Ok I've got an esoteric question about Metal Slug and I'm not even sure you can answer this since it's very specific.
The Metal Slug franchise has had many console ports and one thing that is attractive about these ports is that sometimes they contain Combat School. This is the original arcade game but with a Time Trial mode (beat the game under a certain time) or a Survival mode (beat the game with only 1 life but it's not the same as a 1cc because there are no tanks and weapons have infinite ammo). I was playing Survival recently for Metal Slug 1 (I was playing it on the NeoGeo CD but it's also on PlayStation). I noticed that on Stage 3 there is a cat on the very top of this building but on the arcade machine there was never a cat there. This cat appears in other parts of the game and you can collect it for extra points. Is there any way to get up there? Or is this just the devs trying to be funny by placing this cat in a spot that is impossible to reach? Is this question too specific to ever be answered?

What the fuck does that even mean? What useful information could I possibly obtain from a video game from 1996? Also interesting side note: Metal Slug 1 takes place between 2026-2028. That's how far we've come. The games of your childhood were set in the distant future and it's today. That's how old you are now. Let that sink in.

disregard him, a lot of anons here have schizophrenia and argue aloud with the boogeymen in their head.
in his world, you're an ai/youtuber trying to steal everybody's cool facts for content. perhaps he'd rather take his obscure vidya knowledge to the grave. one begs the question why he even comes here, if he doesn't want to contribute to conversations...

The actual AI/bot doing everything xer can to try and deflect is hilarious. Janitors should ban these types of useless off topic retards at every chance they can.

Entirely possible it is an off value and it is meant to be on the tank below. Or it just looks cool up there.

Probably just a joke by the porting devs and not meant to be picked up by the player.
I have a cat that looks just like that and it used to like to sleep on rooftops just like that. Maybe the dev had such a cat too and wanted to include it in the game as an in joke to impress his gf or something. Your theory is as good as mine.

OP here. I actually found another place where the NeoGeo CD version has an extra collectible where the arcade version doesn't. Early in Mission 5 you can actually collect the prisoner's boxers. I found at least 2 different places. Once they're just on the floor on your path and another one flies off in the breeze from one of the windows if you destroy it. I would post screenshots but I'm kind of tired. I will post tomorrow if this is still up.

Holy shit, I've been thinking that flying trousers in mission 5 are my false memory sort of like mandella effect thing. Turns out it does exist in the CD version.
Also, so much detail is cut from the background graphics in this pic >>12421365. Some is barely noticeable. I remember mirrored cliffs in the Allen O'Neill boss fight, they were different in the cartridge version.

Here is proof that these boxers exist.
Some interesting notes: Sometimes they spawn right in the beginning of Mission 5 and sometimes you have to go down a few houses before you can see them. There seems to always be at least 2 in this stage. When you destroy the windows they fly way in the breeze. If you are fast enough you can jump and grab them while they are flying away. It is also possible to collect them without destroying the window. I've seen them on the ground before, but I can't figure out how to do make them drop down to the floor. I tried shooting them while they fly away and that doesn't seem to work. There are a lot of pots that spawn inside the windows as well that are not present in the original arcade version. I think those exist in the original arcade game, but I can't remember. The boxers definitely don't.

Nobody in the entire world actually owned a Neo Geo CD so you probably saw these in the PlayStation port. Do you remember there being loading screens inside each mission? That's the main reason why it's better to play this game on the Neo Geo CD vs the Playstation. Also if I remember correctly the flamethrower looks really bad on the PS1 port too. Or maybe that was Metal Slug 2?

Holy shit you're right. The boss fight has different cliffs. And you're right about the background too. In the picture with the sleeping cat, I never noticed the tree in the background has snow on it and in the arcade version it doesn't. It is almost always the case that the original arcade game is better than the ports, but it seems like this is an exception to the rule. I guess when they released the Neo Geo CD they tried to improve the games that were on the Neo Geo that were identical to the arcade so this is why it's better? This might be the definitive way to play Metal Slug 1, sorry MS Anthology.

I only played the cartridge version through. I tried CD versions but only first 1-3 missons. Maybe there is some esoteric way to make the boxers spawn in the cartridge version? Like that UFO at mission 3.

Dude, it's one additional tree versus a whole lot of lost detail. Look at the copypasted bullet holes on the wall above the tank and the lack of tread marks on the ground. Arcade version is clearly superior.
