Its one of the worst RPGs I have ever played. Theres a very scary PS3 defender on this board so im getting out of this thread before he shows up and walls of texts me about how amazing and special the completely identical towns and empty biomes are.

Cool concept but pretty flawed and jank
I like how the story is a sort of downbeat and dark like Phantasy Star 2. 4 went too much in the shonen adventure direction instead of gloomy sci-fi

They rushed the piss out of it and it's very evident. It's very unpleasant to play or even watch.

I gave it a fair chance after beating 2. Played it a few hours, long enough to recruit Wren. I didn't like it at all. It's just so completely dull and uninspired. Every town looks exactly the same, the combat is a slog and the story feels so disconnected from the rest of the series. I just gave up and started playing 4 instead and had a way better time. I would absolutely recommend skipping 3 to anyone who asks. The Genesis isn't exactly loaded with JRPGs but I would rather play anything else, including Sword of Vermillion than touch Phantasy Star 3 again

Definitely the worst game in the genesis quadrilogy but I had an ok time playing through it for one of the four family routes. Can't recommend it for anyone that isn't already super invested in Phantasy Star. I really wish it wasn't rushed, it had a lot of potential and despite what little the characters had ingame, I quite like them.

>genesis quadrilogy
I thought only three of them were on Genesis?

1 got ported to the genesis but I wouldnt call it a quadrilogy

They were, I just refer to it as either the genesis or classic quadrilogy. Also you could play it on the Genesis through the power base converter.

It's a shame that no other game has attempted the generational torch following your waifu choice aspect, it's an interesting concept.

I can't find that one video/song cover of the PSIII opening song where that girl is singing about wanting "the zelda console" but her dad buys her a mega drive instead. She's sad at first but ends up liking it anyways. It's really old now, I should have saved it when I had the chance.

Pros: Cool setting. Good music. Nice looking artstyle. Some fun ideas with the generations system. Multiple endings. No need to grind. Hottest waifus in the series.

Cons: Severe lack of art assets and animations. Not enough dialogue to make the story or characters interesting. Too easy.

Saga Frontier 2 and several of the Fire Emblem games did this. This was the first to my knowledge though.

It's not great, but I don't think it's as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

Said it best. Lots of cool ideas, but even more fumbles. Worth at least playing one bloodline if you're going through the whole series.

SaGa Frontier 2 and Romancing SaGa 2 both do that. Also Dragon Quest V although it's not fully generational.

not retro

Technically it's not even a port, it's just Phantasy Star from the Mark III in a Mega Drive cartridge shell with the proper connector.

It's not good but it has an extra bad reputation because the other Phantasy Star games are excellent.

1>2>4>3 for me. Idk why but 4 just doesn't click with me like it does for most. Still a great no doubt, but I enjoy 1 and 2 much more.
