Best Healer to play in the series and also has the cutest voice

I'm playing through Vesperia for the first time right now, and I just got the arena city. I've tried the other characters, but so far the only character that is fun to play is Yuri, the rest feel incredibly janky (especially trying to hit things with Raven's bow). Am I just retarded?

>Am I just retarded
Like a little bit? Yuri's definitely the easiest to just go and jump in with. Aside from Rita I guess but like, she's almost a pure caster, she's probably the most boring out of the playable ones. Every character gets better over time as they get more stuff unlocked, but pretty much all of them are workable from the get-go, they just get better.
I could see Raven taking a little bit to pick up, but he's honestly a lot less messy than other archers in the series (Woodrow/Natalia etc.)he is also the best healer you get. Karol I will admit is rough right at the beginning, but depending on your level you should be around the point in the game where he gets some of his really good arts that make him funReaper Knock and whatever the Spider Web's Called, so it could be a good time to try messing around with him. You can play Judith on the ground to start figuring her out, and that's serviceable if not amazing - just know that she gets exponentially better as you get more skills that let you do more nonsense in the air. For Estelle I recommend (when playing her directly) thinking of her less as a caster and more as a tanky melee. She can make herself very hard to kill/disrupt and you can go to town on enemies with her directly.
You don't have Patty right at this moment iirc, but you presumably got a taste of her on the ghost ship. Patty's a delight to play, would highly recommend when she's in your party again.
Repede is good at this point, if you want to try branching out he's going to be the most similar to Yuri, and that might be the easiest to go move to.
I'm highly on the side of playing through Tales games as all the different characters instead of just picking one. I think it makes the games a lot more fun and it's where a lot of the depth is - Vesperia's on the better side of things because all the characters feel different from each other, and all of them are pretty fun once you get them going.

you don't need a special item to play as other characters, it's for switching characters mid-battle. Abyss has the same thing, and you get it around the same length into each game.
And the map character is almost entirely cosmetic(there's one bit where you have to be judith for an event to happen when you're trying to get into Myorzo but I think that's it). This one you get automatically too.
>>
>>3902352
>it's for switching characters mid-battle. Abyss has the same thing, and you get it around the same length into each game.
Which is still annoying.
>And the map character is almost entirely cosmetic
It's not cosmetic it's immersive. Being able to play as whomever you want onscreen adds to the immersion. In either instance it's just a step of annoyance that exists purely for it's own sake.

>>
>>3902250
No, Team Symphonia games have trash gameplay. Destiny R and Rebirth are two of the early games where most characters are fun to play. Otherwise, they mage characters only are fun from Graces/Xillia forward.

I agree on the immersive angle and do think being able to move around the world as different characters (and seeing NPCs react differently depending on who you are) is important, but I then also like the way Abyss and Vesperia did it where you have to work a bit for the privilege. It's simple enough in both games that only speedrunners are gonna get punished for the next 80 hours, while for everyone else it's gonna be a neat treat and weird little way to do things which is part of the appeal.

it shouldn't be treated as a privilege. It should be something that makes you want to play the game more and when most of the rest of the series will allow with with a menu option out the gate doing it this way is just bizarre for no reason.

Every character in Vesperia was insufferable except Yuri. Estelle would be the worst if it wasn't for "I'm always angry at everything because I'm a stupid fatherless dyke"
Vesperia has to be the most overrated game in the franchise.
>>
>>3903257
It has a lot of content and looks good, and you know that matters a lot to videogames. Otherwise, yeah, Vesperia's story and most of its characters (especially the villains) are among the worst in the series.
Yuri carries the game hard. Judith is cool, tho.

Eh, same as Cless Alvein and Cress Albane. Second is wrong and sounds awful despite appearing in official localizations (Tales has inconsistent translations anyway, like Amber Hearts in Graces and Kohaku in Hearts R). And so is "Iria".

It rewards you for playing the game. If anything it makes you play more.
Like man, people dislike how much is locked behind progress in Vesperia, but inversely it rewards progress like no other Tales. But at the time people were used to not being able to do much at the beginning. These days it seems like newcomers expect to be able to do all kinds of cool stuff from the getgo.

