>the series that pretty much invented the RPG and develoepd the concepts of morality and consequence in roleplaying decided that this would be the ultimate villain of the humanity across the multiverse

The guardian did taunt me through the CRT monitor which was unnecessary and foolish as his plans would probably have earlier success as I would have had no idea of his existence and plans. However, a cosmic being known as the Time Lord with what little remaining strength available created a portal to the universe to start the quest to defeat The Guardian. I've played through 4 games without ever destroying the Guardian. In 7, it was only to prevent his initial arrival to Britannia. Underworld 2 was to release Lord British's castle and other important people of Britania from the blackrock containment sphere. Serpent Isle was to stop their "plan B" even though armageddon was already underway. Finally, in 8, I was just hoping the next leap was the leap home or at least back to a good safe place. For a villain in an RPG series, it's kind of interesting he was never truly defeated, but rather winning despite the setbacks the player incurred onto him.

He was taking a pretty big risk sticking his head through the computer and just sitting there like I couldn't give him a little kiss on his nose while he was talking about whatever the fuck he felt was so important that he had to interrupt my busy day of doing nothing on the computer.

Play U9 or just read the cancelled Bob script.

I honestly love the meta-narrative content of the Ultima series, where (You) sitting at the computer are literally meant to be this character you are controlling. The Guardian talking directly to (You) while the game happens around him is also very cool.

Ultima 7 is just boomer skyrim, it's closer to a point and click adventure game than an rpg and it's influence is completely overblown. Like with most rpgs people are nostalgic for the idea of the game, not the game itself. People act like npc schedules and being able to pick garbage up off the floor and put it in your inventory is revolutionary, but that's pretty obviously just bethesda dogshit. I think this genre appeals more to people who like to write essays on games than play games.

I'm gonna side with Gabe Newell on this issue and say that interactivity with a responsive world is the definition of "fun" in a video game. It doesn't have to be as extreme as something like Ultima 7, it can just be the fact that your actions on a previous level led to enemies spray painting taunts on the walls ahead of you or different objects making different noises (or even breaking apart differently) when hit with a crowbar.
