I want to talk about Crash 3
the pros
>the art style is really good, I really like the themes, and the egypt levels are really fun
>coco is cute, and the great wall levels are fun
>on that note, the crash biker levels are fun
>double jump and hurricane spin are good additions to the formula, and the hurricane in particular helps you float over long gaps so if you need to backtrack and cant see ahead of you its a good crutch
the bad
>some really lame level design, especially in the medieval rennasaince fair levels. basically long wide paths with nothing interesting in them whatsoever. Frog village I feel does a horrible job introducing the game and is the textbook example of how boring and bland these kinds of levels are
>relic trials are awful. Half the time youre just spamming slide to dash through the level as fast as you can, and it doesnt feel like youre actually using skill to beat the level as fast as possible, just spamming square and abusing level geometry. Again, the rennaisance levels are the worst for this
>on the note of trials, having to wait until you finish the level to even get to restart the trial, otherwise you have to leave the level and go in again
>the """open world""" jetski levels are fucking awful and the arrow barely even works to point you towards boxes. Oh and sometimes? just know to hold left or right otherwise youll land right on top of a bomb. LOL!
>everything about the submarine/swimming levels sucks. its slow, it feels like youre piloting a tank, and theres little variety between any of them other than the pipes with the turning electric plate. oooh I have to shoot a piece of coral reef, how exciting
>FUCK DINO MIGHT'S SECRET I AM SO FUCKING MAD
>the bosses are awful. Genuinely shit. Nothing but "wait until the boss makes himself vulnerable for no reason" tests of patience
>the powerups also kind of suck. "walk on nitro" especially, It feels like they built the levels first then added the powerups, breaking it open
6.5/10

maybe I should clarify. I also DISLIKE the double jump and hurricane spin because you can only do the jump at the apex of your jump and it feels like it slows you down considerably or have to hyperfocus on your arc instead of the level in front of you, and the hurrican only seems to work if you switch to claw grip to mash the square button while spinning,. otherwise it just stops working and you get dead spins like the kind in the first 2 games

Agreed. The great wall levels are the best Hog Wild stages of the entire series.
>It feels like they built the levels first then added the powerups, breaking it open
A lot of games with unlockable powers have this problem. Castlevania SOTN has the same issue - the game is completely trivialized once you reach a certain point.

Yeah I find the cycles for the underwater stages to be sloppy, can never get a good pulse on them-
>rennasaince fair levels
No the goal of these stages is to allow the most freeform movement and most controllable obstacles. There's only a few but they all escalate challenges in fun ways giving the player *more* control over how they tackle their obstacles. They're very literal follow ups to jungle stages from the second game and flow very similarly. Extremely light obstacles but generous ledges that allow the player to playground in them better than any other stage. There's clear theories being pushed and they're fun to engage with and are unique to those styles of levels. I can't think of a better way to introduce the game.
>relic trials are awful
Apart from underwater stages absolutely not. They're great challenges in literally every stage. It's best to play them as a second lap thru the game and it shows how the levels are extremely well designed to have completely different flow with the running power up while still working well.
>it doesnt feel like youre actually using skill to beat the level as fast as possible
But you are, you're developing it and applying your experimentation to navigate thru or around obstacles, trial and error sure but the satisfaction of a perfect run goes far.
>Again, the rennaisance levels are the worst for this
They're the most freeform.
>having to wait until you finish the level to even get to restart the trial
No. Restart trial is in the pause menu. Did you play the game?
>the """open world""" jetski levels are fucking awful and the arrow barely even works to point you towards boxes
Use environmental cues to find your way, works great.
>everything about the submarine/swimming levels sucks
They needed more polish and tuning.
>FUCK DINO MIGHT'S SECRET
Nah it's fine and a great secret.
>bosses are awful
Best bosses in the series
>powerups also kind of suck. "walk on nitro"
Wrong game.

@rock is this true or are there region differences or something?

Yes, you can restart Time Trials from the pause menu in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, though the behavior varies slightly depending on whether you are playing the original PS1 version or the N. Sane Trilogy remaster.
Pro Tip: If you're going for Platinum Relics and mess up early, it's always better to use the pause menu restart rather than intentionally dying, as it keeps your momentum and avoids the "death" animation/respawn delay.
Would you like some tips on which power-ups make the Platinum Relics easier to obtain?

wrong board maybe but recent water map that's been added to TF2 reminded me how Spyro is the only game to get water right by making you a) not drown and b) swim fast (both also modded in specifically for said TF2 map)
