pros: improvement in most meals
cons: hard for me to tell which meals to leave it out of and I end up making them worse

It's not bad but it doesn't belong in everything like some people say.

It's just a gritty, bitter, burning powder. I don't understand why it is held up as such a platonic pairing with something like salt. It's incomprehensible to me.

for the price of a moderate amount of black pepper you could buy a slightly smaller amount of crushed red pepper which you will enjoy much more

Can't confirm off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure it's because some old king liked it so much he demanded it always be on his table and now it's just a thing.

It was actually part of a triple with mustard
People valued that bitter sharpness

Yeah I heard that too. Apparently it was King Louis XIV. Some sources say it was because he was a picky eater and just salt and pepper were what he liked, or that he had stomach issues and pepper was what he tolerated. But I read it was also common around that time for wealthy people to show off by overusing expensive spices to the point where food probably tasted bad.

In some places salt and cumin are the typical things on tables instead of salt and pepper.

That's a fairly small amount of crushed red pepper for an average-sized person, I'd say?

Only parasites and children don't like the taste, which are you?

It should be mixed about 1/3 by volume with ketchup with a dash of aromatic bitters. This dabbed on a toasted bagel with cheeze egg and some bacon with rawr onions. This is yummy.

I like pepper more now that I'm older. However I absolutely fucking hate white pepper. The smallest amount just ruins any recipe. I think it's a genetic thing like I think celery tastes like soap to some people?
