. Well he actually beat it I still need two badges and clear the dex and move dex and some of the bonus content postgame stuff. I've heard of crystal clear does it hold a candle to the pureRGB experience? PureRGB I cannot glaze enough just some little things like making dodrio flying ground I would never use that shitter but this made him an absolute monster. Sandslash has always been great but the ground/normal for stab slash MUAH chefs kiss. Making pinsir a bug fighting the different colors in different regions. Slight changes to moves. It's got heart and god dammit it makes for such a delightful revisit that I could not get if I tried playing vanilla or fire red leaf green.

>Girls Hunter
Grindfest lesboslop that takes a turn into body horror and amputeeshit. Vaguely interesting if you want to see the depths of porn sickness
>Psychic Adventures
Turns out making you start with a Drowzee is actually a negative. It's just Fire Red with a half-baked lewd feature.
>Mind and Body
Short and featurebloated. The art is decent I guess? I picked Gastly which makes all the girls possessed but I'm assuming Abra is for people who don't like that.
>Naughty version
Fine from what little I played. The sexual stuff became weak background dressing when my pokemon autism kicked in though.
>Feral F
Really fucking slow because it's based on an older version of Essentials without speed up that you have to do fuckery with to enable debug. The game is otherwise just Fire Red.

Honestly as someone who checked them out for novelty and not because I need porn in my video games Girls Hunter is probably the most interesting. I'd really struggle to recommend any of these over the majority of modern romhacks though.

shit feels better when you can learn to transform parts of the environment into something useful, and it makes everything you find valuable in some form

>>
I was originally going to make my starters be Treecko, Charmander and Squirtle because I like bipedal reptiles but it feels weird to have two gen 1 starters and a gen 3 starter thrown in, I could replace Squirtle with Totodile and keep the theme going and have one starter per gen even though I like Squirtle better. >>
I dunno, I kinda didn't vibe with Seaglass. And it's not "Ew black people" even though I'm racist. I just hate Pokémon getting random type changes and the Pokémon availability is too overtuned, way too easy to build a busted team. Also I think the art style is really ugly after playing through it, half the assets are hyper detailed sprites that look at home with Chrono Trigger and the other half are just mspaint fill tool. And enjoying the unique art is the entire hook of this romhack so if I hate it then I'm stuffed!

shame. i combed through the Twitter posts as best i could (or as best i could tolerate), he mentioned using PokémonSDK so was it not intended as a full game at some point? pic is of 'Crown Pokémon'.

You guys have any thoughts on Pokemon Tectonic? I got recommended it by some guy on /v/ and it seems neat so far, up to the 4th gym. Plot seems kinda cringe if it's going in the direction it seems to be going, but other than that I find that I dig the sorta "total overhaul" thing its got going on, balance-wise. It might be too many changes for a lot of people to still feel like it's "Pokemon" though. I just really appreciate its wholehearted attempts to create a niche for every single Pokemon, even if I don't feel like it quite gets there. Definitely the kinda shit you're only ever going to see in a fangame. The handful of fakemon regional forms are pretty lame and overdesigned but at least there's not a lot of them and they're not given any real focus on the plot so you can just ignore em.

just do the thing where you just need the Pokemon in your party to use field moves but they don't need to actually learn the HM. that way you still get the flavour of using your Pokemon to navigate the world and needing to have the right Pokemon, but you don't need to load their movesets up with a bunch of junk. best of both worlds.
>>
hehe
>>
>>59150612
I think that is a bandaid fix that doesn't actually solve anything. If you manage to not have something that learns Surf and there's a pond in your way, you still have to run back to the nearest PC to swap out a party member. Just go all-in with a ride pager if you're going to do that. And if you still want to encourage people to use their own Pokemon, make the ride pager pay per use.

the point is to preserve the feeling of using your own Pokemon to traverse the world, which I agree with the other poster is soulful and adds a lot to the roleplaying experience. I don't want to diminish that, and I don't think there's anything wrong with it. yes, you should need to have a Pokemon that can surf to traverse water. but, I don't think that adding the restriction of needing HMs taking up moveslots on top of that is necessary. it's enough that you need to have the Pokemon in your party, that still makes you think about your party comp and feel connected to the world through your Pokemon. the HM moveslot on top of that is just another layer of obstruction. I don't think you need to go all the way and remove any friction at all for the sake of QoL, but having two layers of friction probably isn't needed.
