Texas thread died about a week ago or so... RIP, not OP of the previous Texas thread but the anon that had revived it briefly in October. Meant to revive it again this month in-time for it to reach 1-year-plus status, but had totally slipped my mind and was already too late by the time I had noticed... oh well, let's try this 1-year challenge all over again, shall we?
UPCOMING NOTABLE EVENTS (for the next six months):
Anime Frontier - Dec 12-14
Ecchi Expo - Dec 12-14
Ikkicon - Jan 9-11
Ushicon / Komoricon - Feb 6-8 (both in Austin, Komoricon happening on Feb 7 only)
AnimeVerse Houston - Feb 13-15
WeebCon - Apr 3-5
Anime Dallas - Apr 17-19
Otaku Odyssey - May 8-10
Riverwalk Anime - May 23-24
A-Kon - Press X to Doubt (World Cup will be in town during Jun-Jul)
Discuss topics about Texas cons here, including ones that have have happened recently such as Anime Impulse Dallas.

OP of the old thread here, once again thanks for taking care of our kid while I stepped out to buy smokes. I noticed that the old thread died but didn't feel like reviving it since /cgl/ is turning into a board for zoomers to farm engagement judging by all the new threads that don't use the existing generals. I was gonna ask why Dreamhack was left out, but I looked it up and turns out they can't get KBH center for the next few years due to rennovation so that's lame.
>Anime Impulse Dallas
Was that the one where the entire con is a dealer room? I remember speculating several years ago that cons might devolve into just dealer rooms where there's also a rave, I guess the future is now.

And KFC moved its corporate headquarters to Texas earlier this year, so we be doing some sharing with Kentucky. Whataburger is still headquartered in Texas last I checked.
>>10964944
No problem! I wanted to see the day a Texas thread would turn a year old and still be on the board, unfortunately, it didn't happen this year, we got so darn close tho.
>Dreamhack
I actually forgot about Dreamhack (never been but remembered when it was in Austin for a time), but it's interesting to see it leave for a similar reason Dream Con did when it left Austin to be in Houston. The Austin Convention Center is undergoing renovations as well.

Anime Impulse was super mid with dealer/artist alley focused, and the after party was a walk from the KBH. But I did see an veteran from A-Kon holding the Nina Tucker poster which was super nostalgic! If anything my favorite thing from the whole convention was the cosplayers that were there.

>A-Kon - Press X to Doubt
Can people fucking give up on A-Kon already? All they're doing is jerking each other off, living in their former glory days. The claims on their return are greatly exaggerated. No angel investor who wants to remember their glory days is going to give them a million dollars to return.
It's about to get a lot worse in DFW before it gets better when it comes to anime cons in the region.

Frontier gets better every year. 26 or 27 will likely be a pretty good year for them
They just have to stop using all the same staff as their NYC show. They just don't have the time for two shows that close together.
Other than that, DFW is in a weak position, sure. It's time for someone who actually wants to run a real con to start one. Too bad everyone with experience is getting out of the game

Opening up the rodeo arena and shoving the snack stands and tables in there was a good move. It'd be nice if they could get some food trucks in there or right outside, feels like just about every restaurant next to the convention center is a hotel restaurant.

OP here, last Ikkicon I met and shook hands with Asmongold and Emiru in quick succession and then went on my way. The Twitch Con incident from a few months back makes me think they might not show up this time. Unfortunate, but totally understandable if they decide to do that. If Asmongold does show up AND I FIND HIM, I'll give him a sticker of thread pic. His reaction when he pulled Taiki Shuttle on his uma vid was priceless kek

>Tsumicon
Never been so can't tell ya much about it
>Ecchi Expo
I attended the very first one back in 2021... and never again. Even if the recent ones were good, the company behind it, Fandom Events, is a sinking ship it looks like with a few of their cons being cancelled in this past year alone. They're also facing corruption allegations, mostly directed at the con owner. This one's one to watch to see if they're happening anymore, alongside their other events.
>>
>>
>>10966245
>corruption allegations, mostly directed at the con owner.
What does that even mean?
How does a privately owned business like this even DO corruption?
There's no public policy to influence, there's nothing to be corrupt about.
Are vendors paying under the table to keep other vendors out? Or guests doing that? That's all I can think of that could even approach it.
Fraud I get, tons of cons commit fraud.

