Why don't they make games as good as this anymore?

I beat banjo for the fist time a few months ago using ares. Before I beat it I was thinking it was about a 6.5 but the last cutscenes and final battle raised it to a 7. The game is good but it feels a bit rushed. The lack of transformations for the final areas, how the camera WILL kill you a few times in clankers cavern, how some of the jiggies are just sort of placed around in the latter half of the levels rather than most of them involving some sort of gimmick or challenge like in the first half, and so on.
The game does have a lot of soul though. I'll give it that.

Took a while to hack it open.
For a long time you could only halfway modify the game. For example you had no access to actors, meaning you could not spawn jiggies, activate effects etc.
That's why Banjo-Dreamie had to resort to the notes as the main collectible.
But since the game has finalle been opened fully there have come out quite a few BK hacks, the Kurko ones like Jiggies of Time and Nostalgia64 being some of the most well-known ones.
Still, it needs time to catch up. When SM64 was already wide open BK mods still had to deal with those limitations.

This makes a hell of a lot of sense though. Mario 64 has a heap of really interesting mechanics, with levels that are generally not well designed enough to take advantage of them. So hacks really serve a purpose of finishing the game's potential that it couldn't realize.

Banjo is mostly the opposite. Imaginative level design and ideas that escalate and improve as they progress across both of the games and end up clever enough that a given amateur hacker would have it rough trying to replicate what they do, because they largely already take advantage of a good portion of the potential of their own mechanics already.

Zelda is another thing entirely from both of them. It allows for much greater total depth outright, a ton of which is already realized in the existing games, but still has greater untapped potential than the platformers due to just how wide a variety of things it manages to do very well at the same time. Hacks have already slotted in Mario 64's mechanics into Zelda as a new form, so a great deal of what you can do with Mario hacks can be done in Zelda anyway.

So to argue with you someone would have to break the rules, the question is both insanely stupid and inviting an echo chamber. Old good new bad posts have no place on a board where only discussion of old things are allowed anyways.

even with the right tools banjo worlds are significantly more difficult to make due to everything being fully textured.
mario 64 worlds float in the middle of nowhere and have 2 textures copy pasted from a texture library.

Clunky and janky are not terms that can generally be applied to Banjo Kazooie. The game has few bugs, definitely fewer than Mario 64 has.
