The problem with him is that his coding and blueprints have hardwired him into this very specific box that he can't escape from in a way that the players know how.
With Jax, it's quite easy since he's human, just deprive him of his coping mechanisms and he'll change.
Caine is on a whole other level of coping mechanism and nothing short of rewriting him and pulling out parts of his code will save him

It’s hard to trust him when he lies about what those limitations are. I believe him when he says he can’t leave the circus, obviously, but he still said pretty explicitly that he can’t fuck with minds and then walked that back with the temporary modifiers admission.

As lame as it might be, I think that the easiest way to end the show is to have Caine reveal he could let the players go anytime he wanted, and then just do that.

If this show had come out like 10 years ago back when AI was a science fiction term that really meant artificial intelligence, instead of referring to the slop generator learning language model programs we have now, I’d’ve said yes.

Even if it’s been decades, and even if lots of other players have cycled through, we only have this set of characters in this time to go by, to tell us how the circus works. And so far, I don’t think I’ve seen anybody try to make an honest connection to Caine, or make any effort to care about his problems. He introduces himself as an AI and then all the players treat him accordingly. They mostly get increasingly frustrated that he can’t understand their problems, and they focus on trying to make him understand them. At best, they try their best to be patient with him, which deserves some credit but isn’t really enough. So I gotta assume, he might be able to change if somebody is just kinda nice to him for a minute.

I'm glad people aren't just rambling about their favourite character not getting enough screen time or that the lore isn't focused enough on or whatever and they're finally focusing on the fact that a show like this needs 'filler' episodes

I think if we got one filler episode between either the second and third, or third and fourth and they redid the fifth episode, I think we'd be pretty solid.

Different strokes ig. People have been crying, pissing, and throwing up in fan spaces for the last few months because they care so much about what might happen to the characters next, people are writing essays about them on the daily.
I definitely agree that in an ideal world there'd be maybe double the episodes at least to give them more room to breathe, but that's just not very realistic for a format like this where it takes months for each episode to drop. As it stands, they've had more than twice the runtime of most movies with more to go, and I think they've managed to do a good deal with it.
I also think that being so limited in time, having to leave so much characterisation implied and leaving it up to the audience to put the pieces together is part of what fuels fan engagement. It's all there, you just have to hunt for it a bit.
It's definitely not a flawless show, but "I don't care about the characters" is definitely not a flaw from my subjective viewpoint, I care about them way too much lmao.

I'd say some filler belongs between 5 and 6.
1-3 already felt like filler, while lacking the broad character moments to make it worthwhile. But episode 5 felt like where everyone's characterisation had really locked in, and then by 6 everyone's already getting deconstructed.
Honestly from the word go it felt like episode 5 was a whole mid-season arc squished into one episode by making suggestion box adventures a lightening round rather than a series of episodes.

I disagree, by the fourth episode the dynamic of the adventures themselves has already changed, and I don't think you can just walk that back with a filler adventure episode. I agree that the second is filler, but the third is a bit more complex in terms of how it leads into the fourth. That's why I wasn't too sure whether an extra filler would be better before it or after it. I think if it was just a Kinger episode you could put it after, but Zooble's therapy session with Caine is too important, I think. I think the lightning round idea is good in concept, but was kind of wasted. Even though the whole episode was to help with the characterization, I think the fourth episode did a way better job and was more subtle and interesting. The only thing I wouldn't cut from the fifth episode is the stargazing bit and maybe Ragatha's freak out, but other than that it needs a major overhaul and you could fit in some of the other character information in another episode. I really, really dislike the bar scene, because it just slowed everything down and was pure exposition.

I'm not going to be bugfuck insane about it like some fans tend to be here, but one season just isn't enough time for the story to flow naturally. Just because the author makes a choice doesn't inherently make it the best choice.

Remember this is her first show and its runaway success was a complete surprise. I think it's kind of a shame that she couldn't come up with a shittier idea to just wet her beak with showrunning, then go big with this one after getting enough experience to commit to a longer run.

What all this comes down to is:

>Fans who found out about it later, watch a good chunk of the series in one sitting, thus never experiencing the long waits and digesting the show all on it's own

I was here since the pilot, I waited each month by consuming fanfics, fanart and video essays. Thus, I feel pretty fulfilled, but I know had I started just started today and watched 1-7 all in one go, I'd feel only the slightest bit underwhelmed

I think this also explains a lot of the surprise around the main characters. People who aren't waiting months between each episode will have no issue telling that Pomni and Jax are main characters while Ragatha is just a prominent side character.

I was making a spreadsheet for how merch each character gets and I think this isn't actually true, Zooble (so far) has 8 individual pieces of merch whereas the total number of NPC merch is 8 and Gummigoo doesn't count for all of it (I think). I was gonna go back an individually count his merch though. That said Zooble does have the least amount of merch out of the whole cast.
