There's a threshold of interactivity and character flavoring a game has to pass to be called an rpg. If all you can do is progress down a linear sequence of levels then we might as well start calling super mario an rpg.

No, there isn't. An RPG needs wargame mechanics (tldr: stats and dice) except you're playing as a unit and going on adventures. Nethack qualifies.
In many ways, Roguelikes are one of the more interesting takes on Videogame RPGs. Due to the permadeath+procgen combination, it's the one RPG subgenre where savescumming doesn't completely change the dynamic from its roots.

I wasn't filtered (besides picking the easy class), but I don't have any desire to play it again anytime soon. Maybe someday I'll come back to it and try ascending a Wizard or Caveman.

I'd say easily 5-10 years if you play sparingly, which you would because you'd get ticked off very fast. There's an infinity number of ways to just die for unexplained reasons that would make you reset over and over and over until you realize what the game expected of you in that situation, only to progress slightly further and run into a similar problem again. The castle, by itself, would probably wall you for years.

I would consider Nethack to be considerably easier than ADOM. When Nethack kills you, it's your fault 99% of the time. When ADOM kills you, it's because you've been a dead man walking for the past 100-200 turns, if not more.

Nta but curses (the interface that anon is using) is a piece of shit without line breaks or word wrap so when an item in your inventory has a long title it will just get cut off. You can either decrease the font to make it illegible or make the inventory huge like he did. You spend the majority of the mid and late game staring at your inventory and other pop up menus more than you do at the actual level map so in a weird way it kinda works.
