This was the last good JRPG to come out. The rise of 3D action games, alongside MMOs, non turn based combat and poor storytelling accelerated in the PS2 era and ruined the genre completely.

DQ8 did a great job at sticking with traditions and having turned based combat and random encounters that weren't boring and entirely brainded, in an era where it had been the norm for long. That and having exploration and a fairly open world to explore.

it was a great jrpg but it got incredibly mogged by being released around the same time as FFX in the west, which outside of a huge bias against it, was an outstanding jrpg in its own, on next gen hardware. it made an already dated game look even older than before. would not be as big an issue today, but 25 years ago, people really wanted to see cutting edge tech

I got 60% through Octopath 1 and just got bored, the combat was cool for the first few hours until you figure out all the enemy weaknesses and it becomes trivial "hit confirm" to win combat like in most rpgs

I never previously played the original nor the 3ds remake due to the game dubious reputation.
I only recently started playing because I realized how cute Maribel is.
I tried the Reimagined demo and hated the hand-holding and the giant objetive marks that tell you exactly where to go and who to talk to.
I then tried the psx original after hearing that the 3ds and Reimagined where very different and I found myself really enjoying it so far
I your game has cute spoiled ojousamas I will play it

The thing that pisses me of about octopath is that they put all this effort into the fancy graphics but the world design itself has no effort put into it.
The entire world and every dungeon is just a bunch of hallways with the occasional hidden path for a chest.
What happened to dungeons with puzzles or unique themes and layouts? Even nes rpgs had more effort put it into their level design.

While I think objetive markers are retarded and spoil all the fun in immersing yourself in a world, revealing how linear things really are, I wouldn't care about this if devs let me disable objetive markers.
99% of games lack this feature and it's like it would be hard for them. At least there are unoffical mods to fix this but not all games have them and it's only on pc.

>If you use "modern" objective markers for anything other than a guide for where not to go right away then you have a problem.
I did this when Cyberpunk came out and was fucking around in the world for awhile as soon as I had some freedom. Was wondering why I didn’t have a damn ammo counter, it’s because the HUD is linked to the eye you get in the first mission. Based retard devs

I played thru the majority of DQ7 on the PSX. I spent over 100 hours on it and didn't even reach the second disc. got stalled out by some cloud fucker and ended up getting my memory card wiped from some other game (TimeSplitters 2 iirc).
I didn't play it again or finish it until the 3DS remake. a worthwhile compromise. it guts the intro section but it doesn't at least put guide markers everywhere. the original has a superior atmosphere of melancholy.
with that said I do enjoy the game but it is absolutely not the last greatest RPG ever made, lol. plenty of good rpgs came out after the fact. but I'm glad you are enjoying it, anon. I personally always thought of maribel as a cunt. kek.
we had a couple decent titles here and there but the massive dropoff in quality was the PS360Wii era. but even that era was decent. everything after that has been compromised for the most part, aside from maybe 1% of all releases. and that's being generous.
