The Original Xbox was such a fucking behemoth, the fact this port of Half-Life 2 exists on it and not having any downgrades or differences from the PC version is beyond outstanding, such an awesome console.

Missing the point on two fronts. The Xbox was released in 2001. You could not have built a PC in 2001 for the same price as the Xbox that would have run Half-Life 2 that well. The port is impressive in the context of the hardware, price and release date, not compared to a fucking gaming PC from several years later. But I suppose it's too much to expect brownoids to appreciate the beauty of limitation and optimization rather than hurr durr framerate go zoom.

No one consider the PS3 a behemoth for being able to run Shadow of Mordor, Watch Dogs and Black Ops 3. Those games run very poorly and ugly, similar to HL2 on Xbox.
Xbox fanboys need to chill the fuck out with the poop game
Resident Evil 4 on the GC look better than this poop and does not run at 10~20 fps

Understand, almost everyone had desktop PCs at that time. The difference from a gaming PC and a regular desktop was really just going out and spending $150 on a video card to toss in to the thing. That was the buy in. Granted, thats not really how it works today as most people have laptops instead.
Its the same way you don't consider your TV a part of the buy in on playing an Xbox. Its basically implicit you already owned one.

I’m totally with OP. The Xbox is how I played Half-Life 2, Doom 3 and Morrowind for the first time. This >>12420660 guy is bullshitting.

And there it is. This >>12420660 post is bullshit as charged. Your average person with some shitty Hewlett Packard desktop wasn’t running Half-Life 2 or Doom 3.

For real. How many people, especially casual gamers, are going to be arsed enough to upgrade their PC to play one game? For someone who just wants to experience the game, the Xbox port fit the ticket even as a massive downgrade.

I also enjoy playing PC games on a console after having played the PC version, ofc
But I'm not mentally ill like OP, to the point of saying they are better than the original PC releases.

It's outside of retro territory but this is basically how I got into PC gaming in 2012. Bought a $150 card and a $50 psu and threw them into the family dell. Was good enough to play all of the source engine games, stalker, witcher 1/2, and dark souls.

>99% of PC players at the time would have had worse resolution and framerate than Xbox.
No. I got it in 05 and ran 1080/60 with an off the shelf Dell with a midrange gpu without making the fan speed. Probably didn't max out the settings but it wasn't an issue.
480/30 is significantly downgraded from that. I'm glad you liked the port, but let's not kid ourselves here.

Correct. HL2 was particularly known for scaling well from low to high range. It was far from being a Crysis type scenario.
It's so easy to debunk all the crap being posted in this thread. Could do this all day just from memory alone.

>hey everyone, don't you know that the average pc owner in 2005 had a 1080p FHD screen
jesus christ i can't take these discussions.
here's a contemporary ad for a top of the line Sony monitor and even it is only 1280x1024, most people were lucky to have 800x600.

My PC had no GPU so playing HL2 was at 2 frames a second on all low with no lighting or shaders. Literally the G-man intro took over 5 minutes due to how slow the game ran even in that opening scene.
HL2 on Xbox was the first time I was able to play past Ravenholm and it was amazing to see it not be fullbright and running above 10 fps.

>Why is fire a 2d texture on the xbox version.
Because it was on the PC version in 2005 as well

Fire was also like this on PC before the Orange Box update. Since the anniversary update you can enable it again with the "Classic Effects" setting in options

Apart from this technical gaffe (this is just how particles worked at the time in all versions of direct x) this style of fire looked a lot better than the orange box fire. Also no surprise that a PC redditor didn't know about this.

My dad bought me a $100 graphics card that was on sale at walmart for our PC that also came from walmart on sale for $299 a year before. It definitely cost more than an xbox in 2004 to play HL2 on PC but it wasn't that expensive.

I heard sometime ago that an orange box port was being made for the original xbox, which includes TF2 and portal as well as half life so i'm anticipating its possible but homebrewers have to do the work for valve.

Unrelated but I watched this video a few months ago, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXdJKoKrhsc dorky but covers some things like difficulties of importing textures, how binds were setup, maps, compressed files.
Fun but more than anything it shows off the potential for modding the xbox version of hl2.
