Post real retro hoaxes and mockups, stuff from printed magazines.
Pic related was published in a magazine I had as a kid, in 1995. The magazine stated that it was a hoax but I remember wanting it to be real. They also said "you can do this with a computer" and I remember thinking they actually got all these characters playable on MKII on a computer, I didn't realize they were talking about image editing.
Well, of course later on with romhacking and mugen and stuff something like this would be possible, but I don't think romhacking a game like MK to add playable characters would have been possible in 1995, or at least I imagine it would have been too difficult

for mk images specifically there used to be this guy in the 90s named ratman that had this mk fan site ratman.org or something with all types of this stuff posted. i was able to save a lot of it from wayback machine. i used to print this stupid stuff out and bring it to school in a folder to show it off.

kind of the opposite but I remember I called bullshit on a kid from elementary school because he claimed that he found a secret level in Command & Conquer Red Alert where you fight giant ants

I rolled my eyes and said "yeah right" and he got pretty mad

years later I found out he was telling the truth and I was just being a dick

im sorry for doubting you, kev

youre joking. I did just make that up.

who is raping these screenshots with AI?

I remember actually reading that when it was first published.

Not sure if this counts as a hoax but this british magazine claimed that there was a hidden secret character in Sonic 3 & Knuckles called Rankles the Otter and whoever found him first would win a million pounds, apparantly there were a lot of submissions of this supposed secret character but I can't find them sadly.

There was another hoax about Knuckles originally being a red hedgehog but it's to recent to fit your listed time date, it's also very funny though.
>>

they could dump MD roms back then. just reverse the game a little and replace knuckles sprite with rankles.
>>
>>12408205
rankles just looks like one of those "brainlet wojak" edits applied to knuckles
>>
>>12408319
He doesn't look to far off from knuckle's concept design
>>
>>12408290
I wouldn't be shocked if some of the submissions were just sprite palette swaps, though considering rankles is green and they already had a hard time with knuckle's green socks i'm not sure if this is possible or if the hardware limitations were just that bad, don't quote me on it though.

Not really a hoax but more an early character shelved for reasons unknown. Still the best example I can remember from my childhood.

I saw that image in a magazine as a kid and thought it was a real fatality.

Unlocking Luigi in the original Mario 64 was probably one of the all-time great retro hoaxes and early internet phenomena. I think there were a couple different methods floating out there; I fell for one as a kid and did the whole onerous routine to “unlock” him and thought I’d messed it up when it didn’t work. I have to think it only worked on kids because the steps were so goofy and nonsensical.

I only ever saw it on the mag, what did they show on TV? Was it an actual video with animation? Did they go the extra mile and show a match of Kano vs DK or something like that?

Gotenks and Pilaf in GT Final Bout (PSX).
It was made by a DB fan site, but was printed in a lot of magazines here in Brazil.

There wasn't any gameplay. It was just Aki saying random false cheats and showing a slideshow with the false characters magically appearing on screen one after another. It was only to show off how you can edit pics using photo editors on pc, an absolute novelty at that time.

At first I was mad, but then later on I realized what a great troll it was and laughed about it. Nowadays someone’s parents would try to sue whomever posted something like that for inflicting emotional distress, et al.

Endless rumors and hoaxes on how to get the Tri Force in Zelda OoT, and how to revive Aeris in FFVII. Boy did I actually try a handful of each. Old internet was cool, because it every once in a while somethings like Aeris's ghost in the slum churches were actually true and it made the rest of the stuff seem juuust a bit more believable. I especially loved the Sky Temple rumors and the adult mask that let you transform into adult Link at any time.

There's a mod for that. It's not bad, but not great either.

It's more of an unintentional glitch than anything. Something about her base palette loading first then her dress? I forgot the specifics, but that's essentially the gist of it.

Some uk games magazine had a fake preview for Sonic 2 where you could buy different sneakers between levels with rings, including anti-gravity boots. Looked great.

This pic broke the (minuscule, in comparison) internet of 1999.
Yet it's weirdly undocumented, despite having been an early meme basically.
I wonder if it was made by the actual developers back in Japan, or if it was NoA's work.

The interesting thing about the 3DO is that Valve later attempted the same model with Steam Machines and failed just as quickly.