Playing through Tales of Graces F right now.
Just got to Ghardia Shaft.
Is this place supposed to be kicking my ass this hard? Every battle at least one party member will die, but I'm also getting like 12k exp per battle.
My only guesses are to grind and massively upgrade my gear but it seems such an odd spike in difficulty.

Figured to try a shot asking here: what's the best way to play Tales of Phantasia Ps1 English patch that minimizes the freezing with spells? Playing it on a modded vita but thag still causes that and I'm reading the patch version's not even compatible with POPStarter for the Ps2. Lest to burn it into disc and try that, want to try playing it handheld before I go emulator route.

Nope, game let's you string four attacks/Artes together, and if you want to continue stringing Artes with the same character, you either use armatization or one the character needs a stack 4 Skill (Ekseed).
Even with those two, you still need SC to keep attacking, tho.
>>
>>3907547
Destiny 2 did a good job with giving characters SP & TP regen stats that could be buffed with equips and titles. It was the first game to deviate from the classic TP system, and it's unique in how it pushes a hybrid playstyle where melee characters can back up and cast spells when they run out of SP and vice versa.
I'd like to say just CC with no TP is best, but it also feels very wrong for a Tales game to not have orange gels. TP-recovery cooking recipes also help to make cooking feel more essential.
>>
>>
>>3908233
the more expensive ones (altered / arcane) only need 100, and like, it's pretty simple to just go pop a bunch of them in one fight, eat food / throw up a tent and be done quick.
And to be fair, this is only if you want to specifically grind them out the moment you get them. You're going to get them just from normal play. (if you're aware of it, you can have the AI judith set to only use artes that you want more usages in and then she'll just build them up for you while you're playing other characters).
>>3908139
You're missing mechanics. For example, you can do a chain blast to restart your combo, and you don't need armatization or exceed for that.
You can also spell cancel for seraph/armatization characters.

It's got problems, though its probably more hated than it actually deserves. It's still perfectly playable (I like it more than it's prequel - and though I'm unlikely to play either again I'd much rather do Zesteria than Berseria again). The story feels half-baked (because it was), a good chunk of the dungeons are very similar and uninteresting (but not all of them - there's a couple actually good ones which is rare in more modern tales), the camera is notoriously not great which can get in the way during combat, and the item/skills system is - while actually pretty interesting and has a lot of depth in it - 1 extremely obtuse, 2 not necessary to engage with beyond the surface level on a normal difficulty level, and 3 requires a bit of grinding on the higher end of things thanks to the sub-system that controls item drops.
>>3912829
I think Mikleo is actually a pretty good character. Sorey (and moreso how the world of the game itself treats Sorey) kinda annoys me. Mikleo, Lailah, and Edna are all respectable enjoyable characters tho.

Not in multiplayer where the camera issues become a thousand times worse. Not having separate battle screens is retarded for the series as Zestiria has shown. But it still has a bunch of issues aside from that.

>respectable enjoyable characters
I never spoke about characters. I like mikleo and my dick likes him too. The game is bad because it's so fucking unnecessary long, there are too much "and then nothing happened for hours" the combat system is AWFUL and generally the story is not that good on a narrative term. Specifically by the people who played the original, and because of the unnecessary story and character related changes like Rody or that talking wardrobe.
The rest seems to be nothing but improvements.
Better battle system, more content than the original, pretty well made visually as a 2D game.

I can't believe this day has finally come and I'm alive.
So, what iso do you apply this patch to?
Wasn't ToPX distributed as a collection type with NDX?
I remember that the one time I tried ToPX it had a menu to pick the game and such.
Is that a valid file, or?
>>
>>3919178
>Wasn't ToPX distributed as a collection type with NDX?
ToPX is different because Namco is stupid and confusing.
There's Tales of Phantasia CROSS which is what this is for; no Rondline.
And then there's the Tales of Phantasia (X) add-on in the NDX game which shoehorns Rondoline in there.
>>
Just in time for me beating the PSX version. Though that version is way better anyway. Thanks to LBP anyways.
>>3919178

