The real penalization was the fact pretty much everyone including quite a few Canadians called them shitheads and the ones that other teams got umpired on but would probably have been let go under the old system as accidental/not improving the curl. Kind of world a top-level of a sport was able to go this long but unsurprising a country that invests a good 30% of its national character in winter sports would be the straw to break it.

A lot of the metrics towards performance based events like gymnastics, snowboarding, or figure skating are based on the types of moves performed during the routine and the complexity.
The music is there just to enhance the performance, but what's actually being measured is objectives like the type of move and the number of rotations. The subjective score comes from how clean the moves in question are executed, whether the athlete faltered on the landing. The subjective scores, where the judges award 1-10, are effectively multipliers for the moves.

Using diving as an example, you can do a phenomenal swan dive with no splash and receive a 10/10.
But you'll still be outperformed by a sloppy triple flip.
