Was the Game Boy Color a full generational leap from the Game Boy?

Or is it just "Game Boy 1.5"?

It was the Game Boy with a Color display
>>
How about you see for yourself and get back to us?

I think Gameboy 1.5 is accurate. Why would you think otherwise anon? I've seen silly gooses around here argue the Dreamcast is 5th gen. You're not one of them, are you?
>>
Game Boy 1.5. It actually has twice the CPU speed of GB instead of just a color screen which a lot of people don't know but at the same time it came out NINE years after the original model so having color and higher clock speed is not much.
>>
>>12420901
people usually say it as the Game Boy 2
>>
>>12420945
No they didn’t

No one ever said that fagget
>>
>>12420973
Yeah they said it was a new generation

Who said it was 1.5
>>
>>12420935
9 years? holy fuck I didnt realize. I thought it was like 2-4
>>
>>12420891
It's more like Game Boy 1.25 honestly.
>>
>>12420973
Why the hostility bro? You feeling alright?
>>
>>12420891
its similar to the new 3ds but it got way more exclusive games than the n3ds got.
Not really a successor, 1.5 is pushing it.
More like 1.1

I see it as a successor, had its own exclusive titles, color, better hardware... perhaps a mediocre upgrade after almost a decade, but still an upgrade with its own titles.
>>
>>12421170
>better hardware
arguable. Color games couldnt even continue music on a screen change when og games could.
>>
>>12420891
I would say so. No one was making real handheld game consoles before Gameboy came around all affordable with a fucking digital clock screen. The gameboy color has a real honest to god display for video content. It's definitely a unique case but I think that makes it something from the future compared to the original.

What the fuck are you talking about...
>>
Its the dsi / n3ds of game boy

At the time I saw it as a new model of Gameboy, rather than a 'new console' as such, but I mostly played GB games on SGB so I probably didn't see it as being as much of an upgrade as someone who went DMG -> SGB
Hopefully that answers your question, anon
>>
>>12420891
>>12421586
>DMG -> SGB
DMG -> GBC* I'm dumb
>>
>>12421586
From my experience, not many people went from DMG to GBC. Most kids I knew had the Pocket by the time the GBC came out; some of them upgraded to GBC not long after, but there were also a good chunk of parents who refused to get the Color because they just bought their kids a new Game Boy (Pocket).

>Was the Game Boy Color a full generational leap from the Game Boy?
It was a decent hardware upgrade, but that's hardly enough to be a generational leap.

Aside from the obvious color stuff:
>2x CPU speed
>4x RAM
>2x VRAM
>GDMA and HDMA for copying data into VRAM extremely fast
>Ability to mirror background tiles
>Full control over which order sprites are drawn in
>Infrared port for wireless communication
>>
>>12421186
This isn't a hardware limitation. It's caused by shitty programming. Tons of GB and GBC games alike have the music either stop or slow down during screen transitions because the developers were retarded.
>>
>>12421713
>>Infrared port for wireless communication
Reminded me of all the nights playing Pokemon GS with friends trading mystery gifts
>>
>>12420891
Full generational leap. Games like SMB Deluxe would never be possible on original Game Boy.
>>
GameBoy and GameBoy color are 2 different console

Nintendo counting both hardware sales for the GameBoy is one of the most pathetic cope i have ever seen

They couldn't stand the PS1 being the best selling console ever at the time
>>
i see it like the sega cd or the pce-cd. it's more an upgrade than a new consolle.
>>
>>12420891
It was a leap with backwards capability
>>
>>12421681
>GB Pocket
It was crazy how many people got the Pocket instead of GBC, and it was specifically for Pokemon at the time. I never personally played any GBC games until the GBA came out, I got Castlevania: CotM along with Resident Evil Gaiden and Lufia: The Legend Returns.
>>
>>12420891
1.5, it had very similar base hardware.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo.

>gbc was backwards compatible with og gb games
>some retard autist with nintendo derangement syndrome : "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU CAN'T COUNT THEM TOGETHER BECAUSE...BECAUSE YOU JUST CAN'T!"
>>
>>12425294
the playstation, playstation 2, and playstation 3 are all the same console because of backwards compatibility
>>
>>12420891
gbc is a different generation even if technically is a supped up gb.
same as gc->wii.
>>
>>12425297
Nta, and I disagree with his point that being backwards compatible alone qualifies linking them together, but it’s also not comparable to PS2 and PS3. Those achieved backwards compatibility by including components solely to play games from older consoles. GBC uses the same CPU as the original Game Boy, as well as the same sound hardware and basic graphic chip; it’s compatible with Game Boy games by default.

Anyway, the GBC was never meant to be a thing, but the GBA was taking longer than expected, and they needed to slap something together really quick to compete with the WonderSwan and Neo Geo Pocket.
>>
>>12425325
the same logic applies to master system and genesis, or GBA and DS (and by extension 3DS), or gamecube and Wii and also Wii U.
>>
>>12420891
Despite being rushed out to offer a stop gap against wonderswan and gunpei yokoi, it is objectively a next generation handheld. Every metric from performance to features to time between hardware releases, it's next generation.

Even if it had no games.
>>
>>12421186
What are some games where the music starts over every screen? Gbc was my first console and I vaguely recall this happening in some games but I can't recall which ones.
>>
Nintendo's timing with all the gameboy systems was fucking bizarre. The original was practically dead by 1995 but they prolonged it because pokemon ended up being a phenomenon that led to them dragging out the GB's lifespan far beyond when it should've been replaced. And then with GBC that thing was barely even an upgrade at all, and only lasted on the market for what like 2 years? And then GBA was finally a decent power level and on the market for more like 4 years or so before the DS came out, but even that was damn short.

The GBA is what the GBC should've been in 1998
>>
>>12425346
The Mega Drive being able to play Master System games is not comparable to GBC at all. It requires an add on, and Mega Drive games use completely different hardware. Don’t know or care about DS and Wii because not retro.

Talking /vr/, the closest comparison to GB/GBC would be the SG-1000 and Master System. The Master System contains the same CPU as the SG-1000, among others, but has 8 times the RAM and an upgraded graphics chip. Also uses the same sound hardware (Except for some later, Japan exclusive releases).
>>
GBC was a pretty remarkable upgrade but a lot of GBC games were still just designed like GB games and didn't really feel any different apart from having more colors. If all you played was like Wario Land 3 or Zelda Oracles or Pokemon Crystal I don't think you'd really notice much of a difference. You really had to play shit like Perfect Dark or Worms or even those Harry Potter RPGs to really go "yeah this game would never work on a brick gameboy". I could probably think of better examples for GBC games that actually make good use of the new hardware but whatever.

Wario Land 3 and other cool shit mattered