>The text is based on the Phantasian Productions localization and as such we have decided not to
disturb it if we didn't need to out of respect for their work.
That's cool and all, but it's honestly jarring when there's voicelines that clearly don't match the very localized-feeling text desu.
Whatever I guess, I'll have to get used to it.
>>
>>
>>
>>3919217
I don't speak Japanese, but I have ears and enough understanding to know what they say.
You tell me if translating a line that is voiced and is comprised of a simple "Ohisashiburi desu." (Long time no see, It's been a long time, etc.) needs an extra "This is a surprise.", or if a line that is voiced as "Wakatta yo." being turned into "Anything for my little sis."
Again, it's stuff I'll have to get used to, but it's undeniably jarring if you like, listen to what the characters are saying and then read the translated text.
>>3919218
I can't read the text, but like I said, I do have ears to listen to the voicelines, which is what I was talking about.
>>
>>
>>
>>3919221
>>3919223
The "yo" actually conveys tone, so while it does say "I understand", it's different than just saying "I understand." It's a more friendly way of talking. So you either rewrite it or put a TL note (but then you would need TL notes for every line of dialogue), or you leave it dry and then have everyone say "man Japanese sure is a dull language"
>>

Just beat Phantasia PSX last night. It shot up to one of my favorite games in the series. Going back to one of the early versions of LMBS is great. The slower and more positional battle system gives it a very classic feel - you either kill all enemies into one corner or you die getting flanked. I think everyone who gets into Tales should at least play this version. Not to diss ToPX but the sped up battle system doesn't feel as right. With the patch though everyone will go for that unfortunately.
I wish Tales never dropped LMBS or still make 2D games. A bit worried now for the future of the games after Arise and any remake they decide to do.

Oh I've played and beaten D2 years ago as a teen and still remember that wackiness. I remember being surprised how my SP went to half when I go over he enemy's side of the battle line. The more important takeaway from this is that this shows bamco isn't afraid to overlap announcement to release windows.
Abyss remaster likely announced in march/april, release in july/august.
New game announced in june, release in december.
>>
>>
>>3921714
>Someone at Scamco has a hardon for Nintendo right now and I have no clue why
Well, they spent like 20 years having a hard-on for Sony, so it was about time they moved on.
People forget that Sony pretty much destroyed their market in Japan with the PS3 and never truly recovered afterwards. Then again, most third-party developers and publishers over there are dumb as rocks and don't know how to appeal to a mainstream Japanese market.
>>
>>3921878
If you're talking about the famitsu interview, I interpreted that as x2 being further away. He said that there were 2 remasters in the final stages, which we can infer >>3921714 are Berseria and Abyss. X2, which was listed separately, was said to be in progress, not almost done like those 2.
>>
>>3921889
>He said that there were 2 remasters in the final stages
I think you're misremembering. He only said that the next one (Berseria) was close to being announced. The other number he brought up was that there were more than 2 in development. Xillia 2 was brought up by the interviewer specifically and he said it wasn't far enough in development to give details on, which means that it was at least far enough to not outright deny it was happening.

>>

>>3921900
"No less than two" includes 2 and "final stages" is right there in the sentence. I'm assuming verification means play testing which is near the final stage anyway.
Either way, Ludger not being on the anniversary poster likely means X2 won't be released during the anniversary, more likely next year.
>>
>>3921911
> I'm assuming verification means play testing which is near the final stage anyway.
Oh see that's where we're driving in different directions, I thought he was casting a wider net and "verification" was something much earlier. I guess it's kind of vague, depends on what exactly they're verifying.

Symphonia has way too many dad joke names.
A mage who's really smart in school. His name is Genius.
A teacher who's the main healer of the party. Her name if Refill.
A town that gets destroyed. It's called Ruin.
A town full of outcasts. It's called Exile.
The list goes on.

>No, you fucking don't
Yes you fucking do, because those are the two official translations that go hand in hand. If you go with the official Japanese and Phantasian Productions names, it's Cless and Klarth. If you go with the official English names, it's Cress and Claus.
>muh Claus is wrong!
Take it up with the retarded localizers then, and while you're at it show them >>3922756's pic.
>muh Cress is right!
Japan's been using Cless spelled out in the Latin alphabet for 30 years.

