They were great for amateurs to play with while real men used real machines to copy apple games.

They weren't DOS or Win9x?

PC-98 machines used x86 CPUs but they were incompatible with IBM clones for various reasons, including the specialized hardware they use to handle Japanese characters
>>
>>12419106
there were several versions of msdos and windows made specifically for pc98 hardware. NEC once had a monopoly over the "PC" market in japan but during the 1990s the "IBM compatible" hardware was far cheaper than anything NEC could provide, ran all software too, so NEC abandoned their own version of the PC and went with the american version

>including the specialized hardware they use to handle Japanese characters
once upon a time that was one selling feature but windows for pc98 could support japanese natively without any hardware mods. eventually people realized they didn't need NEC's hardware at all and started importing far cheaper 100% ibm compatible hardware and software from neighbouring countries

it's amazing how little this "auster spammer" knows about computers or the nintendo. it's hilarious how he can never post any sources for his fantasy claims he generated using ai. everyone here knows who that pedophile is. thanks for the link. it's always great watching vr's lolcow have a schizo meltdown for two weeks.. because he couldn't post a source? lmao. my fucking sides.

I like this picture of Auster Spammer. His mental illness is so severe that he believes he's in a "secret" irc channel with moderators!

That thread's amusing, rarely have I seen an OP get so completely and utterly humiliated. And we learned a lot about the history of Apple computers in Japan, which is neat!

what happened, auster spammer? you said you were going to trash vr until people died and yet nothing happened? everyone is still here shitting on you and your make believe fantasies about computers? that's embarrassing. did you tell the owner and mods in your secret irc channel about it? lmao.

Why did the Japanese pull a tech Galapagos on themselves? Twice?
Their domestic PC industry got BTFO in the mid-90s because of Windows, and their domestic mobile phone industry got BTFO in the late-00s to early-10s because of the iPhone.

I'd pretend I'm upset that I probably can't discuss Japtops for a while, but we'll probably have moved on before a natural thread occurs halfway through summer anyway.

they had a special version of dos and windows for pc98. the problem was nec couldn't compete with cheaper imports that were ibm compatible and ran all of the latest software
>>
>>12419463
I actually do mess with Japtops though. I even play the Sega Master System and even any of Nintendo's Entertainment Systems (and non-entertainment systems). I even play Atari (but not today).

A temporary monopoly due to language. That's it.
Computers were american centric and based around ASCII. Euros added a few accents and made do but supported all those glyphs for jap was a lot more than most americans were willing to do. So even though the JP computers weren't as good and couldn't keep pace with the west, they had 1st class support for jap language so they win by default. This is also why apple macs did well in japan because while billyg paid lip service with grudging support for shift-jis and the like, apple hired proper IME specialists and made typing the funny squiggle language a breeze. Took windows a decade to properly catch up.

Phones were a similar thing. Input for JP was even more specialised with a 10 digit keypad. But the MAJOR thing was the internet. In the west the cell carriers were being right greedy fuckpigs about the internet, charging enormous per megabyte fees and doing their damndest to kill enthusiasm for the mobile web. But Japan had a problem. SMS just wasn't going to work for them with the character limits when you needed 3-4bytes on average to represent a single character. So they choose to use email. Actual straight up email on the phone dressed up to work like a modern RCS/iMessage chat. It's why in anime they say "meiru" for texts. Also because of low computer adoption and phones connected to the internet, people wanted to browse actual websites made for phone 1st back when we were arguing about netscape vs. IE, so again, they had to develop phones not cucked by western bullshit.

But then the iphone came out and once again provided for the Japs when Nokia, Ericsson, etc. couldn't be fucked.

That, and their superior graphics and sound hardware became a boat anchor. Software was written to interface with this hardware at the bare metal and so any future upgrades had to be register and memory map compatible while still providing meaningful improvements. IBM's offering was beyond basic in comparison, but this had the curious benefit that slapping in a faster CPU meant all round better everything and there were far fewer compatibility issues to deal with when the hardware you have to be compatible with is basically a few RAM chips and a RAMDAC.
You can find lots of messages from PC98 devs championing a "DOS-V" because IBM had given them VGA and a considerably faster CPU so they no longer had to optimise their dithered block copies on an 8MHz cpu.

Absolutely hilarious underage hot take on AI slop.

I hate how a couple of weeb autists have completely ruined all discussion of Japanese PCs on this board.

quick rundown on this thread?

OP is a weeb who got molested by Steve Jobs when he was a small child so he insists that Japanese programmers never used American computers. After being proven wrong he had a melty while everybody laughed at him.
