Is it the site favorite because it deviates the most from the traditional FF experience out of all the titles or is it the site favorite because it's the most artistically inclined title?

A handful of contrarians doesn't mean the entire site

I think 7 is the more popular here

8 is beloved because it's just a fun game full of wacky ideas and concept + an extremely open battle system

I was 12 in 2000. The perfect age for this game. Every kid who was into video games played it, and I mean everyone, FF8 was more of a 'social gaming experience' to me than Pokémon was.

>beloved because
Music is always one of the Top 3 reasons why ANY game is "beloved."
FF8 is a wonderful example of that.

All the PS1 FF games have excellent presentation. The music and art direction and cutscenes in VIII are all well done but that's true of the other games, too.

What I really like about VIII in particular is
1) you can moderate random battles very early in the game, which mitigates a shitload of tedium. I'm one of those autists who needs to find every item in every area and thoroughly explore everywhere and will backtrack constantly to triple-check places in case I missed everything and being able to just walk from point a to point b without fighting the same 3 enemies 50 fucking times is nice. And one of the reasons you can forego random battles is
2) You're not stuck with the traditional "grind until you're strong enough to progress" leveling system. The junction system filtered the everloving shit of so many retards but for people who actually understood it it was a means to engage in the usual JRPG incremental stat progression without the usual time sink that comes with it. Playing smart and engaging with the systems is faster and more efficient than just brute forcing things, which combined with the ability to mitigate random encounters makes for a game that can have a much, much more comfortable pace than the average JRPG.
3) Triple triad isn't exactly the *best* minigame because it can honestly get a little boring once your deck is OP, but it might be the most useful because card modding can literally replace traditional leveling entirely. And it's a nice bit of worldbuilding in that It enourgaes you to engage with NPCs.
4) Totally subjective but I just think it's comfiest FF game. The music and the asethetic and the more laid-back gameplay options make it the most enjoyable for me.

It's fun and relaxing.
The art design and music are huge factors.
Going into Dollet and imagining I'm in a French seaside village in the 90s... That's the stuff.
There's so much good I could say about it.

I was 12 for VII and 14 for VIII. Like many, I could never really get into the junction system.

Someone should decomp that game as quickly as possible (probably even long time ago there was leak of source of that game if i remember correctly)

It's just contrarianism, it's not that deep.

Still a good game though.

Nah this isn't reddit, doubt the normie hivemind choice would be the most popular here.

Zoomers were a mistake.

It's incredibly native to think this site will have consensus on anything.

I don't know, I played it when I was 19 and could really relate to Squall's living in a dormitory, having mixed feelings about taking on adult responsibilities and being a horny sperg who liked girls but didn't want to actually deal with them
