The Original Xbox was such a fucking behemoth, the fact this port of Half-Life 2 exists on it and not having any downgrades or differences from the PC version is beyond outstanding, such an awesome console.

What? The graphics and framerate are a huge step down from the PC version. And running Half life 2 on PC in 2004 was fairly cheap.
>>
>not having any downgrades or differences from the PC version
>>
>>12420551
>all these miniscule differences are actually improvements
>>
>>12420548
Missing the point on two fronts. The Xbox was released in 2001. You could not have built a PC in 2001 for the same price as the Xbox that would have run Half-Life 2 that well. The port is impressive in the context of the hardware, price and release date, not compared to a fucking gaming PC from several years later. But I suppose it's too much to expect brownoids to appreciate the beauty of limitation and optimization rather than hurr durr framerate go zoom.

No one consider the PS3 a behemoth for being able to run Shadow of Mordor, Watch Dogs and Black Ops 3. Those games run very poorly and ugly, similar to HL2 on Xbox.
Xbox fanboys need to chill the fuck out with the poop game

Resident Evil 4 on the GC look better than this poop and does not run at 10~20 fps

Understand, almost everyone had desktop PCs at that time. The difference from a gaming PC and a regular desktop was really just going out and spending $150 on a video card to toss in to the thing. That was the buy in. Granted, thats not really how it works today as most people have laptops instead.
Its the same way you don't consider your TV a part of the buy in on playing an Xbox. Its basically implicit you already owned one.

Based, you really triggered the retards, OP. The og Xbox was a beast
>>
>>12420662
It was good at playing Xbox games. PC games, not so much.
>>
>>12420662
I’m totally with OP. The Xbox is how I played Half-Life 2, Doom 3 and Morrowind for the first time. This >>12420660 guy is bullshitting.
>>
>>12420718
Based poorfag
>>
>>12420718
Only poors didn't have desktops in their home in 2004.
>>
>>12420763
>>12420765
And there it is. This >>12420660 post is bullshit as charged. Your average person with some shitty Hewlett Packard desktop wasn’t running Half-Life 2 or Doom 3.
>>
>>12420771
you only needed a graphics card and maybe an extra stick of RAM and your shitty HP Pentium 4 could run pretty much anything until Crysis came out
>>
>>12420718
This and same. It's not even that I was poor necessarily, but fat chance my mediocre family computer was going to handle HL2
>>
>>12420776
>w-well all you needed was a new graphics card and RAM

Eyeroll.
>>
>>12420547

Didn't play it
>>
>>12420783
>NOOOOOOOOO YOU COULDN'T JUST SWING BY BEST BUY AND GET A GRAPHICS CARD BACK THEN. IT WAS PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE FOR NORMAL PEOPLE. ONLY RICH CEOS AND BANKERS COULD PLAY HALF-LIFE 2
>>
>not having any downgrades or differences from the PC version is beyond outstanding
Is that so? I've heard that the Xbox version of Half-Life 2 is a harsh downgrade.
>>
>>12420793
You PC fags are always so out of touch.
>>
>>12420797
I accept your concession.
>>
>>12420797
For real. How many people, especially casual gamers, are going to be arsed enough to upgrade their PC to play one game? For someone who just wants to experience the game, the Xbox port fit the ticket even as a massive downgrade.
>>
>>12420797
Out of touch is bragging about playing terrible ports of PC FPS games on a console with a controller.
>>
>>12420804
consolefags confirmed fat lazy retards
>>
>>12420810
If you were an adult working a full time job in 2004, then fine. I was still in high school and the Xbox ports of those games were perfectly good for me at the time.

Kek, he might as well be a console fag.

