You have just started a new quest.
What is the first thing you do?

After getting the sword, go to areas with blue enemies so that I can get bombs. Then whatever overworld bonuses I can remember, and if I manage to find those big rupee rewards, maybe even get the blue tunic. After that it's time to tackle some dungeons.

If you know what you’re doing, you can pick up a ton of stuff before you enter the first dungeon.
>3 hearts containers
>magical shield
>power bracelet
>blue candle
>blue ring
>white sword
>red potion
>bombs
>arrows
>bait

others have done pretty nice work on celebrating it at least, enjoy a very competent retrospective with high production values

Playing through for the first time in years. I always thought this was the best game in the series, and it’s looking like my opinion hasn’t changed. I remember bombing every feasible wall and lighting every bush my first time playing. I thought I’d forget where most of the secrets are, but it seems like I’ve already gotten all of the secret cave heart containers. I’ve even had to pay two guys for breaking their door (probably the worst part of the game, but at least they’re infrequent and only twenty rupees a pop. I remember it being much more common in the second quest and with a worse penalty). Went through Levels 1-4 in order, but now I’m doing 8 just to get the master key. I’ve got the Blue Tunic and Master sword as well, or whatever the strongest sword is called in this game. I’ve only died once so far, I choked badly against one of the blue things with four mouths in Level 4 (wasted all my bombs on him too).

wood sword
bombs
container 1
container 2
white sword
Level-1
*Candle, Rupees, Arrow, Blue Ring, Magic Shield?
Level-3
At this point I just go with my gut. I try to get the magical sword before doing Level-6.
I don't do RNG manip or anything, one time I got trolled so hard trying and failing to get bombs that I wound up doing Level-2 before anything else.

packaged with the english game, when I played the japanese game I had to cope with this page of the manual. Luckily it was very helpful because I didnt find dungeon 2 for a very long time.

Finally finished. I was bombing every wall in Level 9 to find the Red Mail, but I forgot where it is. So, I just grabbed the silver arrows and killed Ganon. Dungeon order was 1-2-3-4-8-5-7-6-9; Kind of dull, but I was mostly playing it safe because I forgot which items were needed to get through certain dungeons. I want to do 8 first next playthrough.
>>12403006
Yeah, I’m somewhat tempted to give it a shot, but I remember it being a slog. But I know where most of the caves are in the first quest, so it’d be nice to scour the map for secrets again.

Consider shooting the like-likes with arrows.
>>12403954
Ah, right, I had it backwards. Ghoma blocks the key and Gleeok is the final boss.
If you know the game well, though, you'll easily have a surplus of keys by the end anyway.
>>
>>
>>12404248
That's the advice, take it or leave it. There's no silver bullet.
Losing the shield sucks, it's useful against the wizrobes.
Arrows have no animation, so it lets you focus on fighting the wizards. If a like-like gets too close you can just hit it with an arrow without committing to the full sword animation.

I just finished beating the 2nd Quest again (for like the 50th time in my life) yesterday on my Game & Watch Zelda edition. I'm actually really impressed with this. I bought it because I was going through a bit of a "Zelda phase" and I just started a new job, so I thought it would be a cool little desk decoration to spruce up the desk at work. I was shocked at how high quality the whole thing was, and I didn't even realize it had Zelda 1, 2, and Link's Awakening on it, along with the other games. I take it home with me on the weekends just so I can stare at it on my computer desk and hear it chime a "Do do do dooooot" at the top of the hour. A+. Actually well done, Nintendo.
Either way, Zelda 1 holds up as always. Though I rushed dungeon 8 and 9 cause I wanted to finish it before midnight, so I didn't rely on just my memory for that one this time around, but I managed to get the credits around 11:45 at night.
Damn I love the Legend of Zelda series.

In addition to the other anon, I would recommend you take it into habit to approach them a little bit more slower, focus on the orange wizzrobes first, and then try to always approach them from straight on aligned with the tile they're sitting on. Try to approach from the half way mark (walk on the lines). I find them way easier than the Darknuts.

It’s nice once you get the red book and you’re able to shoot flames, kind of becomes my go to weapon in later dungeons because it lights up dark rooms and it’s an effective long rage weapon against a fair amount of enemies. Not required at all though.
>>
>>12405271
Not required for anything, just a nice free ranged attack that can't be disabled by bubbles. Arrows are better but cost rupees. The wand itself also does damage if you swing it while a spell is in the air.
>>12405483
that's convenient, but I also find it annoying because the flames can hit you, so you have to be careful not to hit an enemy near you.

>but last time I played, those fuckers fucked up my run. I got rusty af.
Same. In my teenage years at my peak, I cleared a 3 death-only run of Zelda 2 from a new game. I don't think I'll ever get close to that again.

The magic book upgrade should have been a single tile bomb-blast. That way bombs still have value, as well as the red candle, which essentially does what the book does, but earlier anyways. I can't believe a fucking mario-themed zelda hack gave me this idea, but in that game the book was just a normal bomb blast, which I think might be TOO overpowered in comparison. Making it a single is also nice since you can save money and bombs without worrying about breaking walls for shortcuts and secrets.

Zelda 1 is my favorite one in the series but I feel like it's not appreciated enough.
It's not even a cryptic game, I guess most people hate it because they don't bother to read the manual

Even the most “cryptic” stuff like Level 7 is laid out rather explicitly.

I'd agree with this, except Miyamoto once said in an interview that he intentionally designed Zelda 1 to be cryptic and require your friends to solve. He did that because he saw a sub-culture pop up in arcades around Tower of Duraga, where the game was insanely cryptic but kids were gathering around and sharing secrets with each other. He wanted to recreate that in Zelda 1.
Also I don't believe anyone failed to find level 7, there's an old man that tells you there's a secret where fairies don't live, and that's the only lake. There are also just tons of cases of people just trying to use the recorder normally and accidentally warping out of there.

I had some trouble with it. I was like 8 or 9. I don't remember how long it actually took to figure out but it felt like forever at that age. I was pretty sure I had the right screen I just didn't know what to do. Eventually I blew the whistle and still remember the excitement when the tornado didn't appear. That little 'found a secret' jingle has a completely different feel in situations like that. Got stuck again for a bit on the grumble goriya.

The best way to game.
