I thought this was cool for like a month but honestly I think it makes old consoles look like cheap Ali express slop now. I think the anti retrobrite schizo propaganda + millennial ocd is to blame. Only exception is Gameboy, but that always had wacky transparent colours.

I don't think there will be an alternative in the future
a lot of my stuff is already falling apart. though I don't really take good care of it, to be honest
I'm looking forward to 3d printing becoming good enough that I can just print these at home

Most of them are hideous and of terrible quality. The only time they're acceptable is if the original case is beyond salvaging, but even then I'd try to find a dead donor console with a case that was in decent condition before purchasing one of these things.

I wish they came in other flavors other than transparent/transparent but with color.

This. Black with White text is kino.

There's reasons to buy aftermarket shells, like specifically SFC shells make sense if you want to play USA SNES games on your console since otherwise you'll either need a cartridge adapter or you'll need to take off the top half anyways. It's a hell of a lot more work to play US games on SFC than the other way around.
Gamecube is another one where aftermarket shells make sense, to accommodate larger DVDs. PS2 swaptops used to be necessary but these days have been entirely obsoleted by softmods. You could also count Neo Geo MVS consolizers as a form of an aftermarket shell.
But there's also plenty of shells that really don't provide any new functionality like PS1 and N64 shells, and they mostly end up serving as repair parts for old crumbling or otherwise terrible condition original plastics.

N64 shells is good business. Last I checked (which admittedly was a year ago) they were selling for more than a base system on eBay. Wild

It annoys me how all the aftermarket shells are some transparent "funtastic" color. I mean, hey, if that's what you want then that's fine. But there's seemingly NEVER options for aftermarket shells of the same beige/gray/black/whatever color of the original. If I would personally get a replacement shell, it's because the original is damaged or heavily yellowed or something. I want an actual replacement that looks like an original, not some rainbow bullshit. But there are no options for that

The only decent shells I've ever seen have been for Game Boys. Everything else is transparent rainbow shit ONLY

I bought a functioning SNES with a crumbled shell for cheap.
I'd like to find a nice replacement shell someday.
>>
i get them just to keep the original shells in good shape. can be found cheap enough on aliexpress

>Still nothing for SNES Jr.

They are useful if the original shell is damaged and that's their main purpose, imho. Or if you're that much paranoid about old plastic just starting to fall apart soon.

the translucent colored ones are a late 90s-early 00's aesthetic. like N64 fantastic series and the colored iMac's

My model 1 genesis is beat the fuck up and I wish I could get a replacement shell for it that just looked normal instead of being transparent for no reason.

Just buy a non-working one that looks clean and swap the cases

A lot of injection molded environmentally damaging plastic does originate from China. It is still very cool and a fine way to repair cosmetically damaged systems.
