Tekken doesn't deserve its attention. On pretty much every metric it's below something else in the genre.

Nah, at its best it has a unique flavour that isn't made redundant by other games. There's a specific itch I scratch when playing like a cracked out jin/devil jin wavedash kbd electric whiff punish sweatlord, even though I greatly prefer playing virtua fighter.
The vibe of tekken 3 and 4 can't be beat either. Tekken 4 with a mod to remove the kbd limitation would be kino.

Honestly, there was no better 3D fighter on consoles at the time of Tekken 3 release in 1998 and even if we include 2D fighters in this discussion, only SFA3 and KoF98 were comparable but they were way more niche.
Tekken 4 era - yeah, we had DoA3, VF4 and Soul Calibur 2 around the same time and T4 itself was undercooked but it was still a good game.

Or arcade.
Tekken 3 made Virtua Fighter 3 and Fighting Vipers 2 seem antiquated. The Midway shit like Mace the Dark Age and War Gods felt like it was made a decade before Tekken 3.
The only thing that held a candle to it was Soul Calibur, another Namco game. Tekken 3 was a huge technical leap forward, both visually and for gameplay, way ahead of its time.

VF3 had 3D arenas and advanced texturing/filrering/reflection effects, to be fair.
But the animations were outdated, and the game wasn't avaliable anywhere except in select arcades until the crappy DC port.

Absolutely retarded normalfaggot take. Literally everything about Soulcalibur is better and more unique than Tekken, from the actual 17th century Age of Exploration setting to the wild cast of characters from around the world to the actual presentation and mechanics. Even its single player modes mogged Tekken.
Tekken isn't bad, but you literally have the taste of a woman or a retard if you think Tekken is better than SC.

I only care about Virtua Fighter and I only care about Virtua Fighter 5.

I'm pretty sure ppl didn't wear generic korean mmo outfits during the actual 17th century.
SC charactets are good cosplay or rule34 material but other than that they are completely forgettable.

Not sure how it's dumbed down. They got rid of MTE which was mostly an execution gate and added sideturn stuff which I think adds a lot of mechanical depth and engages the brain more. The current throw break system has just as many mind games as MTE, just less execution.

As far as weapons based fighters go, I prefer Samurai Shodown

Imo 90s 3D fighters were peak in general. From VF2, VF3, Tekken 2 and Tekken 3, to Tobal games, Ehrgeiz, SF EX, Soul Edge, Fighting Vipers, Samurai Spirits 64, Evil Zone, Fighter's Destiny, Psychic Force, Zero Divide, Bushido Blade, Critical Blow.
In 2000s everything just condenced to comp scene faggotry and the next Tekken, DoA and SC game which were not bad but not that much better than their prequels made in the 90s really, while other series died off.

Weird cope, but whatever.

They're more memorable than any Tekken character out there. Literally half of the Tekken characters look like generic angry Japanese bodybuilders that belong in the Yakuza games. Only the chicks like Asuka, Lilli, Michelle/Julia, etc and the joke characters look unique meanwhile at a glance you can tell the difference between Rafael, Yun Seong, Rock, Li Long, Maxi etc.
The only exception is the cast of SC5, they were literally just younger generation copies of the older characters.

That's basically what you admitted yourself when you said all the SC characters wear generic koream mmo outifts. It's your choice so whatever. Stop pretending you know anything about a series you know nothing about.

oh im not the guy that you've been arguing with. i just jumped in when i noticed that you outed yourself as having no argument.
personally, i can only remember a handful of sc characters. here, i'll tell you who and why:
voldo: for obvious silly reasons. he stands out very unique, basically a joke character
sigfried/nightmare: because of the massive sword
sophitia: because her name was stupid, and she looked like a valkyrie.
ivy: sex
astaroth: because an axe is very different from a sword. always made me think of frankenstein for some reason though, maybe in the "large and lumbering" way.
raphael: because traditional fencing
there was also a spear boy and a spear girl.
and without looking anything else up, thats it. nothing else really stood out to me. not their looks, nor their moves. meanwhile in tekken, actual martial arts are represented, as well as memorable characters
law is bruce lee
lei is jackie chan and chinese animal form kung fu
bryan is a murderous psychopath
king is a wrestler with a fucking jaguar head
jack is a hulking robot
hwoarang and baek are tae kwon do
bruce is muay thai
steve is boxing (and roger was a goofy boxing kangaroo)
mokujin was the formless traditional training dummy
nina and anna are femme fatale sisters using aikido and cqc stuff
yoshimitsu has a sword, crazy looks, weird stances and fighting style. just remembering now that he's in sc, but wildly watered down and dull in comparison
eddy is capoeira
kuma is a fucking BEAR
paul had the tall hair and everyone remembers deathfist.
ganryu for sumo
and thats completely disregarding any of the actual stories, cutscenes, or personalities. theres a lot to latch on to and remember. sc hardly anything in comparison. and looking back up through your argument with the other guy, yeah im inclined to agree that most of the characters look like generic korean mmo characters: all superficial flare, no depth or actual connection.