Half Life 2 isn't good. And PCfags need to stop defending it with their lives ala tendies/snoys defending their games. Same shit, different toilet.
>>
>>12420718
I also enjoy playing PC games on a console after having played the PC version, ofc
But I'm not mentally ill like OP, to the point of saying they are better than the original PC releases.
>>
>>12420985
Man the Soldier of Fortune PS2 port was fucking outstanding. I'd wager even better than the PC version.
>>
>>12420660
It's outside of retro territory but this is basically how I got into PC gaming in 2012. Bought a $150 card and a $50 psu and threw them into the family dell. Was good enough to play all of the source engine games, stalker, witcher 1/2, and dark souls.
>>
>>12420547
Well said. Also, 99% of PC players at the time would have had worse resolution and framerate than Xbox. Not everyone played on a brand new $2000 rig.
>>
>>12420804
>How many people, especially casual gamers, are going to be arsed enough to upgrade their PC to play one game?
Back then? You'd be surprised.
>>
>>12421026
it's honestly insane how many zoomlets are on this board. i thought /vr/ was "unc shit"
>>
>>12421020
>99% of PC players at the time would have had worse resolution and framerate than Xbox.
No. I got it in 05 and ran 1080/60 with an off the shelf Dell with a midrange gpu without making the fan speed. Probably didn't max out the settings but it wasn't an issue.
480/30 is significantly downgraded from that. I'm glad you liked the port, but let's not kid ourselves here.
>>
>>12421038
Correct. HL2 was particularly known for scaling well from low to high range. It was far from being a Crysis type scenario.

It's so easy to debunk all the crap being posted in this thread. Could do this all day just from memory alone.
>>
>>12421038
Half Life 2 may be the best optimized PC game of all time. My PC ran Doom 3 and FEAR like a slideshow but had zero issues with HL2.
>>
>>12421038
>hey everyone, don't you know that the average pc owner in 2005 had a 1080p FHD screen
jesus christ i can't take these discussions.
here's a contemporary ad for a top of the line Sony monitor and even it is only 1280x1024, most people were lucky to have 800x600.

Well you probably are mentally ill because I never said that, retard.

>>
>>12421853
I had a 1920x1200 monitor in '06 and I was in high school making $6.75/hr.
>>
Keep in mind that this board will only get worse
>>
>>12420629
Looks just like how the game used to run on my PC back in the day. HL2 will run on anything, whether it likes it or not.
>>
>>12420828
Bro you have anti social tendencies. Like for real. You're odd and unpleasant, even more so than you're aware of. I'm not trying to gotcha you, you really should try to change. Please don't give up.

Why is fire a 2d texture on the xbox version.
>>
>>12422309
The guy was specifically responding to my anecdote saying I was making it up, I was not. Read more than one post in a chain.
>>
My PC had no GPU so playing HL2 was at 2 frames a second on all low with no lighting or shaders. Literally the G-man intro took over 5 minutes due to how slow the game ran even in that opening scene.

HL2 on Xbox was the first time I was able to play past Ravenholm and it was amazing to see it not be fullbright and running above 10 fps.
>>
>>12422331
You don't tell me what to do.

>>12422329
>Why is fire a 2d texture on the xbox version.
Because it was on the PC version in 2005 as well
>>
>>12422329
>Why is fire a 2d texture on the xbox version.
Fire was also like this on PC before the Orange Box update. Since the anniversary update you can enable it again with the "Classic Effects" setting in options
>>
>>12422346
Apart from this technical gaffe (this is just how particles worked at the time in all versions of direct x) this style of fire looked a lot better than the orange box fire. Also no surprise that a PC redditor didn't know about this.

>>
>>12420793
My dad bought me a $100 graphics card that was on sale at walmart for our PC that also came from walmart on sale for $299 a year before. It definitely cost more than an xbox in 2004 to play HL2 on PC but it wasn't that expensive.

Could portal 1 in theory run on the og xbox?
>>
>>12423028
run like shit probably
>>
>>12423028
I heard sometime ago that an orange box port was being made for the original xbox, which includes TF2 and portal as well as half life so i'm anticipating its possible but homebrewers have to do the work for valve.

Unrelated but I watched this video a few months ago, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXdJKoKrhsc dorky but covers some things like difficulties of importing textures, how binds were setup, maps, compressed files.

Fun but more than anything it shows off the potential for modding the xbox version of hl2.
