/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - Artisan's hand edition
What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bick4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them
How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush
>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

Chink mocassin boots have arrived. Decently comfortable out of the box and surprisingly lightweight for how heavy they look. They came with cork-foam-leather topped insole that I might swap with something else. Maybe some thin leather or foam replacement, because it feels like they takes up too much space in the boot.

Hello bootfags. I don’t know shit about boots so can one of you tell me if I can get my boots resoled and if so where? Link related. These aren’t mine but it’s the same boots. They’re the best boots I’ve ever worn but the sole is garbage. I really want to get a new sole and keep using them.

Then tell Filson or you local cobbler that when you contact them about having your boots resoled. Its just a piece of rubber nailed and glues to some leather, its not rocket science, they can figure shit out.

The US snowstorm gave all our snow a hard ice covering which was apparently sharp enough to tear up my boots when stomping through it. It's not a great picture but those are all little cuts, not scuffs, actual cuts with little leather scabs still hanging on to it. What should I do to care for these?

Glued and probably shit leather, but if you need that very specific look it's probably your only option. If you just want a chunky, black chelsea I'd recommend Grenson.

>>
>>
>>18645142
Glued construction can just fail easier, especially when temperature and moisture is involved. You can be lucky and have no issues for years or get fucked quickly, it's just a gamble. Nothing to do with whether they can be resoled or not for that.

clearly made by the same miyagi kogyo factory in sendai that makes lofgrens and white labels for most jap heritage brands
the "historic Japanese tannery" that makes the leather is very obviously shinki, since they are the only ones that produce horsehide in japan, other tanneries only finish it and the grain figuring pretty much gives it away immediately
quite a bit cheaper than regular shinki lofgrens but kind of looks like an awkward blocky lofgren-viberg hybrid
good deal, but the design is very uninspired and the smooth nobrand soles probably suck

most of these outfits are just one level above thrown together, which i guess is the point of the video to show that black works more than people realize

I've used lacing to finish the fit of a boot/shoe. Same last, different styles, different materials. Ostrich, Shell, CXL.
The under-eyelet cross helps apply pressure at the point where it's needed for the fit of the shoe. The shell pair have molded a bit since the picture was taken, so I now keep my lacing above the eyelets.

thursdays are plagued by major QC issues and their "premium" line isn't any different
the challenger has wafer thin heel counters and the heel is way too high for the last, so the boot is ramped forward
some dude managed to rip through 3 rows of stitching to destroy the pull loop and backstay the 2nd day he got them
that's quality right there

It's hard to tell in every picture, but that one looks like a lighter shade of brown with yellow/green undertones. Maduro is pretty dark brown, almost black, with more orange undertones.
>>
>>
>>18650334
i think you're falling for the old color inconsistency issues with horween
it's literally the same thing
people would swear color 2 and garnet were totally different and they could totally tell them apart, until it's been confirmed by horween that they're functionally identical and they just renamed some of the shell colors when updating the dyes after changing suppliers
>garnet is way more red and color 2 is more honey colored
same with bourbon and whisky
all the "true browns" have green in them to kill the natural tan shade of cordovan
>>
Anyone have experience with replacing eyelets with speedhooks? Going back to all eyelets is such a ball ache, but some makers refuse to use hooks for some reason. It's not like you even see the very top eyelets anyway, so who gives a shit if they're less elegant?

that's the thing, you don't "need" anything more than a pair of good red wings, unless you're doing something like firefighting, logging or need a steel/composite toe
if you just need a good pair of boots for working in the garage and riding a motorcycle or whatever, then iron rangers are all you'll ever need

Fyi, the rubber melts and binds onto the sanding machine and its surroundings, making a bunch of sticky dust. You can see videos where cobblers ball up the rubber dust into a ball, such as Tring Shoe Repair’s videos. If it doesn’t come off from a leather midsole or fiber midsole, it’ll be rejected unless they have a hot rubber cutting tool.

I don't understand the appeal, or why it's in demand, but I just found 3 new bootmakers. The most expensive from Japan (Addict Boots), the cheapest is from Mexico (Cordobes), while this is from China.

Thank you anon, I found an old Kiwi's polish cream tube in my father's box, I tried it and it worked so well that my shoes look a bit "alive" persay, that tube has now finished after its use so I think I'm going to order for my boots a Saphir paris' polish cream.

I'm looking for boots that are casual but a step up from sneaker level. I really liked the look of the Redwing beckman, but they're expensive as fuck (was considering getting seconds). Any suggestions for a something else that can fit the same role?

