i remember the ending of mgs2 feeling like such a cliffhanger. wondering who the patriots actually were and everything but of course there was no actual payoff just more schizo nonsense with no real meaning

You... joking? The game is not hard to follow at all. Was even more elaborated on in MGS3. The OG Patriots are Eva, Big Boss, Ocelot, etc. By the time of MGS2 they are AI trying to fulfill what they believe to be the end goal vision of Big Boss.
There is nothing deeper. It is literally AI all the way down trying to make some impossible 'vision' happen. There is some obfuscation as the patriot AI does try to use the identities of the 'Philosophers' to hide the patriots real identity (the OG Patriots like Eva and Ocelot, and their current identity of AI). Which is the only confusing thing. Because it is meant to be confusing for Solid/Otacon, a red herring essentially.

I don't understand why every character is so obsessed with the Boss's vision. I only played MGS1 way late on the PC. It was ok, but nothing I'd write home about. There are other games from the time that have better gameplay, other games from the time that have better cutscenes and voice acting, and other games from the time that have both.

It was a stupid revelation to make every member a character that was already established. And in the context of just MGS2 it's incredibly stupid.
