Ascended Heroes ETBs are skyrocketing in value, hasn't even been a month yet and market price is already $130. It doesn't make sense to rip it open anymore, just sell it and buy the singles you want. Or keep holding because it will become a $500 ETB in the next 3-4 years like what's happened to Evolving Skies, except with better pull rates, Pikachu and god packs.

I might start collecting"Pokémon products because I have to uphold to cult personality types on a random basket weaving anime forum"again. I stopped because I became less interested as the deal ran out and my personal stock got higher and higher. but since I know enough about the TCG set lists and promo products, I feel like I should start buying out cheap promo cards and just grade them myself later down the road when all of a sudden they might be worth more than I initially paid for. Decisions decisions.

If Pokemon cards ever become worthless, it'll happen when the dollar becomes toilet paper too so you'll have bigger things to worry about when that time comes.

Possibly. There's so much product out there, that it's impossible a modern set would hold value like vintage when the pop eventually comes. Definitely a strong argument that it's mostly scalpers selling to scalpers, and once the ball starts rolling sealed will be a race to the bottom.
On the other hand, all the streaming pack openings and similar decreases supply in a way you didn't see in, say, Beanie Babies or 90s Comics.
I wouldn't be holding sealed for 10+ years, but if you can buy at $60 and sell six months later at $120, that's just good business. And is exactly the mindset that can cause a bubble.

I think it's less a bubble, more akin to pre-emptive pumping. Basically modern is speedrunning the price change. It's not actually going to appreciate further than any vintage. It's just reaching high prices way earlier. People know it will go past MSRP sooner or later, so they pre-emptively grab what they can and it goes to being a rare set straight away.
Evolving Skies is what, $3k for one of the most valued modern sets?? Shit is nowhere near base sets. I don't know how much was printed in comparison, but it doesn't look like a bubble, just a rush to profit.

You made a great point in this. The sealed product will retain a certain price while the single product should drop price according to the printing rates
>>59169187
A rush for profit is like the other anon is saying with it being a race to the bottom like with the television market and now sony losing everything to tlc

>how much was printed
I saw somewhere that roughly 75 billion have been printed in total, and in 2024 they printed 11b, 10b in 2025. Roughly 2bil cards for each of the 5-6 sets each year.
By comparison, each of Base Set, Jungle, and Fossil had 8-10 print runs of 60k booster boxes each, each box has a little under 400 cards - puts the "true vintage" sets at no more than 240m cards printed per set, and Base was split between shadowless, 1st edition, and unlimited.
So you're looking at 10x more of the modern sets printed than the most hype original sets. Now the rarest chase cards in modern sets are far more packs per pull than a holo Charizard was in Base set, so they may well have similar starting populations, before figuring in survival to today.
All I can take away from this, personally, is that anything but the rarest cards printed today won't hold any meaningful value. Those rarest ones might, but it depends on if demand is driven by "investing" and dries up if the bottom drops out, or if demand is truly "collectors" who pull population out of rotation for long stretches.

This is the only reasonable take in this market. Even if you don't want to sell your cards, it's smarter to just scalp and resell so that you can reinvest to buy what you want. It's toxic, but it makes sense. I'm holding my ETBs at the moment, not with the intent of selling, but if it ever gets to the point where you can buy most of the chase cards in a set by selling one, like has happened with 151, it only makes sense. And if it crashes, I'll rip and be happy that way, regardless of outcome

Post here since this is consumerism general.
The new shirts on pc are really sick. There’s a ton of really ugly hype beast slop that looks like it’s getting more attention, which is great because it means I can get the Explore stuff which actually looks amazing. Probably going to get the Hoenn and Unova ones though I’d prefer Johto and Galar or Paldea if they had my favorite mons from
The region instead of Scream Tail and fucking Marill. Sinnoh is a maybe because Toekiss with a mountain is pretty cool too.

Price manipulation is a complicated term for the idea that currently there are more profits to be had. Other than that it's the same with mtg nerds farming product for themselves and then setting the stakes, which will have no reason to change if they are able to hold onto dead capital