>If you go with the official English names, it's Cress and Claus.
You're going with the names from the game that "translated" Ragnarok as Kangaroo... along with the 4-episode OVA that was REQUIRED to maintain the continuity of that shitty GBA localization.

Uhhh because it fits 100%
You get the upswing->downswing motion of the tiger blade, and then it adds lightning to it (usually with the downswing, though interestingly lightning actually starts on the ground and travels upwards in real life - fun fact).
So yeah. Lighting tiger blade

English has multiple ways of saying "I understand" as well. "Gotcha" "Got it", "Understood","Affirmative" "okay", ect, which vary in how formal/casual they are and the context that you use them in. Every language does stuff like this, you'd don't need to go full rewrite mood.

When's the next one? Did they actually lose the source code for some old Tales games like Destiny, Eternia and Legendia which is why those games still don't get remasters?
>>
>>3921723
>>3921884
I hope the new Tales is optimized for Switch first and foremost so they can actually focus on gameplay and contents instead of going for graphics. Arise ended up underwhelming because they prioritized muh graphics over anything else.
Slightly better Berseria graphics is enough, as long as they actually give attention to the art direction.

That localized name comes from Symphonia in which Shuusouraizan is a unison attack activated by Lloyd using Kogahazan. In that sense they're not actually unrelated in that specific game.
The problem is that localized name stuck around even though it makes less sense in other games.
They do share the 斬/"zan" kanji (see also Raihazan and Raijin Souhazan), but that's a weak connection since it also applies to several other unrelated artes.

Genius and refill don’t sound like names - Genis and Raine do.

Claus just is an actual name that sees common use, Klarth… is not. Hence I prefer Klaus

It's also not the actual character's name.
It's either Clarth or Klarth, whichever you prefer.
The spelling gives it away.
(I'm not saying you shouldn't call him Claus if that's what you want, I'm just saying that it's an objectively incorrect translation of the character's name which is "クラース・F・レスター".)

I firmly believe they've lost the source code for any 2D Tales game and any Tales game released before Graces that hasn't been ported since then. This won't change until I'm proven wrong.
Didn't they even say they really have to dig for the source code of some old games cause they've been developed by so many different teams?

Sure, but you'd never translate it as "dude" anyway.
You could translate it as sis.
You could translate it as miss.
You could translate it as lady.
But never as "dude". That is simply incorrect.
(The gnomette was specifically talking to Rody btw.)
>>
>>3933365
Arche teasing literally anyone is very in-character.
Her talking about Rody as if they were friends for the longest time and as if she knew what buttons to push and such when the only single time in which they met was in Venezia during a time in which Arche herself was fully posessed by Rhea (so they didn't even meet, really) is not, however.
Feels like a dev oversight more than anything else. As if they forgot you can backtrack to the cave as soon as you learn the password to enter the deeper parts in Alvanista.
It'd be funny if I came across Rody during the story later on and they introduced themselves to each other for the first time or something like that, lol.
>>
>>3933725
What she's actually saying requires zero prior relationship. Rody was acting desperate, Arche saw that and teased her, Klarth asked Arche why she was teasing her, Arche said it was because it was cute how desperate she was. The translators made a little mistake by having Arche make a general statement about Rody rather than about how she was currently acting.

Brah litterally almost every fantasy tale in a japanese game\anime\manga, not oriental themed, has a tree of life\mana, elementals, a goddess who surveys the world\tree etc and you usually have to gather some spiritual element to go further on the story. Those are called archetypes. I can overlap top to at least three non mainline mt\smt games easily. Even in the last digimon game you have to save a "mana" tree that feed the world, there is a "protector" of this three that is a hot piece of ass and you go around saving "spirits" that allies with you to kill the big bad guy.
Tojo just love this kind of story, that's all.

I'd be interested in some form of re-release of the 2D games, since that would finally mean I can get them here in Euroland, but that's a pipedream at this point. So I'm with you.
Except I'm not even interested in a new game cause I lost faith in the studio. No one working there has any idea how to make a good (Tales) game anymore.

