Just looking at 24 oz cans of alcopop I can recall the smell of my breath, the hangover, the hollow feeling after a night of getting hammered.
I do not miss living like that.
I never started the night with that disgusting, sugary shit; I was a vodka man. But come 6 a.m. when I was still boozing and out of booze, I'd head to the store for a couple, three of those fuckers. It would just make things worse in the end.
There's something about that next morning, you can smell the decay of your own muscle tissue as the alcohol slowly eats you away.

Taste is definitely a factor when I choose Steel Reserve or another similar North American beer.
I've tried all the high ABV IPAs and "malt"/"high gravity"/"strong"/"intense"/etc I could find. The IPAs or imported high ABV yuro beers can be absolutely vile (pic related) compared to Steel Reserve. Some are extremely bitter or just taste like metal, and you get a hangover where you wouldn't with same amount of alcohol consumed another way.

But Steel Reserve? Colt 45? Literally any domestic 8% "Malt" brew? It tastes pretty good. Not exactly crisp and clean but still quite nice and refreshing. There's no horrid bitterness or metal flavors, no repulsive sensations, no hangovers after 4-5 pints. So, for me, Steel Reserve is a solid, sensible choice.
