I've never beat a sonic game outside of sonic adventure 1&2. I've tried the original iirc and the casino area bothers me. Something about sonic level design is too open for a platformer imo. When I play it, it feels like there's too many areas to go and the movement is too fast to really enjoy whats going on. Not that too many areas is a bad thing, but when it comes to a timed platformer, it can be a bit much. Idk if the graveyard world or casino one is further in the game, but either one is the farthest I've ever gotten in one.

You go left to right, as fast as possible, then hit the boss until you win. That's it.
The alternate routes/areas are for replayability, which is super fucking nice to have when it's 1994 and you don't have 50 years of games at your disposal for pennies.
