This video explains it all in detail

Basically DC is a lot easier and more limited while N64 is harder and has a deeper scoring system
>>
>>12387547
Not even close, it’s way easier. In N64 version, you have to collect fruit to fill up your super meter. In Dreamcast version, it fills up by destroying things. Using your super destroys things, so you basically get to use spam it indefinitely; most bosses can be defeated by mashing a single button. Also annoying as fuck to play on an actual Dreamcast, you can tell the game wasn’t created with that controller in mind.

As it turns out, there are now TWO English translations for this game that released a day apart from each other.

Which one is the better one?

Each 100 hits in consecutive, you open a portal to the grandma shop, you'll see the whirling circle with a number, which shows you how many upgrades you can you from the shop.
Go to that circle and either: upgrade riki shots, mami shots, HP max or nothing (if you pick nothing it gives you a lot of points)
Being able to get huge numbers of combo hits mostly depends on locations, like the stationary missile launchers. Always try to release the Z button at the last minute for max effectivity. Have in mind this game gives you no iframes so if you're too slow it's over

>Being able to get huge numbers of combo hits mostly depends on locations, like the stationary missile launchers. Always try to release the Z button at the last minute for max effectivity.
Basically certain areas in the game are made so that you can farm combos for upgrades, you can also bait some enemies together so they're all shooting at you at the same time and thus get more points.
Combos I think exclusively work when you blow up the missile bomb, otherwise you wouldn't be able to do over 100 consecutive hits.
There's one level, can't remember the number, that starts with bangai O being surrounded entirely with small blue blocks, maybe you first instinct is to shoot through them regularly to make way but you should release the bomb to cause an immense reaction explosion and get a lot of hundreds of hits easily.
Some levels let you upgrade more than others, and the game is balanced toward it.
The final level basically requires you to upgrade a lot (like level 10 of Riki at least) to face off the final boss and not get instantly wrecked.
Most of the bosses in the game are jokes (a subversion for Treasure games) but the final boss is tough, basically has the same power as Bangai O.

Is this a
>"1st" guy: I relese my hakku =)
>other guy: bijshwyuzhu, WHAT?! You impatient sack of... *immediately drops was he has and leaves*
situation, or what?
Also, the Dreamcast translations (I think PAL and NTSC are slightly different) were iconic in their own right. Are these N64 ones brand new, or are they based on them?

Isn't that the point of most fan translations? To surpass the old official ones that may not be so accurate.
Anyway, in the case of this game, while most of the text is the same as the DC one, there's some dialogues and characters that are on N64 but not on DC and vice versa, so there really isn't an official translation of the N64 original and DC doesn't really count.
>>
>>12395134
Accuracy is kind of a meme at this point once you realize many fan translators in private are cutthroat pirates who bitch at each other for not conforming to their unoriginal opinions and will resort to subterfuge, with half of them these days being basement dwellers who mindlessly chuck text in a machine and then just sort of write something that sounds natural around it. But you know what? It seems like there's no bad blood between them and they got to laugh it off as a funny coincidence, so that's cool of them.

Apparently (I'm looking up the Dreamcast manual on Sega Retro) they're known as「SF虎巣喪組)」which is the kind of bs kanji name you see out of dramatic-sounding martial arts moves in media, but to break it down, it stands for something like "SF (Space Fruit) Tiger's Nest of Mourning Gang". But if you look at the furigana (hiragana above the kanji) the made-up compound is read and pronounced as「こすもぐみ」(kosumo). So because it's a mouthful in English and you run into textbox issues writing it out in full, the DC translation simplified it with a more literal transliteration and rendered the phonetic "kosumo" as Kosmo. I don't know if the Japanese was intended to have a double-meaning to resemble the English word "Cosmo", but given it's an unserious game, probably. So the English version is one valid way of doing it. The alternate translation wanted to show off the difference, but it still had to be truncated anyway. To be honest, I'd prefer either the official version or a translation that's supposed to sound goofy, because I don't remember this game having any particular tiger theme.

This is just amateur translation. Some gangs in Japan use eye dialects to spell out their names. Since we obviously can't spell out words phonetically with symbols in English, we always prioritize phonetic meaning, not semantic. Here it's clearly "cosmo," so it should be written such. Calling it Tiger Gang just tells me the guy doesn't know what he's looking at.
>>
Other than Tiger Gang, how is the rest of the translation? How does it compare to the other one, besides fonts?
Also what's the story behind 2 translations released the same day?? Were the guys in contact with each other? Did they announce anywhere they were working on it?
I can imagine maybe one of them released it and the other guy was sitting on his own and thought he'd might as well release it too
>>
>>12388149
>that memey "lookatme" youtube announcement in the first link
Thank CHRIST the other translation dropped their work ASAP to mitigate the damage the first would've accrued.