Yo. I am looking for a pair of ankle boots that will serve me well for 3-season travel. This means:
>flights, buses, driving
>walking all day on pavement
>light hiking: trails, forest floor, gravel
>won't look out of place in the city, but also won't crap out on me if I need to climb over a rock
Other criteria:
>can be had in Europe
>not bulky
>can take some beating
>price: up to about €400
I had some very old Swedish army boots (same as pic rel) which more or less fit the score well but were a little more bulky than I'd like and had a pretty dumpy last shape, so I sold them.
Options I have considered:
>RW Blacksmith/Beckman - seem nice, but cost almost $500 and $600 respectively in this shithole
>Moma Tronchetto Male - I like the sole (blake with commando topys), but the heel counter is suspiciously straight
>Atheist Serious Boots - Seems all right if a bit more bulky than needed. More winter-appropriate than necessary.
Any thoughts fellas? Something like a euro version of a RW blacksmith would do well.

Beckman was right on lower edge of the level of smartness I was looking for, so the blacksmiths are right under. I think a pair of chelsea's would also work for what I want but I don't know too much about boots to begin with. I just know I want something that isn't dogshit quality.

28.5cm so anywhere from 43-45 depending on the manufacturer, but why?
>>18653349
I guess that's not too bad, thanks.

If size 10 UK fits you then I’d recommend these.

Not Swedish but thanks anyway. As for Trickers in general, not a fan of the last, plus they look extremely generic to me...
Looking more for the heritage thing like classic work boots and/or stuff that starts to dabble towards the rustic aesthetic meme like pic rel

$320. Tax and shipping included.
Maryam TPR with Dr. Soles.
The problem with these are:
>it's snug
That includes EE sizes
>cheap eyelets and speedhooks
They easily bend and become loose
>pajeets don't listen
I told them to use black eyelets and speedhooks, and a mahogany dye on the edge.
So if you're going to buy from them, do it on black Friday or Christmas sales. They give 15% to 20% off
If you want to see more photos from other blkbrd buyers, go to Patina project

French army rangers boots. Get them surplus for 40-60 or even less and cut them above the eyelets. You'll end up with a 7" tall boot that's indestructible. One of the very few things the french did right. Make sure the brand is argueyrolles or marbot neuvic.

Does that contrasting stitching on the vamp serve any purpose other than to ruin the aesthetic of the boot?

Contrasting colors is plebbit tier to look quirky.

i'm at the point in my life where i am seriously considering moving to spokane and working at whites or nicks, or moving to new england and working at alden or rancourt or something
i deeply regret not becoming a shoemaker when i was young. i was so pressured into going to college and getting the "real" job that now i have one of those soul sucking email and excel cubicle jobs and i hate it

the niagara boots are so close to being the perfect indy clone but they just miss the mark, just barely. there's something off about them, something overbuilt.
the fudging on the welt looks out of place and the SPI is too high giving it a dressy look when it clearly wants to be a "work" boot. so many of these new boot brands make this mistake: trying to be too many things at once
and that big wacky 360 degree split/storm welt just doesn't look right. it's too much welt. and the faux moc stitching on the niagara being more rounded just gives the boot too much of a soft look
ultimately the niagara boot tries to be both an indy style work boot AND a dressy style boot but as a result it fails to properly be either
though i do acknowledge that it's the best indy alternative, if parkhurst even still makes it

Those look like he used a butter knife and children's scissors to use the pieces out
I've seen people make homemade boots that looked way better than that
Again, not hating since he did make his own boots which is cool in itself

Damn I love Ken's videos. Been a follower of him for a long time.
I've watched so many shoemakers on youtube and I really think he's the best of all of them
My dream is to go to Japan and get a bespoke pair from him. His RTW shoes go for $2500, I can only imagine how much bespoke costs

they don't look bad, blake stitching is the cheapest option (stitchdown or a good year welt are better) but picrel sounds alarms because this is thursday tier bullshit and bait for people who have no idea of things, that said I don't have personal experience with the brand

>>
>>18654181
Aren't those closer to cap toe service boots? And I don't really think 450€ for made in uk goodyear welted boots is terribly overpriced. I don't think they are terribly ugly either, looks pretty balanced. I just need a versatile, sleek boot that can be used in business casual and casual settings. I already have different boots for "real" work and hiking
>>

>>
>>
>>18654178
Had those and sold them since they were to large for me. Built like tanks, not that sleek at all due to the G-last. In no way even similar to a balmoral boot, like the retard below wrote.
Only gripe, beside the to large-ness, is that the commando sole is a grabble magnet and will fuck up floors and everything else without giving any extra traction. Vibram is better for that.
They are made in England too, they have another similar boot made in India which is 100 euro less iirc.
>>
>>
>>
>>18654178
I have a pair. The leather feels cheap and is the biggest disappointment, apparently even their 1880 uppers are sewn in India and then welted in England.
The last is fine for me. It's roomy, but I'm not slipping around.
They could be cheaper for what you get. I'd recommend buying Crockett and Jones or similar instead. The higher quality is worth it.

>>18654369
Alternatively Yanko from Skolyx. They're about €300. Goodyear welted made in Spain.

one alternative i've been eyeing are these sanders florence boots, same price point as loake and made in england. My only concern is they have a F-last and ship from UK, so shipping will be more expensive and returning will be more difficult than with my closest loake-retailer
