Any of them will do

You mean out of these two or are you also including the base Apple M5 (10-core CPU, 10-core GPU)? Either way, how come, isn't M5 Max GPU twice as fast as the M5 Pro GPU? Although it may throttle in the 14" MacBook.

Mac mini 4 is cheaper and offers more.

Anon I learned on something with 50x less computing power than any of these you'll be fine with anything. That being said more is more. If you want to spend the money spend it

How come? You mean even for rendering? Of course, rendering on a laptop is retarded, but I don't expect it to be a permanent thing, still kinda want it to be able to handle the rendering for now.

Given that I'm putting the chip into a 14.2" MacBook Pro, I'm worried about the M5 Max chip potentially making battery life much worse + thermal throttling

you're thinking about it too hard bro. Laptops sucks anyway. Just get something so you can actually start practicing the craft

But I might render on the laptop

It all depends on the scenesetup. My 10 years old laptop can render eevee scenes fine. You don't need to trace all the rays or whatever, eevee will do.

can't you just use something... decent?

None.
Apple sucks.
Get latest workstation thinkpad and install Qubes OS.
Max out RAM, make CPU choice mid-line or better.

Any new suggestions

You don't. Pick up the wrench and tighten screws instead.

Battery life only gets used up if you're using the chip, when it's idle it's not taking up any more. And the Macbook Pro has fans. And you should render (or any other performance sensitive task) while plugged in anyways, this goes for any laptop.

Of course, but it might use more energy for the daily tasks due to faster performance

I have a mac, it's ridiculous how shit it is. Then again, it only cost 2900€