The 7thChord studio don't exist but the CEO is literally in the tales team now and was in charge of the Xillia remaster. A lot of the staff that worked on the R games are all at Bandai in the tales team as well. It makes more sense to think of it as if they got acquired by the Tales team "sorta."
7thChord did stop to exist but they also has a parent company that was in the Kyoto region instead of the Tokyo region and they still exist https://www.accordseven.co.jp/game/They are also listed as having worked on xillia remaster. Some of their staff from Tokyo also moved there.

Probably a typo.
9gb would make more sense.
The bigger question is why would the PS5 version weigh 1gb? There's no way that's right.
Unless the remaster doesn't have upgraded textures for that version of the game and it's literally just a paid update with the few QoL features?

I haven't played that much of the game yet but so far the tales of berseria switch port seems higher quality than xillias which in my opinion sucked. For one it only has an 80.8mb update whereas xillia was like 4.5gb day one and they had to do another update earlier this year that brought it up to 4.7gb total.

My roommate is forcing me through Vesperia while playing shotgun. We just finished Heracles.
Thus far, I got to say it has a lot of promise ruined by a fatal flaw- the movement system just does not work. Locking to a single axis, using the vertical as a jump button, wasting a button to unlock free-roam, has been the bane of my experience. So much wasted movement, feckless running, missing attacks, getting backstabbed and ganged up on, because the characters can't face enemies or change directions smoothly because the game refuses to use a solution that was perfected in OOT.
By the power of grinding and pockets of Life Bottles, I've muddled through, but it hasn't been fun. 2 deaths to Gattuso, 3 to wild encounters, 1 to Barbosa's henchmen, 4 to the assassin gang rape in the alley, and 6 to the god damn tutorial duo. Almost like it wasn't designed for 1 vs mob combat.
Anyways, Karol has been memory-holed, I want a 3some with Rita and Bride Judith.
>>
>>3937862
New to the series?
Tales has been a side-scrolling game since before OoT's z-targeting system existed, and the devs have always been proud of that side-scrolling identity calling it their "linear motion battle system". The newest Tales games eventually made free-running the default form of movement and it feels very wrong to me as a series veteran.
The free-running in Vesperia can be useful but it's a largely unnecessary auxiliary feature. Symphonia works fine without it. Switching your lock-on to a different enemy switches you to a different line to move on, that's all the freedom you need. If you're "missing" attacks you're probably overthinking things, trying to play the game like it's a musou or something.
>>
>>3937862
I can't say I had the same experience, but the camera might be more unwieldly with 2 players instead of 1 and that could be a factor.
>because the game refuses to use a solution that was perfected in OOT
Z-targeting really wouldn't work either, and they didn't have to consider verticality with OOT - Link is either grounded or locked into motion when in the air (falling or jumping in straight lines). A lot of tales games, Vesperia especially, need the air-space.
>Locking to a single axis, using the vertical as a jump button
Have you played a fighting game before? Or any other Tales game? This kind of thing is pretty standard and widespread. I played using keyboard and mouse, and didn't really have any issues with the movement in Vesperia - having a button to hold when you want to free roam, and being able to cycle which target you're in-line with works pretty darn well - and it works better in Vesperia than it does in other similar games like Symphonia / Abyss.
What character are you playing as well I guess - some have tighter movement requirements than others. And I guess there's also the question of what difficulty you're playing at - if you guys are bad at the game you might want to be on Normal instead of anything more complex.
>>
>>3937862
>the game refuses to use a solution that was perfected in OOT.
OoT's system only works for a single player. And then you have to use different 2-3 face buttons plus directional inputs while holding another button for different combo lines as seen in DMC. Tales' system lets you free style a lot more by switching between different attack patterns mid-combo while also having 16 artes to use in basically any combination. Both have pros and cons, but only one of them really lets you implement co-op without a split screen.
>>
>>
>>3937666
Abyss is the obvious answer.
Rebirth was never localized officially (so extra work), and Legendia is nowhere near as popular or well-selling as neither Abyss nor Symphonia.
I hope the no-remaster of Berseria makes it clear that doing the same "paid QoL update rerelease" strategy for Zestiria is a retarded and terrible idea and they just don't fucking do that though.
