Was this remake any good? I didn't hear a single person talk about this game after it released. I thought the graphics looked pretty good (minus those coal-tier portraits).

it apparently uses the exact same mechanics and dungeon layout of the original, with the original graphics overlayed in the corner
there's nothing to really complain about but it's not like playing heart gold/soul silver or anything like that

I didn't play it but I looked at a lot of reviews and apparently it's very good. I was actually going to get this on Switch and didn't take the plunge, this thread came up so I guess it's reminding me I need to do exactly that.
I'm going to buy it, never having played a Wizardry game before. It's faithful to the old title, it just has nice graphics now, so yes play it anons. I will be playing as well.

Just play the SNES/PS1 ports.
Hate the atmosphere in this its soulless as fuck.

I agree it's probably soulless because the original art was made with the spirit of the devs. Retouching anything is intrinsically soulless. That said the QoL MAY trump the lack of soul. It really depends what you go for more - comfort and quality of life or soul/spirit.

I meant the reception to HG/SS being considered a masterpiece and peak of the series, and better than the original games. I was saying the Wizardry remake isn't going to have a special place in fans' hearts.

Story of Llylgamyn, the Snes version of I, II and III is the best port of the first three wizardry as not only it features Jun Suemi's artwork but also Kentaro Haneda's soundtrack, which the psx version lacks.

I’ve never played a wizardry game before but I’ve played strange journey and some etrian odyssey.
It’s just an old school rpg. Grinding Murphy’s Ghost til you level up a good amount is simultaneously a requirement that trivializes the game. The final third of or so of the dungeon has nothing to offer and is a waste of time. Magic is stupidly good once you hit a certain level. There are enemies that can one shot you and rezzing is really expensive
I haven’t played it in a year so some of the details might not be totally accurate, but overall it’s cool if you want to know what it was like back in the day, but I can think of lots of games that do everything wizardry 1 does a lot better without being casualized. The game wastes a lot of your time needlessly, and from what I understand you used to have to type in the name of a spell to attack with magic in the original which, again, did nothing but take up your time for no good reason.