... I think you're right. (And I had a brainfart, considering "Space Fruits" of course they had loanwords in mind.) In other words, what probably happened was,
>how do we express a nonstandard spelling of 'cosmo'?
>flip the 'c' to a 'k'
Big kudos to deadsnare for keeping it intact; I judged his readme too quickly for the mention of fan-translation profanity, but maybe he probably just didn't smooth some rough edges out due to being blindsighted. Also I just noticed the GammaTrove version doesn't have a readme. I really suspect that was machine/AI-translated, so they're getting craftier having to avoid mentioning that.

The font autism to preserve JP differences in the deadsnare version really speaks to me as someone with an eye for those aestheticsbut I do personally prefer the style of the EN DC logo that the GammaTrove ported over even though I understand precisely that the custom version was trying to simulate the sharper JP logo. What tools did they use to make their hacks, btw?

The one that released the following day, yeah. The author did every aspect himself, including the graphic design, instead of begging for helpers to squeeze it through like the initial uploader. I really want to know what the story is between these two hacks, but they probably don't want to talk about it.
>>12403524
The in-game English logo is the same but the translation is tweaked/improved between the PAL and NTSC releases (albeit the latter has graphical censorship).
>>
>>
>>12388149
After a quick comparison I'd say the deadsnare translation leaves a FAR better impression, not just the amazing font work but also the wording is a lot less awkward. Sad to see it's the less downloaded one when it seems like a lot more work went into it.
I bet this is going to be one of those things /vr/ acts elitist about going forward, telling people they "didn't play the game" for playing the wrong fan translation or something.

>>12404145
You can compare the DC titlescreen versions here in the infobox: https://segaretro.org/Bangai-O

>Sad to see it's the less downloaded one when it seems like a lot more work went into it.
Too early to tell, but I guess this is proof that 24 hours doesn't make a difference: first wins. That, or (and I haven't looked this up but I wouldn't be surprised a lot of smallnames do this) first guy is spamming socials. But at least you can say that it's -A- translation and not just an edited port of the DC version, right?
>>
>>
>>
>>12404210
It's definitely the socials thing. Deadsnare didn't advertise their hack at all. They uploaded it, and that's it. They didn't even give it a News Submission on romhacking.net. Extremely based, but not conducive to popularity.
>>
>>12405196
Same deal with Pokemon Crystal. Everyone in the Pokemon fandom talks about Crystal Legacy as the best hack ever made because a dipshit Poketuber made it and slammed it everywhere. Doesn't matter that Perfect Crystal is a better vanilla hack or that Sour and Polished are far better overhauls: we're pushing the one with retarded Giovanni fanfiction in it instead.

Can we just ban for life every hacker/modder who uses social media? These people aren't doing nice things, they're hacking junk they don't own because they failed at making their own games and want to make some use of the handle they made for their broken dreams just for the quick dopamine hits.

I'm glad people are scratching off Treasure's JP-only releases, even though Bangai-O is by no means obscure in their catalog.
Silhouette Mirage also got its first proper, unfucked translation 2 years ago. Here's hoping for Rakugaki Showtime.

Remember when Guardian Heroes got a full retranslation when it was released on XBLA?
Good thing Treaaure would probably re-release Missile Fury or Spirits before they'd revisit the original Bangai-O, I don't envy the retranslator who has to navigate multiple translations to make sure his work doesn't look too similar to any one.

I'm surprised that adding the full text translation along with the patch, for those who just want to read through it, isn't a common practice among fantranslations
>>

>>12387453
I like these games, but I'm confused as to why not just one, but two groups wasted the effort doing a fan translation of the N64 version when the Dreamcast version has been officially translated for over 25 years. Surely all they needed to do was port over the DC translation, the translators could have been spending that time translating something that had never been translated before.
>>
>>
>>12419070
>>12419137
Not just that, but even if you ported the Dreamcast dialogue over, how would you handle the original exchanges? You'd have to deliberately add errors to your script in order to make something in the style of the original game.
>>
>>12419070
While most of the game is the same, Dreamcast has some new characters, and at the same time is missing some from N64
But yeah I get what you mean, I feel the same about people doing fangames: why not make something original?
But I guess it's a way to show love for something you like. Re-translations of games is something common, but it is very curious that 2 translations dropped on the same day. Truly Bangai-O is special like that.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>12420685
It's interesting considering Bangai-O was apparently popular enough to get two sequels meanwhile Ikaruga has only ever been the one single game re-released over and over again, and yet I still agree with you that Ikaruga is better known. It's like an untouchable legend that nobody is brave enough to follow up on.

This thread got autosaged for some reason despite still having hundreds of posts left, or does it happen automatically to threads older than two weeks? I've never seen that on any other board so that would be weird, unless this board has a problem with some schizo bumping old threads endlessly.
