FFVI did have an extensive story though, but I agree I didn't care for how they decided that the beginning Midgar section had to become the template for many things they did after. The worst thing about this game is that it gave Motomu Toriyama validation to somehow get an entire career despite being the biggest fucking idiot in the industry while people who actually knew what they were doing like Ito and Matsuno were left out to dry.

is it? FF12 is quite fun despite being mostly brain off. It was a new take of the genre so it makes sense that its a bit bare bones. Xenoblade takes a very similar engine and does way more with it. Better questing, better side content, better exploration and significantly better combat. The ludonarrative way they allow you to complete quests before accepting quests is something that more games should utilize. Like FF14 gives u the same psychic lore but in that game you don't get get the ludo elements
