The expansion is shit but you get a hitscan rifle among the new weapons, which is used by human enemies.
There's a part where you get ambushed atop a crashlanded ship by Terran enemies with rocket launchers and assault rifles and you have to take them one by one while covering inside the ship or else they hitscan gangbang you if you take them in the open. It's a bitch to go through but a great section in hindsight.

Easiest way of hit calculation.
Weapon simply has a line where the shot could hit and if that line touches a hitbox when firing it's a hit.
Makes calculation easy an fast because no pesky physical calculations like projectile travel time etc. but obviously means no reaction time.
Players often get hitscan weapons for performance reasons and to give them a not that noticeable advantage. But if the mosters or enemies get them it means once you get into their line of sight you are hit.
Realistic, yes, but since the enemies are usually exendable (clones can spawn infinitely) but the player entitiy the most important asset in the game it is often regarded as unfair und unenjoyable.

why does it have to be lightning? good examples are more comparable to slow electrocution, where the enemy will whittle you down unless prioritized.

in the end hitscan is just one of the tools devs can use, it can be good or bad, most of the time it's just bad, but that's dev fault

Uhm, in Halo 2 Bungie switched most UNSC ones to hitscan (and added new weapons like the BR).
Hitscan rewards straight-up aim and positioning. Projectiles reward flicks, prediction, and movement.
A game needs both or it falls flat. That's why Quake II blew up the LAN/online scene and Q3A became king.
Hitscan: god-tier aim + positioning (railgun)
Projectiles: nasty flicks + movement (rocket launcher)

I like projectiles because you have to aim, correct, and anticipate enemy movement. Most gamers simply can't do it so I get an SMG and blast em at close range while they miss potshots. And getting a long-range shot with a DMR against a moving target feels so rewarding. Hitscan games are too flick heavy and arcadey imo. I still play them, but I have a preference.

Hitscan can work alright when enemies don't have perfect aim. Some games will have hitscan enemies but they'll miss most of their shots as long as you keep strafing in one direction. Usually it's not great though. In something like Half-Life you can still peek from cover and use the shotgun or explosives to avoid taking more damage from the SMG grunts but it still often ends up just feeling like it's a forced loss of health and armor.
