So, I've been tooling around with RPG Maker (MV) I've built a pretty good resource set that lets me build an 8-bit Atari graphics game. (I've posted here a few times) working on this as a little side project and plan to release for free

The idea is a Bioware-like game, but told in atari graphics.

I've been experimenting and I've actually learned some pretty creative things you can do with little squares to humanize them and help immersion and suspension of disbelief

I don't want to bite off more then I can chew so thinking of keeping this simple, a little 10 hour game

Act 1- Introduce the party members, the villians, set up the story

Act 2- Chrono Trigger style, from the beginning of act 2 there is the option to go and fight the dragon if you think you're ready. It would be an open world (Hard to pull off in RPGM but I have ideas) while doing this you're also fulfilling social missions, developing world ect. 3 of the allies are women and I'm working on you being able to romance one of your choice.

Act 3- Take the airship to Death Mountain and get the most challenging gauntlet of battles in the game before the big dragon boss fight.

I'm still writing and story comes first for this, but a few questions I want to source some feed back on

Should this be lighthearted are dead serious?

What would you recommend for the play time? How long could I get people to put up with the gimmick without boring them. (Say 5 hours? Make it short and sweet?)

Lets assume I'm actually a good writer lol

If you want plot details feel free to ask, would love some input

But why? I never had an atari myself, nes is as old I get, and Im 34. And so it follows you'd have a better response somewhere where 40yo guys congregate. And that would be.. I have no idea. Forums, maybe.
Good luck tho, sounds like a lot of work

Pretty cool. Looking forward to trying your work.
Also, indeed, start simple especially if art is the problem. You can diffidently make decent and interesting games with just pixel art.

You've talked about doing a minimum possible effort game possible for months, and still nothing to show for it.

It's ever the same, is it not. Action is the only purpose of thought; thought without action is worthless, thought that can't be acted upon, useless.

well, the minimum possible effort is zero effort

Hey, Op here, I had a demo and floated it out but got no dowlands, I fucked up the source file and accidently made the game unplayable so I had to rebuild from beginning

I decided to buld another story, and while I learned a lot from building it, the narritave was too constrictive to be viable for the response I'm seeking, so I'm back to square one, I am working on this and will post demo here once I have it

I’m over 40 and this kind of thing triggers Gen-X and literal-Boomer nostalgia, not mine. Find out where all the 50-and-over crowd hangs out.