Should I go to Ikkicon? I want to budget smarter but I have enough money for once. I have outfits but can't afford a really impressive cosplay.
The $75 for 5 sealed events looks so tempting

>how can small business be corrupt?
there's a thousand ways from promising high and delivering low, paying really low wages, refusing to pay smaller acts, taking cash for some things and hiding it in a box with no receipts or taxes on it.
Often enough the limit of small business corruption is just the arrogance the owner.
but should I show up to ikkicon if basically nobody I know will attend it? I know one person working there I miss that guy
>>
>>
Aaaaaannnnddd Fandom Events just canceled another one of their cons (Anime New Mexico), and surprise, they're not even issuing any refunds for those that bought tickets! Another clear sign that the company is in shambles and they're now crumbling under their hubris

None of that is corruption.
Unethical, sure, but corruption is specifically an outside force using illegal means to influence the behavior of a figure or organization (in this case a con)
>Attend ikki or no?
Eh, i mean, if you like waterparks and have the time and money sure
Or if you really like the 18 plus content.
I would say "otherwise just go to another con later" but holy shit so many died

Josh is proving that he's a giant bag of shit like he has been the entire time. What a massive fuck head he's been. He decided to rip off the wrong people. It's well-deserved for what happened to Fandom Events. He might have kicked off the idea that lewd cons make money, but then he runs it to the ground.

ive never been to a con before but I want to go to one this year. Which should I choose? (I live in Houston)
>>
>>10964928
Is anyone going to ushicon ?
I wanna go because it's near my apartment
But I've never been to a con before and I'm kinda scared
I'm not very social ,
is it something I can just walk around and look and buy things without getting a panic attack ?
>>

For Houston area, you have the option of going to AnimeVerse Houston next week, or waiting until Summer for Dream Con and Delta H Con. Don't bother with Matsuri, it's in decline.
Go to: AnimeVerse for Vendor Hall and guests focus, Dream Con for black otaku shenanigans, Delta H Con for a small con with chill vibes all around. Outside of Houston, I recommend Colossalcon Texas and San Japan.
>>10967823
>>10967824
I'll be there (not most of Saturday tho since I'm insane enough to also attend KomoriCon)! Ushicon is another con with chill vibes and imo, is even reminiscent of AnimeFest's (RIP) chill vibes in a way, even tho Ushicon is tiny. I recommend actually taking your time to look around and find things to see and do that you're interested in, and eventually you'll find those people interested in the same things you are interested in to talk to. Do note that this is a con geared toward older anime fans and otaku culture, so the newer anime stuff may be limited, however, fans of newer anime will always be present. Also, unless it's for autographs and for a few other activities, there's really nothing TO RUSH FOR here, just take the time to smell the Gundams n Roses kek
>can I just walk around and buy things without getting a panic attack?
Dealer's Room/Artist Alley can get a bit cramped at times, especially during autograph hours for certain guests, but most of the time should be fine to walk through, hopefully the layout is better this year.
>Do I have to buy tickets in advance or can just buy them at the door when I show up?
You can also buy your badge on-site, they have a machine that can print out one with your desired name on it. There are no day passes just so you are aware, just weekend badges. Remember to bring your ID as well in-case they wanna check if you're 18+.

