So I picked up an N64 today to try and restart my collection again from when I was a kid. Only downside is I dont know what the most optimal way of playing it on a modern tv or even my crt monitor I happen to pick up a few years back. I'd want to stream it to as I feel like I might get back into recording footage for recreational purposes and maybe speedrunning. So any help in the right direction would be appreciated

s-video cables are a must, if your tv has s-video output then its all you need, otherwide get a Retroscaler2x or a retrotink and connect your n64 with svideo on the hdtv.
There's hdmi mods but only do them if you're good at soldering.

whats the best mod though, cause I know Pixelfx has the gem but not sure about other hdmi mods and settings to change

Play it on your crt and forget about the rest. N64 has the ugliest output of any game console ever and you won't be satisfied. If you pursue this you will hate the results guarenteed.

Yeah best you can do is s-video and maybe get a splitter to send it to a retrotink and hdmi capture it. All those digital/deblur/whatever mods just rape the 64 image so it looks insanely broken so you just gotta cope that the console is the blurriest and muddiest fucking thing ever because removing that blur makes it look like sub-32x tier 3d

anything else required for n64? power adapter mods? open source expansion pak? anything like that?

It only really upgrades twice

Once with the upgraded cords, cartridges and then again with a nicer tv/optimized settings

an expansion pack is better than none? The hi rez/graphics modes aren't usually worth it but there's a few exclusive games/crap.

The HDMI mods out there aren't all bad, especially if you're the kind of guy that doesn't want to commit to a CRT

I dont mind the crt as I already have a monitor but im not sure how it would connect in regards to streaming devices

Anon there is no right answer you'll see a wide variety of answers on this board if you stay here long enough. Everyone sees different things, there are tons of people on this board who will argue that the PS2 does not have bad image quality. Emotional factors and current mood play a huge role in shaping our perceptions.

The only right answer is what looks good to your eyeballs. In your case since you have a crt and a modern TV, is to first choose which type of look you want. HDMI mods and upscalers will give a very clean modern look like if you were playing a remastered version of a game or like on Nintendo switch online. Crts do beat hdtvs in every other category through. geometry image histogram and a lot of other things that 95 percent of crt owners can't explain to you. If you want the more authentic look go for the crt.

If you can't decide which one you want, get a retrotink five x and some insurrection s video cables and compare how they look to the crt. If you end up preferring the crt just return the retrotink 5x. Don't believe any videos people post here or on YouTube, because of compression and other reasons you get widely different results depending on who recorded the video, you can look up retrotink 5x captures of the same games and they will look widely different.

good advice, I'll try to keep it in mind cause I was kinda indifferent about the crt since it doesnt have any speakers but good picture quality

hoping this is a good enough example of my endgame, feel free to let me know what in fact I need to make this work as it is a work in progress. just not sure what converter/upscaler or splitter I need or should go with
