I guess the idea is she's using the supposed tragedy of the brother, who is actually herself as an excuse to go around taking revenge on those who enslave girls like she was enslaved? feels a bit needlessly convoluted and makes me wonder if it's a reference or idea I'm just not getting. Also IIRC we don't see her again, do we?

>>153185922It could also be just her making up a story so she doesn't have to tell Usagi that she was sold to a brothel or to some gamblers and so she's on a road for general vengeance now and no, we never saw her again, which is a shame but I guess Stan couldn't stand writing her sakura blossoms too often.

Considering Priest Ji and Ibaraki recognise Ibaraki's masters as "Dark Kami" and Jubei's village have no qualms about praying to them instead of the Buddha, its clear they must be head and shoulder above even the greatest demons, and Jei must be some sort of gestating god-in-waiting. He's probably telling the truth about how killing Usagi will allow him to ascend to the ranks of the kami, specifically the Dark Kami honoured by Ibaraki and shunned by the Buddhists.
And Jei's arbitrary labelling of everyone he meets as evil, probably indicates the Dark Kami really are lawgiving deities who judge mortals and are a part of nature and harmony. Not rapacious selfish demons who only seek dominance and destruction and defilement.
But Sanshobo successfully exorcising Jei goes against that. Maybe the Dark Kami are rulers over demons, and the demon spared Hama because he recognised Jei as a superior. I guess just like the Tengu, even the demons have castes in feudal Japan

This is one of only two times we see the Tokugawa clan mon in the series (so far), confirming this isn't some Shogun deal with alt-history personages but the same clan that rose to power in the series called Real Life History.
>>153186391
Anon pointed out one year how the last panel has a weird angle, it's titled to show Lord Awase dying "upright:" his last act was the successful fulfillment of his samurai duty.
Also worth mentioning that these kinds of shogunate appointed successions were the only way for one clan to take another clan's land/territory. I remember that being a question a few threads ago, how did the daimyo fight amongst themselves during the shogunate and the answer is they didn't, any inter-clan warfare is fictional.

Stray is actually a sort of interesting character in that sense.
We know for a fact he's genuinely a good person who does this terrible thing to support those less fortunate but we see the lengths he goes to (holding that one woman hostage) and we are now seeing the consequences of this profession first hand (good men dying who don't deserve it).
He's very much a product of his environment and we even see him lighten up in his interactions with Gen so it's not like he turns off his emotions but he lets himself he callous. Feudal Japan is an awful world. In a better time he'd be able to help those without having to take lives

Given Japan and Buddhism's view towards Demons and Monsters, it's entirely plausible we're not dealing with an Either/Or situation. Oni, Tengu, Kitsune and fucking Tanuki run the gamut of "trustworthy servant of the gods" "serial killer" with some goofy pranksters and churlish bullies between. And we've already seen Men turn into Monsters as early as issue one and that's got s lot of folkloric precedent too. It's very probable that Jei is a Monster working for a God who's has a vested interest in Killing. But it's filtered through Jizonobu's view of the world. So he doesn't kill everyone, sparing the innocent. So whatever's in the pilot seat is using a narrower and narrower of "innocence."
Eventually. Even kids like Keiko won't be safe.

Oh, it feels very bitter this year. On March 4th, Mike Richardson was fired and mo longer is the CEO of Dark Horse Comics.
Why was he fired? Embracer Group (yes, THAT Embracer Group) bought Dark Horse some time ago and wants to focus on "products and experiences, growth and multimedia synergy". Not once in their press release have they mentioned creator owned comics and/or great stories.
Richardson was replaced by a guy who worked for EA and Activision. EA. AND. ACTIVISION.
I predict 2-3 years tops till Stan and Usagi jump ship AGAIN.

