Is there any difference in the cd drive between the PC Engine models in regards of reliability and speed?

Are the Duo and Duo R versions much better in those regards compared to the normal White ones?

I'm not sure. I know the Duo/Duo R use the exact same disc drive.
NEC made their own drives and there's not a lot of information about them compared to the Sega CD's disc drives.
I'm also not willing to do more than 5 minutes of research for you, so that's about all I know.

Idk I got a regular duo because I thought it looked cool. And one thing I didn't expect is that the audio is heavily over filtered and audibly lacks much of the bass. So there's a mod you can do where you knock off a couple of ceramic caps and put weaker ones on. Anyways good luck. I think all of these cd drive pc engine thingies have suicide caps on board.

No difference in speed but the Duo R is more reliable

I've got that terraonion thing from a few years ago. Hope that helps ')

I picked up a Duo R back in the early 2000s, and it still works fine last I checked, even the disc drive, without having replaced caps or anything.
I think I had to reflow the solder on the controller connector port, though.
Are there any good third party controllers? The two first party ones I have feel like dogshit.
