Which is the better survival horror game?

Resident Evil 1 or Silent Hill 1?

Both games do things differently and are hardly comparable so the answer will just be that the better one is the one each poster likes more, while the one they like less is gay and shit.
>>
Resi is overall more fun to play.

resident evil is the more tightly designed game, it has better incentives for post game play and has a better balanced default normal. silent hill tends towards sloppy potion chugging on a default play and outside of the convoluted good+ ending doesn't have as strong a case for rank play as resident evil's routing inventory efficiency puzzle.

Siley is much scarier. No game had me sweat, literally fucking sweat while playing it. The atmosphere and sound design is fucking amazing.

Alone in the Dark mogs both of them.

Geez Louise, what games are comparable then? Just Doki Doki Panic and Mario 2?

How do I hit the thumbs up button?

>>12412371
Silent Hill, for one it's actually scary unlike ''dude le doggy window jumscare!!!'', if your HORROR game has little to no horror then it's a bad horror game

RE1 is better and has more reliability for fast fun or casual runs, but Silent Hill 1 also an amazing game and more authentically terrifying in places.

When I was a kid there was a big rivalry which is totally unfounded since the games are fundamentally different despite having since broad similarities. But it never me not play SH1 until like 2011 whereas I got RE1 directors cut around 2000

*RE1 is worse
>>
>>12412371
Both good games!
>>
>>12412371
RE for sure. I love SH but it's piss fucking easy and super tedious compared to RE, and just not as fun to play.
>>
>>12412467
How is it tedious, you have unlimited inventory. RE inventory management is tedious.

Video toys aren't scary.

Silent Hill over Resident Evil, but holy fuck are they both good

I'm just stating a fact.

Huh huh...
>>
>>12413008
Yep, it's weird that when it comes to raw gameplay, survival-horror easily mogs other genres. If you play a RPG for 10 hours, you don't get 10 hours of raw gameplay. Yet in survival-horror every second is rewarding.
>>
>>12412414
It has respawning enemies I heard. That's just off putting to me. I liked the demo back then though, it looked impressive (PC version)
>>
>>12412371
RE1. I find it far more enjoyable to replay. I don't think any Silent Hill has particularly good gameplay.

I just don't find SH scary. I've beaten 1-3 (and F, it was fun). 1 came the closest to scary for sure, but just does not scare me. RE on the otherhand is very stressful due to limited healing items, ammo, and saves. Yeah SH has limited healing items and ammo too, but it's so generous it might as well be infinite.
A stressful situation to me is always more scary than dark places full of monsters who say boo.
Love both series though, and if SH scares you, I'm jealous.
>>
Resident Evil is piss-easy and throws so much ammo at you, you can basically skip the pistol and still kill every single thing you encounter without breaking a sweat.

Silent Hill is much more difficult, and not as generous with resources. Therefore, it's the better survival horror game of the two.

I still love Resident Evil more, though.

>Silent Hill is much more difficult, and not as generous with resources.
>not as generous with resources.
lol
>>
>>12413923
You're coming at it from the perspective of having beaten it many times. The games lose their difficulty on each playthrough as you already understand where to go and the best way to avoid/take care of enemies.
Playing both again for the first time, I guarantee RE is harder. Hunters can practically one hit kill you, and Lord only knows when the last time you saved was. SH has tons of healing items and most enemies are in wide open areas can literally just walk around to avoid using ammo. Also your melee weapon is waaaay more effective than RE's knife.
>>
>>12413923
>and not as generous with resources.
Dude. Give it a replay sometime. The game showers you with ammo and healing items. Besides, the metal pipe is so good that you don't even need to spend ammo most of the time.
>>
>>12413939
Silent Hill stops being "survival" horror the second you get the pipe.
>>
>>12412371
I think the more varied map and better puzzles gives SH1 the win, but I enjoyed both.

RE2 was too samey for me having played RE1 though.
>>
>>12413923
>Silent Hill is much more difficult, and not as generous with resources. Therefore, it's the better survival horror game of the two.
completely wrong, you can't potion chug in resident evil.
>>
>>12413934
>Also your melee weapon is waaaay more effective than RE's knife.
This is what shocked me when I played RE after SH.

Game forces you to get a masters degree just to stab an enemy. In SH you just do it and most of the time you will succeed. In RE you only succeed if your attack was flawless.
>>
>>12412371
SIlent Hill duh!

Plus Director's Cut has an awful soundtrack, no thanks.