>Watch closely, you're about to experience a Feudal Japan moment
>Preist Sanshobo defined the Feudal Japan moment as a moment when ignorance overwhelms the mind of an otherwise logical samurai. Causing them to act in an illogical. Self-destructive manner, I.E As if in Feudal Japan
>Feudal Japan moments are un-predictable. But they all end up bad
>If they had their own category. Fedual Japan moments would be the 3rd leading killer of samurai behind Shougn Peace and Jei.
>It's a fact.
>A big misconception about the Feudal Japan moment is that it can be avoided by simply moving away from samurai
>If only it were that easy. See, samurai always got a new trick right around the corner.

Because it's an easy way to demonstrate very quickly that you're dealing with some real lowlifes. Have them kick a puppy, have them threaten to rape a woman. It's the Press A To Jump of storytelling.
>>153187451
Others have said she's a skunk. I'm not 100% sure myself. There is a confirmed skunk character in an unpublished joke story we'll eventually get to. I think Sakura is supposed to be that generic bear or cat furry animal, personally, but with a distinctive hair feature like Inazuma.

Sakura is very clearly a cat. We've seen in the past character designs change from cover to page- the covers are done first, so my guess here is just Stan decided on the stripe only after making the covers. Sakura in general, especially with the context of the letters pages these issues where Stan makes it clear he's still deciding what her deal is (IE, wrote her in a rush) and that he only decided to kill Inazuma at the very last moment, leaving a possibility of her surviving at first by having another corpse there to burn, seems to me clearly just Stan regretting where Inazuma's story ended up and making a replacement, the same way Inazuma herself was a replacement for Tomoe. Similar design, similar backstory elements, etc.
>>153188677
You're getting to learn why Usagi is kinda the only one of the furry indie comics of its time to be remembered, because everyone else had this corny sense of humour and sensibility. Scott Shaw is one of the creators of Captain Carrot, and one of the people who started Archie Sonic, which is also early on constructed of basically just dumb shit like this.

I do want to get back into it but man, got to finish drawing a small GN, then draw my own comics, also do a cover for another book, etc. The dance card is pretty full. But thank you for thinking of me, anon.

Meh, if we're gonna have daimyo in this game then we should also include Mifune, Mataichi, Ikeda, maybe even Noriyuki, if he gets to be some weird combo character with Koro.

Fuck's sake, RIP Dark Horse.
If Stan does jump and do another set of character re-introductions, how would you like them done (ideally with a little more progress for the older readers)? This is what I've got, addressing the concerns of some anons. Long time readers, just tack onYukichiwherever applicable with Usagi.
>Usagi approaches a rest stop, sees a ragtag group of armed men loitering around
>another runs up and shouting they have her cornered
>Usagi stops to rest and have some tea, asks the owner what's happening
>he explains that they're bounty hunters after an easy target
>Usagi wonders why are so many working together if the target is easy
>owner goes back inside to get the bounty poster, mentions that she's evaded capture for weeks
>Usagi spits drink
>it's Kitsune
>spits drink again
>this is the largest bounty he's ever seen, could set even a group of hunters up for life
>Usagi pays the owner and runs off, owner bemusedly comments thinking he's like all the others
>arrives on the heels of the group as they surround the shack where Kitsune is
>they plan on burning her out, Usagi jumps in to stop them
>too many for just one ronin
>suddenly Gen bursts out and saves Usagi
>Usagi is pissed, he didn't think Gen was so heartless as to go after their friend
>Gen smacks him before he can finish his sentence, raises eyebrow towards shack
>Stray Dog comes out
>Usagi rephrases into why they didn't assist a friend
>Kiyokois following him
I think the basic points to hit for newbs would be Gen/Stray Dog being bounty hunters, Kitsune/Kiyoko thieves, Usagi meddling. For old time readers, this arc would also set upKitsune settling down with Gen. I also think it's time to crack the Stray Dog nut. Kitsune and Gen end up having to go one way, while Usagi, Stray Dog, and Kiyoko go to the orphanage and we get some more depth to his character.
>>
>>
>>153189241
I think for simplicity's sake I'd prefer he do it like he did at the start of either Mirage or Dark Horse, I don't remember, where he just plain had a montage going "here's what the deal is". I don't think we got time to waste doing a whole bunch of new reintroduction stories.

