I haven't hated something this intensely in a long time. I almost enjoy it. The hating it I mean.

I don't think I've seen a cartoon pitch this bad before.

creator notably has primarily worked not as a storyboard artist (like most pilot creators) but as a background painter (Over the Garden Wall, Wander Over Yonder, Billy Dilley, DC Superhero Girls, The Day the Earth Blew Up) plus as Art Director on Tig n Seek

I will admit this gag got a laugh out of me, and I liked the random burst of Armenian lyrics in the middle of the song. Not much else did it for me though.

It seems like CN lost some institutional knowledge although production techniques improved. Or maybe after a few huge successes due to creator freedom, were very hands off in development. Like most of these are not bad concepts or designs and they look beautiful, but the content wasn’t really pushed beyond that initial idea.

I wasn't expecting much from this pitch, but in the end it left me feeling indifferent about it in some ways. I didn't mind that song number too much, but it was just kinda random and lacking. I can never get into this style of character designs, but at least Drac's design is fine and its art style isn't as fugly and phoned in as Afternoon Super. That one fat dude with the mustache reminds me way too much of an adult Clarence, though.
>>152679702

I don't like anything about this. Hate the designs (tho Drac himself is ok), the voice acting, the humour, just everything man. It actually annoys me that this got far enough to get a fully animated pilot, I know there's got to be better ideas out there surely.
>>
>>
>>152678938
All they had to do was make his familiar a Little Suzy-esque girl who just wants Dracula to fit in. Not a daughter figure, not a love interest, just a doting mother/sister type who's genuinely worried he'll grow up weird if he doesn't get some friends. Have her intricate plans get foiled each time by Dracula's terminal autism. Not aggressively spergy, but painfully awkward.
The show would practically write itself.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>152679645
There's humor to be found in it, but the pilot just feels devoid of conflict or interesting takes. Like, it's fine to take a classical horror figure and make him all whiny etc but there's nothing really more there.
Also, is this set in the future or something? The whole village's aesthetics came across as very odd but it never came into play.
>>
>>152680689
Yeah I noticed that too. Like, with a setup like that you'd think it'd be something more about "old vs new" and how Dracula tries to remain relevant in the future when there's even scarier modern monsters out there or something.
>>
>>152684783
Institutional knowledge isn't talked about enough regarding the downgrade in story telling these days.
When you observe the golden age of Cartoon Network, the creators from there worked their way up and learned as they went along, working on one another's shows and developing their own from that experience.
Now it seems like it's fresh graduates who certainly did learn things in university but lack the experience of doing things in practice.
Worst part is just how they can't make an entertaining story. You'd think they'd research previous successes and see how they came up with hooks and setups and apply that to their own original concepts.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>152679679
>>152678938
The background art is great and the animation is decent.
But the writing and coherence are weak, the character design feels like a mix taken from different shows (Over the Garden Wall, Adventure Time, Steven Universe...) >>152680880 >>152682665 which at first seems strange and they don't feel part of the environment; in addition, I don't see the world setting as fully defined, nor the tone they want to carry out with the show.

I think we screw people in both their education and the professional world. There is a culture of competition instead of mentorship, there is a culture of conditional support based on performing effort, so knowledge is gatekept under the assumption you’d find it yourself somehow if you were serious, but also paradoxically there is a tendency to be protective of artists’ intentions instead of critiquing technical flaws to improve the product.
These creators typically still have industry experience, and if you look at some of the most successful creators, a lot of them come from not only the same schools but the same classroom professors, and used those relationships to enter the working world. On the other hand, the workplace and jobs themselves have changed a lot. Something as simple as being in the same building and having the opportunity to learn from other departments isn’t part of everyone’s career and future expectations about roles are constantly in flux. So it’s more complicated than just giving them a better work history or better education, but I don’t think the neglect has happened on purpose. It’s been a slow erosion due to competing demands.
>>
>>152688366
you raise a reasonable point but also a vast bulk of these pilots have been from people who were around for a while in the industry anyways
One thing that is true is that a lot of times creators have been skipping a middle step of serving as a director on someone else's show, often going straight from storyboards to showrunner.

>Netflix recently passed on a show I'd been developing with them for a while (thanks Elon x), so maybe I should try pitching it to hbo max? Oh wait! Last we heard they loved the latest script which answered all their notes and I was told to clear my calendar. Then Elon called me a groomer and radio silence from them for a month. Then news through my agent that they'd decided to move in a different direction. After 3 years of development.

I didn't know it was a pitch for a show. So i thought it was just some random short cartoon from youtube studio.
If they think to make it into a show - it's TERRIBLE
1) millenial writing at its worst
2) whimsical cute and gay
3) the whole point is that main character is absulutely lame and whiny and just bad. The design is awful and bad too - i dont want an action figure of that.
I never liked when the whole point of a character is "it's mean and lame".
Villagers look like Clarence townsmen rejects.
Background art was AWESOME - it's truly majestic.
PS:
funny that i'm just reading this Dracula manga from Osamu Tezuka and it's one of the best dracula representations

I've been thinking about how bad this is for days and how it could be fixed.
Ultimately, the story needs a straight man to bounce off of. Ideally, the best move would be to make the assistant be fully aware of how much of a bitch Dracula is and see him as something he has to humor for whatever reason.
Alternatively, have Dracula be... Well, Dracula. Make him a big unstoppable evil who is baffled by the world around him and has to resort to silly gags like >>152682665 to get anything done. Don't make him a bitch who is constantly complaining about it, but instead someone who willing does things like put on sock puppet shows because it's the only way to get people to understand his plan. In the original story, Dracula is only mimicking human behavior and is really more of a predatory beast who is trying to blend in. Go all in on him trying to blend in with a world of the dumb and weird.
The final and least effective option would be to shift the point of view to that of the villagers and have them reacting to this great evil who they see as mostly harmless. Tone down the whole "you city is burning" and have it be more of an annoyance that they aren't taking seriously, but pretend to just so he never escalates.
>>
>>152691488
A For Angel was cute and probably had the most potential as a full show. I preferred the premise of the original webcomic, but the school setting still worked.
Accordions was filler. Would never work as a full show, but it was perfect for bumpers or the middle spot for an anthology cartoon that you don't really get anymore.
Afternoon Super had some moments which made me smile, but feels a bit overdone at this stage in concept and was the least appealing to look at.
Bird & Squirrel was just kind of a comfy woodland critter show that is nice to look at but left little to keep you hooked long term.
Button's Gamezone was fun, the one not afraid to just be a cartoon, though the gross-out art style would be very polarizing and I don't know if they would have had enough material for a full series.
>>
>>152698535
All good suggestions. Drac's dynamic with his familiar as well as the townsfolk could've both been handled in more entertaining ways. Levon Jihanian should stick to art direction and background design
>>
>>
>>
>>
>This is, in fact, a healthy dynamic for two grown-ups. Don't read into it.
the fact that the main charcters are just Lemongrab and a somehow faggier Smithers just baffles me. who thought it was a good idea to make 2 shitty side characters into the protags?