Just found out that Weebcon went back to the Gaylord this year. I'm happy about it because I like that venue more than the ICC, but also kinda surprised this happened; didn't they stop holding the convention there because the Gaylord had some problem with them?
>>
>>10969488
It was a contract issue, not a venue issue. They couldn't hold the show there on Easter Weekend at the Gaylord in 2025, so they were forced to move to the ICC as a holdover. They knew this in advance, but they wanted to make it seem like it was the Gaylord or the shit that happened with WWPete was fucking them over.
I haven't heard whether they've extended it, as this is the last year of the originally signed contract.
I'm not going back to the Gaylord, as it was the biggest bullshit to try to park there.
>>
Weebcon has become the same trap that Anime Matsuri would pull every year. They would announce this amazing guest list, people would arrive, and then it would be horribly organized. People flood their socials that they are a terrible convention, rinse, repeat. After attending Weebcon for multiple years, I don't care if they announced that God was attending, as I would not go back. I expect to see many of the same issues, as they don't seem to learn at all.
People are dumb.

I know /cgl/ is dead, but I'm planning on San Japan this year, but would anyone like to start talking now and maybe plan something for it?
Haven't cosplayed since high school but wouldn't mind doing something as a group.
I can make a small server if anyone is interested and isn't already in a group.
I'm local as well if it helps.
>>
>>10969575
I plan on going! I'm still thinking about whether or not I'm going to cosplay, or what I would even do in that case. I'm still a beginner to it since I've only cosplayed once, and that was more of a closet cosplay than anything else.
Still, I'm open to the idea of attempting a /cgl/ meetup if there's anyone else interested at all!
>>
So I'm 31, would prefer more of a party atmosphere and would like to avoid underages, especially if they're the kinds to introduce themselves with their pronouns. Are there any BIG cons in the DFW area like that anymore? I went to Weebcon and it was alright but it was pretty mid-sized IMO. A-Kon is dead from mismanagement, Ecchi Expo is dead from mismanagement, Dreamhack is out of the state for a few years while the Kay-Bailey Hutchinson gets remodeled, those were kinda the ones I knew about, plus I'm still sort of fresh to to Texas (been here 3 years now).
>>10969496
There's a neighborhood behind the convention center with street parking. About an 8 minute walk to the front door.
>>10966161
Is there any kind of general community for conventions that's worth browsing anymore that's not full of well, "underages who introduce themselves with pronouns?"
>>
>>
>>10969729
>Are there any BIG cons in the DFW area like that anymore?
A-Kon fucked everyone. The only hotel that can support a BIG con is the Anatole. Anatole refuses to let any big party cons return there. Until the KBH finishes the renovations, the only thing left is Fan Expo.
>>
>>10969733
What about Anime Frontier/Anime Impulse? I know AF is in Fort Worth but that's still DFW. Also WeebCon didn't feel like it had much of a party atmosphere and it feels like a lot of cons I attend these days feel very "sanitized" like that, for various reasons (Woke/Tumblr staff, hotel security locks down the halls to stop parties, haven't seen anyone organize a real fighting game tournament in the game room in a while, etc).
No idea what happened to A-Kon, but I attended its very last year. Never heard about whatever incident caused it. What I'm really sad about is Ecchi Expo. It sounded kind of like what I'm looking for and I never got to attend.
>>
>>10969734
Frontier is an industry con. Impulse is in a dealer room with some VTuber shit.
A-Kon mismanaged their finances, signing bad contracts that cost them over a million dollars. Private financiers couldn't save them. They got blacklisted before that for fucking up too many hotels after Sheraton and Anatole kicked them out.
All other larger-sized anime cons are fucked from ever returning to them. Gaylord is the only one left, but who knows if Weebcon gets the boot, too.
>>
>>10969737
I don't really know the difference between the types of cons. I assume industry means that they lock down hard on parties?
I hope WeebCon doesn't lose the Gaylord since it's a very nice spot to begin with, and while I saw some willingness to party they just didn't have the attendance to make it reach critical mass, so it might be safe for now. But if all the other cons getting shut down means that people start going to it, and they have as lax security and disorganized staff as they did this year...

I'm local as well if people need other SA/SJ ideas
I know most people here are already in their own groups and such, but figured I'd at least put myself out there as a point of contact if anyone does want to do our own independent /cgl/ meet up.
I'll make a server if we get a few other people down.
