Yes thanks to the work of Monanon. Go back to Jei's very first appearence and compare the mons of the samurai accosting him for killing their lord. Apart from being a neat bit of continuity it also confirms that Goyo probably was just talking from stress when he threatened the temple as he claimed later, as his samurai proclaim he was a fair lord that inspired great loyalty.

Ibaraki is an interesting case, because that's the name of a region of Japan arond Osaka AND the name of a Heian Japanese demon child Ibaraki-Doji, who has a backstory somewhat similar to Jei's, where said monster is a man transformed.
It's worth noting, he was part of a Gang of Demons that Yorimitsu and company slaughtered after getting them sloshed, and he was the sole survivor among said demons.

I did some research into this. Buddhism and Shinto, as we all know, were highly syncretic with each other. They meshed together so well that after the Meiji Restoration, the new government had to issue a decree formally separating what was Buddhist and what was Shinto in an effort to re-Japanify if you will the Shintoism from "foreign" Buddhist elements. It's not that there was never conflict between Buddhism and Shinto, but Buddhism came out ahead so quickly and so pervasively that it was a one-sided contest and Buddhism would enjoy unprecedented supremacy ahead of Shinto right up until the aforementioned decree during the Meiji period when shinto became State Shinto with a capital S.
Surprisingly, do you know what religion actually came into conflict with Buddhism in Japan? Neo-Confucianism, of all things. For a time, the Confucians were even regarded with the same suspicion as Christian converts by the Tokugawa bakufu. There was a tug of war going on all through the 1600s between the Buddhist clergy and the hardline Confucianists of the Tokugawa bureaucracy. Buddhist temples were closed and their lands seized by the government when Confucianists had more power in court, and likewise Confucian schools were closed and their lands seized when the Buddhists had more influence. The matter was only settled when Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the 'dog shogun,' ascended to the position in 1680 and the Buddhists won out, but with major concessions to the Confucian scholars in so far as Neo-Confucianism was now going to be the official political theory of the bakufu.

I'm not bothered by Stan giving her via Word Of God the number one fighter spot in the cast, somewhat counterintuitively, because of scenes like this. This kind of energy that Stan puts in the comic really helps to put any power rankings into perspective. Like Katsuichi said in his duel with Nakamura Koji, on another day it could have been him that died, or both of them. All that training any of these sword saints go through and it's just one bad day or a single slip up and your career is done for no matter what your rank is or how many honors and titles you have. Of course if you don't put in the sweat and hours at all you're instantly cannon fodder to begin with, so it's not like the training is useless either, it's just very, very ephemeral and hard to translate from talking points to absolutes in practice.

Well, we don't know how far those samurai have pursued Jei, but, let's say for simplicity that somebody recognized him and they're either in or just outside of Goyo's old domain.
Not long after his initial encounter with Jei, Usagi entered the Geishu province so they would met in a neighboring one. He had previous been up norrh so it's presumably to the east of Geishu.
So the likely suspects are Izumo, Bingo, Hoki, and Bitchu.
Of those, I think Izumo or Hoki is more likely to be where Jizonobu's temple is located. Why? Because the Gate to Yomi was located in Izumo while the resting place of Izanami is near the border between those two.
Ibaraki's cave is likely the literal entrance to the Underworld.

Thanks OP. I'm a bit mixed on this. On one hand I liked Jei's backstory and the character interactions were on point. On the other, Inazuma is such a waste of a cool character it's actively infuriating. It wasn't enough to effectively kill her off after only a handful of appearances, her carcass had to be dragged across the mud Weekend at Bernies style for countless chapters, giving you the faint hope that she might be able to make it out of all this. It almost feels spiteful.
Ah well. At least she had a more dignified death than most in this comic.

That's not a schizo theory, it's fairly well supported by the textual evidence. Priest Ji (Jei 1) willingly made a dark pact to save Lord Goyo's daughter, Priest Hama (Jei 3) had been slowly mindbroken by Jei mentally for years to be a willing host. Inazuma's case was a lot different and the mystical sword Grasscutter was involved.

Dororo is a weird Manga, I love it, is full of suffering and dead children like Usagi but is always weird that the MC is suppose to be a guy with no real eyes, mouth, ears, legs, hands, etc, but in practice that doesn't affect the story at all. The anime tries to fix this detail by making him a weirdo who acts like you would think a mute, blind person would act but in doing so basically is a different protagonist.

Maybe stating the obvious, but I think the demon didn't spare Hama because he invoked the Buddha but because the demon recognized Jei's presence in him and didn't want that smoke. Between terrifying a demon and surviving Grasscutter it seems Jei is being set up as something greater than just a regular evil spirit that got on the loose.

It's basically a short-cut. A skilled swordsman should be taking close care of his blade, but showing him cleaning it is boring in a movie so they invented a bullshit way to show it being done unreasonably quickly.

Sorry if this is an ignorant question: how did Tomoe get her swords? Her family is pretty screwed up, and it doesn't seem likely she got her dad's when he died, since her brother would have. Is she likely to have received them as a gift for her achievements from the panda, or would there be some ceremony or forms to fill out to be allowed to receive some general set of them?

That's right. It caught on with noir detective stories, like in Black Mask and similar magazines. It's very convenient narratively if you can sap the detective and have him wake up 15-20 minutes later. In practice though, if you whack someone with a blackjack hard enough for a knockout there's like a 40% chance of just killing him outright. But again, in stories it's too useful to pass up.

Most likely she got them as a gift from the Geishus when she was named protector of Noriyuki, yes. She doesn't have any when she's working as a guard ("so at least, I carried a spear" and then she takes a ninjato off one of the killed neko), as she quite obviously wouldn't have. It's possible that she got a set of her family's swords once she was made Noriyuki's protector, though; any well-off samurai family would own several sets, and a sword instructor like her father certainly would. We've also seen that he wasn't really averse to her handling a sword, so once that became a positive, it's entirely possible that he gave her a set of Falling Rain School heirloom swords.

It is, but the conventions of pulp fiction basically require being able to knock people out for long periods to generate drama. Real life you're up again, if groggy, very quickly and hitting someone hard enough that they end up knocked out for longer than that is a solid shot at just killing them
There's a reason why boxing is a ten count and that's to get all the way back on your feet with gloves up, not just show signs of life.

I hold off reading it yet but god I love watercolored comics, it's such a great medium. I especially like the more "realistic" (as opposed to like, using messy blobs of paint just to give color) watercolor paintings, like how Juanjo Guarnido does it. Kaito seems to be going in the same direction.
