This game is extremely underrated, if you like JRPG's that give you a lot of freedom like DQ3 you'll love this one

I liked it but the balancing is so fucked in this game
>world maps lets you access several areas at once
>try the area to the west
>strong enemies
>win a mere 3-4 fights
>turns out you were supposed to go to the east area first, go there now
>You're now overleveled to the point that enemies in that east area don't even deal a single point of damage

It's my favorite in the franchise (assuming you count it as a Metal Max game,) but I might would feel differently if it wasn't the first one I played.
As flawed as it was, I think I might have still enjoyed Xeno a bit more than 3. 3 really didn't do much for me for some reason.

Game is good but Metal Max 3 and 2r are the best games in the franchise by a large mile.

The Metal Saga spinoff for the DS is way worse. Also there is the unsettled question of which Xeno is worse? I rank them equivalent as they're both odious in their own, special ways.

Nah, Hagane no Kizetsu exists as well and boy that's a bad game.
My only issue with Metal Saga outside of typical problems that games of the time have is that it's kinda disappointing coming from Returns, it's not really the major step up it should have been, that and the classes being actual OG donutsteel characters rather than generics, through the years I came to realize that's the big red flag for Metal Max, when you have donutsteels there's a considerable chance the game has problems, only MM2R and MM4 (sort of) are exceptions to this.
The whole Sons of NOA storyline and continuity with the first MM is also kinda cringe in retrospect, imo it diminishes the significance and impact of the first game in the lore.

There are a lot of old Japanese games getting modern remasters and ports now, many of them being released globally for the first time. I think Cygames would be smart to do a MM collection to build a little awareness of the brand before their next entry

Just a reminder that there were also several MM clones of the Zoids franchise made for handhelds

NTA but I just seriously hate all PS1 and PS2 era games that break up a dungeon into tiny rooms divided by loading screen doors. Ever since I noticed how they irritate me (because they cause a lack of a sense of orientation or space) in some game I was playing I notice every game that does it. At the time it seemed like a relatively minor limitation caused by 3D enviornments + disc media but man I can't play them anymore. Prerendered background games feel much better, probably because they generally mask the disorientation with filmic camera angles and environments that have a lot more to them than early 3D could have.

That’s literally what it is, though. Constraint of the hardware at the time. Yes, it is annoying when that constraint is no longer relevant, but that is why it was that way.

Obviously on a concrete finding-my-way-around level it's not a big deal, since it basically reduces it to a graph paper maze. I mean on an aesthetic level where my brain is subconsciously trying to picture what the space is like and it's just a bunch of jigsaw rooms floating in a black void.

No, it doesn't, it's basically abandonned at this point. I bet if you come in and pretend you're doing your own translation and fake some convincing screenshots that will get them to finish it.
also AI translation doesn't even work well with this game due to how the text is embedded into a menu with other text and due to how small the font is. That's how I played it though.

Says the guy literally bitching about that. "Oh no, the screen isn't an unreadable mess of that doesn't differentiate between the interactable and the noninteractable space to avoid showing any black space"

anyone know the status of a MM2 translation if theres one? I tried playing 2R but the aesthetic change coming from MM1 really threw me off, I dont mind waiting for a tl or until I finally stop being a lazy retard and just learn japanese to play it.