You run instead of shoot 99% of the enemies in RE.
>>
SH fucked up having such effective melee weapons
how can i be scared when i have the fucking hammer
>>
>>12412371
Resident evil 1 is better than Silent Hill 1. That wasn't hard to say.
It's not even a fair contest, Resident Evil 3 was already out by the time Silent Hill 1 released.
>>
>>12414940
>You run instead of shoot
Only if you're a fag who doesn't like headshotting zombies with the shotgun.
>>
>>12413919
I came here to say something to the same effect. SH does an outstanding job at crafting an inhospitable and unnerving setting, but the content of the gameplay itself is almost a reassurance in the face of all that. The wealth of means to defend yourself, the uninhibited capacity for resources. Maybe there was something purposeful about this thematically, that the player be well equipped to overcome what fear may be instilled by the what seems at first like an overwhelmingly hostile environment. But contrast that with Resident Evil, which almost works the other way around--the gameplay is there to try and suffocate you and make the act of playing in itself persistently hostile, even as its campier setting gradually loses its edge.
>>
>>12412371

RE1 is funner but SH's atmosphere is kino
>>
>>12412371

I prefer RE because it's more light hearted. SH was just too eerie to me... but a really interesting game.
>>
>>12412414

Beautiful game - remember a buddy of mine playing it a long time ago. I really dug the gfx & atmosphere.
>>
>>12412414
Sell me on this one. I remember frens playing when we were kids but I was too much of a pussy to play a horror game until I was twelve or so. I've since beat re 1-3 and sh 1-3, as well as clocktower 3 and fatal Frame 1. Should I fast track playing alone in the dark?

Today i discovered that someone fixed the retarded ai upscales for the classic trilogy and made them look like something out of a 1999-2000 PC exclusive game
>>
sh is better for the genre
re is a better video game
someone asks me they want a horror game i tell them sh
someone asks me they want a good friday night game i tell them re
>>
>>12412371
Resident Evil is more fun for me, I can get engaged in it easier, while it still being scary.
Silent Hill is scarier though, I feel like I'm truly trapped in a nightmare when I play it, It's basically exactly the kind of thing I had nightmares of as a kid growing up -- familiar places turned into rusted horrorscapes full of evil creatures.

So basically;
RE - Gameplay
SH - Music/Sound, Atmosphere/Graphics

All jokes aside though, out of those 2 options, It's RE; However, best OVERALL survival horror game is SH2.

instant 8 way movement is too fast for the way re zombies are designed. it needed some kind of sprite rotation to mimic tank controls.

Midwit post
Next you will say horror novels are not scary because it's just words on paper
>>
>wow this new crimson head enemy is a pretty cool idea
>WTF WHY DID THEY ADD MORE STUFF THAT REQUIRES ME TO MOVE THROUGH THE ROOMS WITH CRIMSON HEADS MULTIPLE TIMES WTF?!?
>WTF WHY DID THEY ADD CONTENT THEY COULDNT ADD IN THE FIRST PLACE DUE TO TIME AND BUDGET??
>Why didn't they just do another re-release with 1 small change like directors cut or dualshock edition?
People that cry about the GC remakes family tree is all roots.

there exists a sort of play version of fear. there's a similar creeping feeling but without the overwhelming rock of dread in your stomach of a real world scenario. games aren't scary but they can be 'scary'.

I remember this one - wow, so many years have passed. Really creepy game!

they arent comparable. only stupid magazines in the 90s and chat rooms/forums were making it a rivalry. (which I fell for and didnt play SH until 2011). they are both awesome and completely different takes on survival horror
>>
>>12412467
resident evil is also piss easy and at least SH got better puzzles.
>>
>>12422028
silent hill is more scary. I remember when I played it back in 2011 my girlfriend at the time (16) and my little brother (13) were watching me play it like watching a movie and were freaked out.

maybe now in the 2020s after seeing tons of real gore on the internet and high resolution video games (not that we didnt have rotten dot com but its everywhere now) you're just desensitized but Silent Hill has some seriously demonic creepy ass shit
>>
>>12412371
RE1 is more cohesively designed and the more fun game to memorize completely and run over and over again. Despite all of it's groundbreaking 5th Gen 3D modernism, at it's core it still feels like Ninja Gaiden or Megaman 2 or Castlevania and is really fun for repeated casual playthroughs and speedrunning.

Silent Hill, on the other hand, is a much more modern and cinematic game, and outside of RE1's more cohesive design, it is unilaterally better. Silent Hill controls better, plays better, has better level design (the best the series would ever achieve), pushes the hardware further, and is much scarier. When Silent Hill released it was just a completely different game than what we were used to on PS1, every ultra gorey game before that was over the top in some way, Silent Hill was one of the first popular games to execute ultra gore, body horror, and psychological horror all in a single game. It also released in the small 2-3 year window where mainstream AAA games could get away with scenarios/gameplay/storylines involving child abuse, and the spooky "children of the corn elementary school full of zombie ghost kids you have to kill" for the first dungeon has never been topped by any horror game ever.
>>
>>12412371
Resident evil has the better survival mechanics with ammo and storage space being severely limited.
Silent Hill has better horror, since it's not derived from AAAHHH ZOMBIES! which are the most basic bitch horror monster. The weird unexplained otherworld stuff and cults summoning demons they think are gods are creepy and the weird ambient soundtrack just adds to the tension.
>>
>>12422337
I agree with that generally but the Resident Evil horror is also about a giant mega big Pharma corp who employs a lot of people and has a good view in society for helping people is actually making biological weapons and horrors. it was kind of novel in the 90s and 00s; now (re: Pfizer, Purdue) its the norm
