That makes for a broader, shallower appeal, sure. Forgoing the food analogies, it's more like knowing or not knowing the history or context behind the subject and artist when they made the piece. I'd argue that this is more often than not the cases with art in general.
In the end yeah it can be easier to digest if there's a standalone scenario that a person can understand with no prior knowledge whatsoever of the character, artist, etc, but it's definitely not required. And it's okay to have implications and leave things up the viewer's imagination and that's sometimes more powerful than outright explaining it word by word like you're holding the viewer's hand.
