sephiroth is fully dead and gone after the reactor incident and is just a hollow vessel for jenova afterwards. not fully confirmed in the game but how I interpret it.

Sephiroth had already gone insane before the story began, Cloud already developed PTSD, and Hojo was always insane.

Cloud kills Sephiroth and flings his body into the lifestream, before the game even starts. His "spirit is so strong" or something that the lifestream recyystallizes his life essence. When you get to the end of the "whirlwind maze" and Cloud puts the black materia into the mako crystal with dead Sephiroth in it it revives him. From that point it's the revived real Sephiroth.

That'd be cool. If you do the sidequest to get Vincent's ultimate weapon you have to go through a sequence where Lucrecia and Vincent are a couple then JoJo comes in and whisks her away and Vincent is crying like a little cuck on screen. Then Hojo and Lucrecia give birth to Sephiroth so Vincent sees Sephiroth as the manifestation of his lost love. A Hojo tale would have a lot to work with.
