I respect Mei as a character, the writers for including this selection of proverbs, and the authors who originated them.
I have no doubt her inclusion in the fiction had influence over my mind during my own real development.

It's crazy that in the original Japanese she only gives you Chinese proverbs while in the English translation she gives similar Western quotes like from Shakespeare.
Kojima wanted her personality to be "Chinese enthusiast" rather than "learned and surprisingly well-traveled in her studies for her age." Strange...

What does she say instead just repeats or more different proverbs?
I'm curious what's different between the regions.

Since her parents are Chinese but she's American I thought it was a really cool balance, to say the same conclusion twice but sourced from 2 different eras and peoples is kind of cool in its own right. I felt the same way when comparing Roman journals and the Tao Te Ching. The later of which Mei quotes more than once I think.

Japanese Mei Ling more frequently reminds you that you're playing vidya during her kotowaza/kakugen dumps, which is largely scrubbed from the Blaustein translation, replaced with things like "the mission".
>JA:「一心は二用する能わず」って聞いた事ある? 一つしかない心を同時に2箇所に使うことはできないっていう意味よ。 あなたは何か他のことしながらゲームしたりしないでよね?
>TL: Ever hear the saying "Isshin ha ni you suru atawazu"? It means your one mind can't be in two places at once. Don't game or what have you while doing something else, OK?
>EN Official: There's a Chinese proverb: "The mind cannot be in two places at once." Make sure that you're not thinking of something else during the mission, okay?
>JA:「泳ぎの上手な人こそ、かえって油断して溺れてしまう」っていう例えよ。そろそろゲームにも慣れたでしょうけど、油断はしないでね。
>TL: They say that it is the strong swimmer who gets careless and drowns. Maybe you're used to the game by now, but don't get careless, all right?
>EN Official: The Chinese say "It is the strong swimmer who most often drowns." It is because the strong swimmer overestimates his abilities and underestimates the strength of the river. You are probably quite used to the mission now, but don't get careless.
>JA:「小心に大過なし」っていう諺があるわ。慎重にやれば、大きな間違いをすることはないって意味よ。ゲームになれてきても、絶対に慎重さは忘れ ないでね。
>TL: There's a saying that goes "Shoushin ni taika nashi". It means that you won't make big mistakes if you act with caution. No matter how used to the game you are, you mustn't forget to be careful, all right?
>EN Official: (Probably replaced wholesale, I can't think of nor find a corresponding line)

Canada has MAID
so if you are really blue
go to great white north
nah dont do that. but really you'll just be happier if you accept that its the SEGA MASTER SYSTEM. and that it didnt have very many good games. Only maybe Phantasy Star.
So just move on to a better system. Genesis was legendary, get obsessed with that. It also has fake name, except Mega Drive was its UK & European market name.

They replaced some Chinese sayings with Western ones but left some that weren't too weird in and just translated them to English. And yeah it's weird how it's only thanks to Jeremy Blaustein that Mei Ling went from being a Chinese American obsessed with Chinese culture to becoming a Chinese American trying to bridge both cultures and traditions with common understanding and wisdom... considering I thought that was the entire point of her character existing.

this fits so well for MGS and many of the major characters, thank you localization! i bet Kojima and his staff would've used fitting quotes from outside China if they weren't focused on simply giving this part-Chinese woman as many Chinese sayings as possible just because she's Chinese.

The best part? It's in MGS2 during the codec call you get where Mei Ling actually appears.

no idea about anything here but is Sons of Liberty an awesome game? Never even really played MGS other than a few minutes on PSX. but I heard it has some legendary plot with AI gov't overlords. I dont think sneaking is super fun though. or failing the mission if someone sees you.

I think the games work a lot better with game over on discovery, I hate having to hide when I get caught. I don't think there's ever been a game that really blended stealth and action well.

Really forgivable. It's not like they cut all the meta stuff or something.

im older than you homo. I never was interested in metal gear solid because sneaking around is gay instead of shooting stuff.
I remember when my uncle sold his genesis (I got NHL 94 and mortal kombat) and the only game he had that wasn't hockey or dirt biking was Metal Gear Solid.

In the original MGS, Mei Ling has this save Codec conversation:
>"Snake, in China they say "When walking through a melon patch, don't adjust your sandals." That means that when things get really bad, you have to try and remember what's important. Keep things in the proper perspective, okay?"
I always thought the explanation got changed in Twin Snakes to something along the lines of "Don't cause unnecessary suspicion." because the act of adjusting you sandals would look like you're trying to steal a melon, but it's exactly the same in both games. To me, the message of "try and remember what's important" bit doesn't make sense at all.
Am I just misremembering this? I played through Twin Snakes last year, and know I heard the original melon patch quote. I played through the NTSC version, while when I was younger I always played through in PAL.

Because she’s supposed to be Chinese-American, not full Chinese so the Twin Snakes remake and later games including her cameo in Brawl fixed it.
The Chinese accent in the original PSX game was charming but made her sound too old, the American voice is cuter.

After MGS2 Kojima wanted pure, direct translations of his retarded stories without any improvements by actual writers so localisations were handled internally. That's why TTS, 3 and don't have accents and dialogue is horrible.

No, I'm not talking about Japanese culture, I'm talking about their poetry culture specifically. Haiku were a social activity in a lot of circumstances, where people would write them jointly. It's hard to explain since I'm assuming you don't know much about the actual structure of a haiku beyond the mora count (which is fair, why would you). What specifically do you find stupid about them?
>>
>>12429217
Yeah? And I, as a native English speaker, find iambic pentameter to be utter nonsense that has no real definition since the "rule" of having 5 beats (10 syllables) is more like a loose guideline no one cares about and you instead wind up with people writing whatever with any arbitrary syllable count and rhythm and going "uhh yeah bro this is iambic pentameter trust me bro".
