At first 25 seems like a lot, but you probably made the limit so high so people could get the well known good games on their list and still have plenty of room for the things that show more personal taste.

This would probably change around a bit if I put more thought in to it, or if I used a broader or narrower definition of JRPG.

I hadn't heard of Dark Half, but it sounds kind of interesting. I might give it a try at some point.

I'm impressed that this site is able to show some obscure jarpigs very fast

I feel like I can only get up to 19/25 games, I could fill in the last 6 slots with jrpgs, but not jrpgs that I actually like enough to feel like it matters, like the seven final fantasies I didn't really like that much.
I need to play the mother series, I think I should like at least 2 of those, maybe all 3.
Going by other's 5x5s, maybe giving another chance to Legend of Mana, Dragon Quest games & Breath of Fire games, I dropped them when I last tried them though.
Radiata stories and shadow heart I should probably play too.

I personally dislike listing multiple entries from a franchise, even if I have multiple entries that I love from that franchise. As such, only the first three rows are games that I love. The last two rows are just games that I like. I could have done this with just games that I love by including repeating franchises, but I think that this list better represents the scope of my shitty taste better than a fifth of it being 90s FF.

why does everyone seem to have pokemon on their list. I was honestly disappointed by the series overall as a kid and didn't have time for iv/ev bullshit in college.

finishing the game is easy. When everyone is asking for iv/ev bullshit online when you are trying to get a battle during the fourth gen. I was in college, I had lengthy assignments. I didn't have time to keep track of invisible stats and play games with static sprites.

>why does everyone seem to have pokemon on their list.
I did some tallying and it doesn't seem that over represented in the thread to me.
Series representation:
>Final Fantasy series
45 (38 mainline) appearances
>Megami Tensei umbrella
29 (18 w/o Persona) [I'm counting Metaphor has a Persona Game]
>Dragon Quest series
20 (19 mainline)
>TLoH: Trails series
13 (I'm disappointed in the people who listed tons of these at once in their lists)
>Chrono series
11
>Tales series
11
>Pokemon series
11 (9 mainline)
>Xeno meta series
10
>Breath of Fire series
10 (this placement is actually really surprising to me)
>SaGa series
8
>Mana Series
8
>Disgaea
7 (8 if you count Phantom Brave)
>Mario RPG series (both of them)
7
>"Team Asano" games
7
>Kingdom Hearts
7
>Star Ocean series
7
>Metal Max series
6
>Mother series
5
>Grandia series
5
>Suikoden series
5
>Fire Emblem series
4
>Wild Arms series
4
>Shadow hearts series
4
>Etrian Odyssey series
4
>The World Ends With You series
4
Series with under 4 appearances I'm not listing, because they got beat by the game without a series with the most appearances, The Legend of Dragoon, at 4.

Spamming bubble beam in rock gym/flamethrower in ice gym needs EV/IV? Without fanhacks i already quitted this snorefest series after BW2
People hyping Cynthia to be balls hard when she is just slightly harder in a braindead easy game

nah, nah ,nah.....Back in 07' folks were asking about iv/ev shit before battle online and it was staple of battle revolution. Also it was never about the main game, the real challenge was were the expansions and other players.
Back in 00' you weren't getting through stadium without the missingno glitch. You had to have multiple in game teams bc the shit worth while had crappy movesets in rentals.

bruh, you can't just say that and then be like: "Yes, Inindo is good enough to be on my list", lmao
>Well, I thought the fact that the recruitable NPCs actually moved around the world and had their own goals to be quite novel
Ok, but the game still bad. Play Uncharted Waters or something, come on.

Pokemon is fun because of the large focus on things that are relevant to the core game, but aren’t the core game itself (namely collection and playing against other people) that give incredible value and depth beyond what the main campaign provides. To compare to say (looking at your list and a couple others) Trials of Mana, which also shares traits with Pokemon i.e. very simplistic game to play, having a functional but extremely shallow story/characters (and desu pokemon’s beating it out on that now), ToM simply does not achieve that. And ToM is better than most jrpgs, because it’s designed to be played at least three times! It doesn’t just cut at 40 hours.
And sure there’s social factors outside the game itself that influence it - a huge playerbase, a glut of documentation for those interested in it, more Mods than you could shake a stick at to tailor your preferred experience, Mountains of multimedia material, etc. that add to the experience and attachment too

There were three pilliars in my town drugs/music/sports, once folks turned twelve they dropped the shit altogether to fit in these social niches. All that was left for me was a simple game with static sprites with an expansion where nothing touched.
>) Trials of Mana
>> very simplistic game to play
A classic game brought to the modern era with oldschool beatup'emup gameplay.
>having a functional but extremely shallow story/characters (
A light, story sure, but an existent one in comparison to the first four gens of Pokémon. Shit actually happened in game, fans aren't bullshiting with headcannon.
> more Mods than you could shake a stick at to tailor your preferred experience
>Mountains of multimedia material, etc.
You sound zoomish, dude.
>I was ten during gen1,
>twelve during gen 2
>skipped gen 3 all together
>nineteen on the cusp on gen 4
We didn't have that in the first gen it was a bare bones game that made us clamor for what was happening in the manga.

There are plenty others already mentioned here. These have stuck with me the most.
