What the fuck are you talking about? This one here is over 50 years old and it doesn't connect at both ends.
Apparently the new ones aren't even as hard or durable if you want something to bitch about. But as far as I know you've always had options.

The new ones work fine if you aren't taking them out of the oven and dunking them into ice. People act as if we absolutely need the vintage borosilicate ones, but I think they're just a meme. And they still are being made, in Europe.

This. Mine's a hand-me-down over 25 years old and has the open handle. It's easy to grasp. The closed handle looks like it'd be less convenient.