>>153187945
As Anon said, he specifically did NOT want the shogun to have the sword and that's why he brought it to Atsuta Shrine instead of giving it to Noriyuki, who is a loyalist and would have forked it over immediately. And which... actually would probably have strengthened his prestige with the bakufu immensely and allowed him to thwart Hikiji more or less permanently, so this wasn't necessarily Usagi's biggest-brained moment.
>>
>>153188656
The story could be that Usagi and Gen are both tracking down a bandit, who has accrued a massive bounty, and stumble onto a plot where someone is raising a massive army of roninIt's Noriko, who wants to kill Tomoe and Noriyuki and set herself up as opposing warlord with the aid of some kinda supernatural bullshit

Either it's a highlight, or it's just an artifact of the covers being drawn months in advance of the completed story. He may have had only thumbnails or partial pencil roughs at the point when he drew those, and later decided she needed a more striking look, while inking the first part for example.

I don't know if there's more historical context than just "tattoos were something only low-life people, the sort who'd be thugs gambling, had; and they'd want hot women doing the dice handling because hot" and "it's probably not that accurate historically and just became a retroactive stereotype in later fiction, just like ninjas wearing black pyjamas"

There are presumably more, but that doesn't mean the whole 300 killed themselves. I wouldn't be suprised if half that are up in the castle going about their business saying to themselves "nah, fuck that. one lord's as good as another"
Bushido overemphasized loyalty so hard because it wasn't nearly as common as the noble class wanted it to be.

You're kidding with that, right? For the Neko Ninja that would be the best advertisement for her case. The whole reason they went over to her Jonin's side is that he convinced them that she's not a hardass motherfucker but weak little baby. "I killed 50% of you motherfuckers, don't make me do it again" is a solid way to answer that accusation.

>this wasn't necessarily Usagi's biggest-brained moment.
No, but it was principled, and that's consistent with Usagi's character. Katsuichi-sensei says something similar about him regarding Nakamura Koji, how he was glad even though it could have been a literal lifesaver, that Usagi didn't compromise his principles, even for his old sensei. It is interesting, looking back on that story, how Ikeda has to fight to keep that Bushido Moment down when he has Grasscutter in his grasp, while Usagi's conflict isn't in grasping or seizing power for himself, to correct some past slight or gain some present advantage, but in how to use power so it doesn't cause unnecessary suffering, or even if power should be held at all.
Alright, we're at 496 posts and it's 9:15PM/17:15 on the East Coast of Feudal America. Do you Usagi FREAKS want a talk back thread or should we just keep going until this slides off the catalog?

Stan's posting stuff about Kaito issue 2, which is coming out in 10 days
>The crew is reunited; the target is in sight. A high-stakes heist promises a new beginning, but when the job goes sideways, a relentless chase erupts across Osaka. Now, with the cops closing in and an even more dangerous foe on their tail, Kaitō must outwit his enemies—and confront a chilling vision from his past that could unravel everything he's fighting for.

No, Stan's basically using ninja-movie shuriken, which operate on rule-of-cool.
IRL shuriken were used like caltrops to slow and distract pursuers, and about as dangerous as poking them with a pen-knife.
Sure, it hurts like hell, and it will make you stop to pull it out, but it's not gonna cause you to drop dead on the spot.

I never commented on it before, but this would be a story for the history books forever, wouldn't it? As large a number of 300 men committing seppuku at once would be a tale of the Bullshitdo spirit of samurai well into the modern day of Usagi's world.

It kind of amazes me how this game managed to make the simple swordfighting mechanics it uses represent the iconic samurai duel, where you and an enemy charge at each other, swords held high, and the damage is down to whoever has the faster reflexes and times the strike better.
