I just don't understand it.
Why after literally becoming a massive icon and the face of the entire company in the previous generation did Sega ignore the Sonic franchise so hard on the Saturn.
Nintendo came straight out of the gate with a Mario game on the N64. Wow big surprise it's now one of the most legendary iconic games of all time.
Meanwhile Sega couldn't even be bothered to make an original Sonic game on their new console AT ALL.
THEY COULD BARELY BE BOTHERED TO PORT A BAD SONIC GAME THEY DIDN'T EVEN DEVELOP 2 YEARS INTO THE CONSOLES LIFE.
THEY COULDN'T AT LEAST PUMP OUT 1 ORIGINAL 2D SONIC GAME?
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING. WHY. WHY.

I can smell the autism seeping from this post. Would you rather have a couple of minor Sonic titles with one being a compilation of good games or would you want a major Sonic title that's gonna suck? Had X-treme or Saturn or whatever the hell they were working on saw the light of day, you'd most likely be on here asking why they released such a shitty Sonic game.

NTA, but i rather have xtreme over ports and a whatever racing game. Even if it did end up sucking, it would be an interesting concept to fuck around with, like Chaotix.
But really SoA shouldn't have been fags and just let the devs do the back up plan of releasing it as a PC exclusive like Schoolhouse. Sonic had a great run on computers during that era and it likely would have sold well. Better than flushing all the money and work down the shitter with nothing to show, not even recycling the soundtrack for a later game.

>I just don't understand it.
Of the zoomers many catch phrases and slang terms, 3 come to mind:
>HUUUH?
>BUUUUUUHHHHH?
>WHUUUUUH?
What 3 defining phrases, a generation begging for answers, a generation always posing questions, and even finding solutions and resolutions to be utterly bewildering and unsatisfactory. They do not want answers, to them an answer is death. All answers must be soundly denied, no matter how true and definitive they are. They bring no answers of their own. The closest thing to satisfaction is a 4 hour long meandering youtube essay where they can walk away with infinite trivia but no solid grasp on the reality explored.
The other defining trait of the generation being conformism. They seek to conform to systems, routine and discover patterns to explain the (often explained) mysteries of the world writ large. Why is the sky blue? To them it has nothing to do with atmospheric scattering. It's blue because sometimes it's grey and at night, black, so it's only fair for it to be blue sometimes. That's why it's blue.
So when Nintendo has a Mario game...and Sonic is considered the competitor to Mario, and the consoles are competitors to each other...and yet there's no Sonic game on the Sega Saturn?
It completely breaks their systems based mind. "What could have happened!" As if they haven't heard all the reasons and stories so far. All they know is Nintendo is red, Mario is red. Sega is blue, Sonic is blue. They are the ying to each others yang, opposites of the color wheel. Why are the opposites? Because that's their place, in the mind of a Zoomer.

They didn't. Sonic Team was burned out from making nothing but Sonic (remember, that's not what they were hired for) and wanted to make other kinds of games. Sega's American devs at STI worked on Sonic 2 and 3 so the deal was that Sonic Team could take a break to make other games while the team from STI makes the new Sonic game by themselves.
The problem was that the team from STI was so incompetent that they couldn't even get a prototype running on the Saturn. Seriously, go read the interviews it's fucking hilarious, they literally begged Sega to let them make it for the PC instead.
Anyway after a few delays the game was cancelled because it was clear that the STI team was incapable of doing anything. Sonic Team came back to make the new game and started developing a cool game for the Saturn. Unfortunately the Americans screwed up the launch of the Saturn so badly that Sega had to make a new console, so the game switched over to Dreamcast during development. The engine that they made for the Saturn version was recycled as a 3D hub area in Sonic Jam (collection of Sonic 1-3K from the Mega Drive, which was probably mostly aimed at the Japanese market), and the final product released in 1998 on the Dreamcast as Sonic Adventure.
Pic related is some screens from the Saturn build of the game. I hope that it gets leaked someday because I want to play with it.

It's hilarious when the STI devs whine about Yuji Naka being racist against gaijin for scrapping most of their work on Sonic 2 when in reality Sonic Team was saddled with a bunch of newb americans who had no idea what they were doing and pumped out total garbage

I'm an old man who lived through it and I can guarantee a lot of us who were playing videogames at the time were confused about how sega just ignored sonic on the saturn. and how they replaced him with a fucking clown for some ungodly reason

>moving the goalposts
You can use it for established series, dumbo numbo.
>Patently false.
>Super Mario 64 sold 11 million, most of that from the United States.
>Super Mario Bros. (1985) – 40.24 million
>Super Mario Land (1989) – 18.14 million
>Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988) – 17.28 million
>Super Mario World (1990) – 20.61 million
>New Super Mario Bros. (2006) – 30.80 million
>New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009) – 29.90 million
It’s clear that 2D Mario is the preference, even when they faced a colder market. Mario 64 isn't a Mario game–it's a 3D game featuring Mario that looked childish and lame.
